Thank you sir. Bought new house in spring on a creek and youre greenhouse and ponds are very inspiring. I have a 8 ft galvanized stock tank that I plan on using in my basement for my turtles Until next year when I can put a pond in outside.
Greg Jones nice tank, when I dug the hole for my pond it nearly killed me! Props! Are you going ornamental for the fish or are you going for a more 'complete' system? If you're going ornamental some awesome live bearers would be my suggestion, like trout goodeids.
I would LOVE to have a pond like that I would enjoy the ? out of it you said your in the north east I was wondering where at I live in Indiana. how much was that tank B T W?
Very very cool project. That looks like a ton of work but well worth it. You have so many stocking options but something that I'm going to try outside this winter is Odessa Barbs. I got 8 juveniles from Greg Sage earlier this year and they have produced a lot of fry for me inside so I plan on putting some of them in my 110gal outdoor stock tank this winter. Unfortunately mine isn't in the ground so I'll have to get a couple 500w heaters but I think it will work just fine here in Virginia. Thank you for sharing and as always do what you do if it works for you.
I need to do something like this, but this thing costs $1,100, plus $486 shipping. I have no idea if they will add taxes to that, too. I really wish I could get one so that my daughter could get aquatic therapy at home.
What an AWESOME project Greg. That tank is over the top. With a year round outside tank like that I would probably go with something that would be found in your local area. It should withstand the temps and work well for your aquaponics too.
I seen a 10’x4’ online. I want a 12’x4’ but having a hard time finding one that size even know I have seen people post that they found one up North at Tractor Supply but cannot find one here in Dallas or online. I hand it to you for hand digging that hole. No way I could have we have black gumbo deep.
The perfect place to house a school of bala sharks!! (aside from temp among other things) This is going to be so much fun to watch as it grows. Nice job... from someone who knows exactly how hard all that digging is. Oh, didn't see your comment about suggestions... um... how cold will it get? Any heating at all - say to keep it above 50 F or something like that? I think the Gymnogeophagus from Southern Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay would be interesting. I wonder if there are any interesting hillstream loaches that can go below 60? And there is a ton of natives...
You did a great job just by yourself. Is there a reason why you went even with the ground. Don't know if you get a lot of rain where you at I'm just thinking of the water overflowing. Thanks for sharing the build.
Our house is located at the top of a hill crest, all water drains away from this location in every direction, when i finish the surrounding ground i will grade the slope away from the tank, I want the tank as deep in the ground as possible to allow fish to survive the winter, and allow the aquaponics tubs to gravity feed back into the big tank
Awesome “pond/tub” digging here would be difficult due to rock. And laws here require some kind of stepping if in ground more then 24 inches so that would take away from the water volume.
Yeah, just legally here any water reservoir in ground deeper than 24in has to have “steps” Incase a child or animal falls in. I have used rock work before then put potted aquatic plants here or there on the rock “steps”
I know you got great plans for this and actually it’s making me want to try it too. It would be worth dealing with the rock and machinery of some sort to not have to mow that area lol keep up the great work
" 4 loads in an F150".... could've hauled it in 2 loads in a Chevy LOL. You are lucky with your ground, after 6" down for me I have solid clay and flat rock. Took me forever to just dig out for my preformed ponds.
Technically every tank this size is made to order, check under: Plastic Tanks > Open Top Tanks > PE Cylinder > #501000 Dura-cast 1,000 gallon (select the color when you order, tell them I sent you)
Yes, now that the tank is in, i'm leveling the ground around it to be on grade and slope away slightly -- no turtles unless they are wild and decide to stay on their own, it won't support them year-round - i didn't find any relics, but i did find a 60 year old fire pit filled with trash and broken bottles, that was fun to clean up =D
@@gregjonesonline Sweet! Yeah the glacial deposits cool. River bed? Beach? What's your fossil record there?! So what you gonna put in it? Greenhouse awesome got a Northern lights GH. You could do a passive heat exchange greenhouse to pool. Zig zag black tubeing in the greenhouse when water in the turning heats up gets hot with pond water passing through it have a thermostat turn on a very small pump to flow that heated water to the pool, recirculate. Like a heat sink.... warming the pond extending your season. Been thinking on doing it myself.
I have been in the process of landscaping my side yard for one of these. my 350 gallon is no longer big enough for the turtles anymore. I plan on doing a video series on setting it up and my custom filter system I use soon. I had no idea they sell them at home blow? although the one I'm looking at is over 9 feet.. What is the name of the company that makes it?
Only the truck came from Home Depot, the tank came from National Tank Outlet. Stock Tanks go up to 600 gallons, if you want to go bigger, I got the 1,000 gallon Dura-Cast Blue Cylindrical Open Top Tank sold by National Tank Outlet
@@gregjonesonline I was thinking of the bottom drain filter type, but how do I do the interior intake to keep debris out, without clogging? I had MAJOR issues with that the last time I had an above ground style pond and it was less than half the size. I tried using a foam cover, a mesh screen, you name it. come fall... clog central. I tried putting inclosed covers over the top... but they didn't hold up to our windstorms or winter... and ultimately came down into the pond.. disaster. SO... how do I set it up and NOT have burned out pumps from clogs?
If it were me I would have put something under the bottom of the tub. There is going to be over 3500 Kg of water weight and a real risk of a rock puncturing the bottom.
Btw----- you shouldn't be standing on sand 4feet down!!! 2&1/2 feet of good top soil on top of old river bed/beach???? At 4 feet down??? WTHell's? Um might want to soil sample that bottom grey layer to confirm if it's ash.... Based on you topography and what was growing (very well) prior to excavation, you may be sitting on a pocket of ash, above a beach, covered by a fallowed Forrest . Then again it just may be 4 feet of clean fill...😆

