    I own a PDH 2003 Mk1, a 2004 Mk2, the best two guitar amps Peter ever made. The Mk1 has more "character" than the Mk3, this is by design. The $4K Mk3 was targeting the "metal heads" placing a $60 OD pedal in front of the preamp, that really don't care for small babies or finding killer tone IN YOUR F'N FINGERS -- FACT. From Plexi to Super Kraken tones the Mk1&2 in stereo with a tasty BOSS SDE3000, and I'm playing on the highest mountain with colorful birds flying out of my PAFs, I might add -- HUGE BABY!!!

    New one mk3 is more for 7str and if you use one - there is no drop in low end try something with 70-74 gauge and you will feel it-it was refined for low tunings and it helps a lot- love your channel🍀

    MkIII has a rounder sound, like the presence has been dialed down. MkI sounds a bit more open. But they both kick ass. And the improved MIDI handling from the MkIII could be useful with an upgrade from mastermind Peter Diezel. Great video, man. Appreciate it.

    The mk1 low end is blaoted and unusabke in a lot of settings. The 3 has more than enough low end without being ridiculous and its much easier to keep tight doesnt even need help from a boost or eq pedal. Try a decent front loaded cab like and engl pro and they tighten up even more

    Honestly, at this point, Diezel should just make a 4 channel Herbert where channel 2's +/- are separate channels... sincerely, a mk1 Herbert owner.

    • @youngmike8645

      Do you happen to use 7 or 8 strings though your Herbert? If so how tight? I understand boosts have a china cabnet full and I own a triple rec so I understand by on its own how tight?

    • @ApotheosiZ
      @ApotheosiZ 10 місяців тому +2

      @youngmike8645 man, there's so many factors involved with getting a tight sound or any sound - guitar wood, guitar pickups (active or passive), amp settings, guitar cab size and materials, speakers, pedals, tubes, condition of the equipment, strings, playing styles... etc.
      With that being said, I wouldn't say the Herbert is the tightest amp I've ever played (that would probably be some sort of solid state amp or plugin & modeler)
      BUT, the Herbert is the most percussive amp I've ever played or heard live, the only thing to create more "thud" or room shaking low-end would be an ampeg stack or some massive bass drums.
      It really depends on what you're using (guitar + pedals + cabs) and how you play. My Les Paul with throbak pickups slay thru The Herbert. I've played 7 strings thru it, and I preferred a Schecter 7 string vs a Strandberg 7 or Fast headless 7 string, mainly because of the percussive sound the Schecter had but that was because it had a bigger body & more wood than the other 2.
      Honestly, it all comes down to preference.

      @@ApotheosiZthanks for taking the time to respond. These things are unicorns around my area. Only ever played through 1 Diezel amp and it was the 50w Einstein or was it a Dmoll? I can’t remember. Being the tool fan I am I long for a VH4 but I love my 7&8 string guitars and I’m led to believe the Herbert may be the better fit. I have a triple rec. I always thought the Herbert to be a better more versital Rectifier type amp especially given it’s a preamp distortion and the huge power section 180w right? Percussive is desirable I have enough boosts and overdrives that making it tighter won’t be to hard. Fortunately 33 locks up any and all loose bottom end. Meshuggah in a box.

      Mk3 could sound close to mk1 if U maxed it out in its smoothest and most bloated setting then it could match the best tone the mk1 could handle sure ...but the mk1 couldn't match the tighter low end and more present and aggressive mids no matter what U do. My ears are pretty whack making a lot of amps sound pretty similar and I can still hear a huge improvement in the mk3 over the mk1. The dmoll I had was just as close to the mark 3 as the mk1 was and I would prefer the dmoll to all other versions bar the mk3. Don't know what U guys are all doing 😅

    i think you might be hearing mostly pot taper differences in this review. but, i only have a mk1.5 herbert. but i defintiely experienced the thing with the earlier herbert front end and boost pedals. that might be the major improvement. also the midcut on mine is a hard no. it strips both the tone and the feel.

  • @chug5362
    @chug5362 2 роки тому +1

    I think the comparison would've been more similar if you've engaged the gain boost on the Mark III. Or put the Mark III's gain around 2:00 and leave the Mark I at 12:00. The Mark III sounded like it had less gain the entire time which just made it sound worse in some areas.

    I had similar experience when I have switched from MK I to MK II, but it was slight and mostly in lead, maybe it was simply tube difference, AFAIR according to Diezel in theory there is no difference on the dirty channel, maybe transformers were changed, I dont remember.
    MKI was more compressed/full, but on lead that was too much, I almost never used lead, while on MKII it was just right, but it wasnt tiny, just less compression and a bit more edge (closer to 2b)
