It's actually what you call a cemetery for poor people, or a paupers field. Because poor people couldn't afford to be buried in the graveyard (which is a cemetery connected to a church or holy building).
There's a popular "theory" that Over the Garden Wall is a modern child-friendly retelling of Dante's Inferno. Greg and Wirt were in the brink of death and each episode they had to travel the layers of the "Unknown"/hell/purgatory to get back to their normal lives. Everyone they met in the Unknown is already dead. And the two of them kinda helped them cross over to "heaven". Beatrice and her family, the woodsman, etc. There are lots of great videos here on youtube about their parallels and I highly recommend them. Even if you ascribe to the "theory" or not, it just gives this wonderful show another layer.
I think a lot Wirts insecurities stem from his parents divorce and his mom marrying again and getting a half brother. That’s why he lashed out at greg.
You might enjoy Gravity Falls. It's a closed story with just two seasons, and it's got a similar dark, quirky vibe that is entertaining for kids and adults.
I just noticed how much Beatrice pushes them being “mindless, lost, aimless, and obedient” when she meets them. That REALLY foreshadows Adelaide trying to turn them into child-servants.
When you said that Wirt was annoying, you were into something. The creators wanted to make the two brothers annoying in their own way, Greg not being serious and Wirt being too serious or melodramatic. Doesn’t make either of them less annoying, it just makes them well-written.
I applaud the writers for that honestly. It's been a few days since I've first watched the series and Wirt's melodrama and Greg's lack of seriousness annoy the hell out of me despite me being both of them. It's like watching a mirror splitting parts of yourselves. There's something that you can see that you see in yourself.
Subverting your expectations is my favorite thing this show does. You THINK the pumpkin folks are evil, but turns out they’re actually just skeletons. You are lead to believe that Beatrice is a good person who’s helping the kids, but she had bad/selfish intentions from the start. To me, the message of the show is that things aren’t always as they seem. Wether something is presented as a good thing OR a bad thing, you can’t assume that it is what you first assumed of it.
Well yeah you kinda hit it on the head, Wirt is a massive ball of anxiety. Certainly for all the reasons you mentioned, but something I took away from it was how Wirt has a massive "Control Freak" complex...and I understand why. He feels as if most of the elements in his life are out of his control...a new little brother he didn't ask for, his mother in a relationship with a new man he doesn't know or care about, his place in the social-strata of his school drastically undefined and his relationships unexplored and very unfulfilled, especially with the one girl he actually takes an active interest in. This is not to say that he has OCD (I mean, his room looks like mine did when I was 16) but his constant self-deprecation at being either insufficient or unworthy of his peers manifests in extreme social anxiety. As you said, his peers are...well, NICE. Or at least verbally and interactively neutral. No one openly criticizes or dismisses him. If anything they predominantly seem welcoming and inclusive of Wirt in activities appropriate for their age group and the holiday. We should all be so lucky to have attended what appears to be a relatively non-antagonistic high school. Wirt's 'competition', if he can even be called that, is someone equally as awkward as he is, though perhaps with a few personal-space issues. Jason DOES however represent something else that Wirt can't control. To me, this is why Wirt adapts so hesitantly and slowly to the fantastical world that he and Greg are introduced to. Greg, innocent and adaptive and optimistic and curious and trusting and friendly and EVERYTHING ELSE MOODY, MISUNDERSTOOD TEENAGERS AVOID BEING in school, finds their situation fascinating and adventurous. Wirt is single minded and wants out, fast, if only to get back to the OTHER life that provides him very few ready-built venues for control. But Greg's unflinching sacrifice has an interesting secondary outcome. Quite literally, all the control of the situation is now split between Wirt and the Beast. Effectively, Greg is rooted to the ground and has put Wirt in a situation where he more or less says 'OK, I'm not gonna let this thing take you...so I'll let it take me. Next move is yours, step-bro, you're in control of what happens...so what are you going to do about it?' And Wirt takes a page from Greg. Instead of whining about not being in control or the lunacy of the situation, he more or less rolls with it...he adapts, just like Greg. Kinda also speaks to why Wirt dismissed the idea of putting Greg's soul in the lantern, too...why on Earth would he cede control of something important to him to a creature he JUST MET, especially one that has attempted to separate, undermine and detain his brother and himself from the get-go? Kinda fascinating that Funderberker and Sara cause Wirt so much unreasonable stress, but make a deal with the Beast? "That's dumb. I'm not gonna just wander around in the woods for the rest of my life." And...he doesn't. Either in the woods or his own life. He's done whining and wandering. Great review BTW, glad you enjoyed this series as much as I did. :)