That is awesome Greg! I am so jelly. Look forward to followup vids including maintenance tools you end up using. 👍
Where did you get the tank? I couldn't find anything deeper than a little over 2 feet! I have been using mine as a pool for over 10 years.
He tells you at about 14:10
@@Zimbesian I've looked there and they don't have an 8 ft wide X 4 ft deep open top water tank in the inventory. Must be custom made.

Dude I just bought the 300 gallon stock tank and now I feel like I should have gone the extra mile and get the 1000 gallon tank lol
I’ll
Very nice. That would also make a lovely duck pond
Omg I'm so in love with that giant tank!!!
I did the same thing with 300gal stock tank. My turtle 🐢 loves it. I put a bottom drain and a skimmer so far so good 😊.
That was cool. You need a pick up G. Surprised you didn’t run into any giant rocks.
I got lucky!
Are you buying it M?
They are all great man
Very Cool!! Looking forward to next video
Wow just wow !!
Looking forward to seeing it filled up!
Stock it with cold tolerant humans...you can feed them beer to stay warm....I'm thinking of my fellow "Massholes" Mike and Greg 😝
Its 100 degrees out there, if only I could get a truck full of ice delivered i'd jump in!
Holy crap that is cool!
The biggest kiddie pool I've ever seen!

non-heated, winter temps drop to 0 degrees F, water temps will drop to near freezing, so it needs to be a fish as hardy as koi
If that were dug at my place Id be dealing with at least 3 feet of clay mix soil. Super heavy stuff to dig.

I just used a tank volume calculator and this tank is capable of roughly 1500 gallons. You did say 8ft Diameter and 4ft tall right?
My turtles would love this
Awesome “pond/tub” digging here would be difficult due to rock. And laws here require some kind of stepping if in ground more then 24 inches so that would take away from the water volume.

Cool mosquito hatchery how nice.hot tube would of been better served.
Nice swimming pool
Where did you buy it??
National Tank Outlet he said it’s super easy and they have em as big as u need they make it
Just a thought but do you need to make room around the sides for when the ground contracts in the wintertime when it gets colder?
i'm going to insulate the sides around the surface, the pond and the ground around it should stay slightly above freezing, we'll find out this winter!

the WEIGHT of 4 trucks, try lifting 4 trucks! (or 2 Chevys =P ) -- I was scared that I would hit a massive boulder, but lucky me, ground was perfect!
Do you drain the tank for the winter?
I’ve been searching everywhere for one of these. Where to buy it at?
Was this tank custom ordered? I could not find it on National Tank Outlet.

Gottaa watch them all theeeem episodes 😎 da di da da dam di
What sizeis this ? it dont look like 1000 gallons maybe it's taller, but it's still i'm not wide enough
You should check that gravel/stone for gold. :-)
is that big enough for a betta?
Yes but only one
I have 4 to 6 inches of topsoil in my yard, then its all clay all day.
YOu Moved like 3 dump trucks of dirt with a shovel. That's impressive. How long did it take?
3 days of digging on and off
Love it!
How about a bottom drain, for filtering?
I have an idea for that, stay tuned!
