  • Well, the freeze arrived early in the morning. Now it's up to me to save my fruit trees...

Water freezing to ice creates what's referred to as "latent heat of fusion" a type of energy exchange that can in effect help to insulate the tree and it's blossoms from freeze damage. The "endothermic" reaction traps the warmth inside the plant helping to shield the it from potential frost and/or freeze damage from a cold snap. If the ice that is formed is left to become cloudy because there is not a consistent water source saturating the plant the reaction can become "exothermic" causing the plant to lose heat and damage to occur.

The morning ice pictures were so pretty! After all that, you deserve a nice hot cup of cocoa and a long nap! Hope everything turned out ok! 👍

We hit 20 deg at 6:30 this morning here in the desert of Yucca Valley. My makeshift green houses with 6mil plastic were not enough. Tonight they have heaters in them and I’ll be up all night too, just to keep an eye on everything. Good luck guys this week with all your gardens. PS prayer is always good too. = )

We are in northern Idaho and we ran the sprinklers last night, I didn't know if they made it it looks like snow and ice and the trees are bent over almost touching the ground.

They do this in my area for the Florida strawberries. Seems like you are doing a great job and its working out. I'll research this further in the future and possibly do it myself.

    Great job!
All I heard last couple nights around my place are orchard fans, and helicoptors hovering over the nearby fruit orchards.

Interesting video. I'll keep it in mind for future reference. My avocado and a couple of citrus aren't in the ground yet, so I just brought them inside. I'm building a 8' x 8' x 2' raised bed for my avocados... plan on planting four avos in it and planting three citrus around it to help with windbreak. I decided I was going to modularize some emt conduit so that I could used the redwood planks on the raised bed to anchor the supports and put on Agribon frost blanket. I noticed that the spot I'm planning to plant them in had been free of frosts most mornings. It is a sheltered corner with a southern exposure that I had also sheet mulched deeply with horse manure. I'm building a chicken coop to the north of the spot, and will probably put a horse manure pile next to it on the south more exposed side to help keep the temps up. I might have gotten even colder than you last night because San Martin tends to get a couple of degrees colder because we have more open fields down here than your house in the 'burbs. My stone fruit seem to be not as far along in bloom as yours, but they are real young so it's just as well that they don't fruit much this year so I slept through the night!!!! Of course my kale, broccoli and perreniel onions are doing just fine.

We deal with a lot of late frosts up here in the north. My favorite method is to throw a tarp over the tops of the trees and run a small heater underneath.

Good luck. I'm in Portland and I'm hoping for the best for my lettuce and peas. I think the lettuce bit it. C'est la vie

Hi , I planted several cherry tree’s last year & 2 of them probably froze it buds they have no leaves, I’m hoping they are not dead & come back next year ?

  • @ΝικολέταΗλιάδου-υ5τ

I think that warm water only helps if it is like around 32 F (30-32), so it wont be able to freeze so fast...

Thanks soo much... Best cold freeze video. I wish John coller and Jake mace would do videos about the way they also protect their cold trees as it is happening. Top shelf my friend!! I hope your trees do well and survive. I lost about half of our fruit trees here in Apopka Florida, we got. It down to 26 degrees couple weeks ago in January 2018

Hi Dan! I know that this video is old but kudos to you and your wife. I grew up in south fla and the sprinkler method is what orange groves use to protect their crop during freezing weather. Congratulations and yes you lost some sleep but the wisdom you gained through experience will last forever. Cheers!

I'm in the Central Valley, I have one of those lights, I left mine on last nite. My neighbors are used to it, but ya I'm the crazy garden lady. My main concern is my passion fruit. Gophers got to my other one. I put tarp on alot of stuff. Wouldn't a couple of contained bonfires help? It's supposed to be colder tonite. Hope your trees make it.

All that ice is scary looking but it is actually an insulator. Great job man.

I'm scared for those blossoms. I've learned not to water anything before a freeze. I'm zone9 manteca ca. We survived last night without any help but tonight is calling a "hard freeze". Time to get out some blankets. Fingers crossed for your plant kingdom (and water technique). ❤️