@@SophiaPhannn that's very kind of you to say, I'll consider it. BTW I don't know where you live, but as a kid I went on a vacation to northern Indiana, to a place called the Spring House Inn, not too far from Indiana Dunes National Park. It's a quaint little hotel set into the woods, nothing particularly remarkable about it except whirlpools in the rooms and a grand fireplace in the common hall...but the woods themselves are something else. When I saw Over the Garden Wall for the first time, I thought they lifted inspiration directly from that forest preserve; dense tree-line, deep valleys, long rutted paths, rivers and creeks running everywhere, occasional fresh water springs, large deciduous variety with wildflowers and vines and creeping ivy, farms and little hidden villages/glens every few miles, no light or sound pollution, lots of unmolested wildlife/unusual flora. You can walk for twenty hours and technically not see more than half of the territory, which means you can easily get lost as well. Walk far enough and you'll eventually hit Lake Michigan. The first time I visited with my cousins was in the fall, two weeks before Halloween, the same year the Blair Witch came out...which we watched just before exploring the forest. Not the smartest idea, but I think it heightened the experience and our awareness of our surroundings. Having re-watched the film and Over the Garden Wall, I've gone back twice now, before Covid went ballistic. I highly recommend it...lots of blue birds, pumpkin patches and unexplained night-lights, too. ;-)
Your analysis is EXCELLENT, and you're absolutely right that people saying Wirt has OCD are wrong, though not for the reason you state. I just wanna put in my 2 cents on Wirts mental state, if you dont mind :) As a sufferer, the idea that OCD sufferers are clean freak, symmetry obsessed control nutcases is a COMPLETE myth perpetuated by media using ableist stereotypes about Neurodivergent people. Cleanliness and symmetry can be compulsions but its very rare that theyre the ONLY compulsions a person has and theyre rarely the way media portrays them. I have cleanliness compulsions but its not about order and labelled storage and crap its about perceived imaginary contaminants from outside; my room can be messy as heck but if you sat on my bed without having a shower and clean clothes first I'd have a panic attack for 6 hours while i meticulously cleaned all my bedding, then myself, then dried and put back on my bedding once i was clean enough to touch the now- washed bedding to put it in the dryer. Wirt having a messy bedroom isnt the proof he doesnt have OCD, but rather his responses to his anxiety bouts. They seem to pass without him doing any mental or physical repetitive actions to alleviate his anxiety. And he doesnt have any clear obsessions. Beyond that, he's careless with Gregs safety, which isnt typically behavoir we see from OCD. The majority of us care a LOT about the people around us, its how the OCD can force us to do things. For example, my 100+ step shower routine is to make myself fully clean from "contaminants". But when i get to the end, sometimes my brain says "Now if we dont repeat the whole thing again this time scrubbing so hard is hurts our boyfriend will die horrifically and slowly *insert awful mental images of something disturbing* and it will be all our fault because we didnt protect him by showering again". So i have to repeat the whole 40 minutes again. This type of thing happens all day, using everyone in my life and also my own health and safety to get me to do these things. I have to make sure everyone is safe and being safe. Wirt being so careless with Greg isnt characteristic of most cases of OCD. I think he is, if anything, either Social Anxiety Disorder (like you said, but even then i dont think its that either, he doesn't shy away from the boat, or the school, so not ALL social situations seem to set him off), or just typical teen hormones mixed with a ton of new life events and feelings causing him to be overly anxious trying to fit in. Beyond that, i ADORE your analysis, i just thought the mental health point was intriguing and wanted to expand on it!
Fun Fact: At the end with the final confrontation with the Beast, the song that's being sung is actually Greg's "Potatoes and Molasses" from episode 3 but sung in Latin.
There were 4 wonderful guys working in "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack", all of them quitted (and the show had to end :( ) to create their own shows: 1. Adventure Time 2. Regular Show 3. Gravity Falls 4. Over the Garden Wall :D
I love wire's character arc so much especially the little details like he's so salty in episodes 7-9, but then when he wakes up in the hospital the first thing he does is ask for greg. and also that "I was never any good to him alive either" UGH SO GOOD :')
Fun fact: Auntie Whispers is voiced by the *legendary* Tim Curry. Edit: the title “Babes In The Wood” is a reference to an old (and admittedly *dark)* folk tale by the same name about 2 toddlers being abandoned in the woods by a wicked relative who wanted to inherit their fortune after their parents died of sickness. The babes unfortunately die in each others arms, but the relative is cursed by God & eventually pays for his crime.
34:48 I'm not sure if you caught this post-editing, but Greg did not lose hope. The Beast specifically mentions that there are two ways to become an edelewood tree. One is to lose hope, the other is to perish in His forest. That's why the Beast gave him those riddles. You don't defeat the Devil by playing His game. The only victory afforded to you is not playing the game in the first place. If you try to solve His puzzles, then you will either lose hope due to their difficulty or die in the cold. That's how devilish the Beast truly is. To give one false hope when the game was rigged from the start. That's why the Beast is one of my all time favorite villains. No need for violence(woodsman). He can bring ruin and damnation through lies and wit. A great reimagining of the Devil.
If you liked that you should watch Infinity Train that's a great cartoon show with similar animation and a good moral. Now there's three season 10 episodes each, every season is a separated story.
Obviously the main theory is that they're in purgatory or some other close comparison for the entirety of the show, and at the end we see them pull out of... whatever it was. But there's also another theory that they actually didn't survive. They died, and the ending is a big lie. An example of this is when the frog has the bell in his stomach at the end. If everything was happening in their head or some other plane entirely, he wouldn't have the bell even if what they went through was real. Another example is the narrator at the end. He says, "And so the story is complete and everyone is satisfied with the ending." It's... a tad dismissive to say the least. It's also very cut and dry for something that didn't need to be said, like they're telling you how you should feel, or they're trying to rush out the ending so you don't think any harder about it. It also brings a much darker meaning to the lyrics in the main theme, "If dreams can't come true, then why not pretend?" and "The loveliest lies of all". The theme itself seems to be backing up the idea of covering up a dark truth with an nicer idea. There's also more stuff like the both of them being brought to the Unknown to resolve their unfinished business, hence why after Greg tells Wirt about the rock and they give a name to the frog, he lets out a death sigh and closes his eyes. He never talks again or opens his eyes in the Unknown. Because that's it, he's passed on. He did what he wanted to do. And Wirt passes on after he saves Greg and comes to peace with himself. There's more to it than that, but that's the gist. I thought it was interesting.
This is what I believe, don't want to believe it but its the one theory that holds water. The show itself points to this ending and the writers originally wanted it that way.
originally wirt had a longer speech when confronting the beast, where he talks about how what's really scary is going home and facing you problems, tying back into in lullaby in frog land Beatrice praises write and he considers staying in the unknown, and of course him pretty much giving up in babes in the wood
Yes!! Loved the format of the cuts after the initial watch. This series definitely demands rewatches. It's a fun tradition of mine to rewatch this every autumn around halloween.
the jokes in this video are SO funny! also I didn't notice this until like my 3rd or 4th watch but every time you see the moon, its in that first quarter phase even though several nights seem to pass the moon never changes phases. This is because time isn't actually passing! On Halloween you see the 1st quarter moon, then all while they're in the unknown, the moon stays the same. It's SO SUBTLE BUT SO OBVIOUS
I love this show so much. It’s a great kind of intro to gothic literature, although it takes inspiration from many historical periods. I think there should be more old-fashioned animated stories out there.
Oh, I was obsessed with this show when it came out. I always thought that Wirt and Greg ended up in this sort of in-between where souls neither ended up in heaven or hell. In fact, one of my earlier theories was that a higher power sent them there so they can learn and grow as people, especially Wirt. I would say that them helping the souls was tests for them where both sides get a win-win situation. The souls find some form of peace or "heaven" and the boys gain more perspective and wisdom. Episode 9 really put things into perspective about how angry and messed up Wirt is. He was so ugly towards Greg and it was obvious that it was pent up. I would say that the Woodsman was the final test since Wirt stood up to the beast, but I think Beatrice was the last test. Wirt learned to forgive.
I LOVE this show, and after watching it 4-5 times already in the past, I still cried during certain scenes during your video. There is so much to gain from rewatching and discussing this show, because of all the fine details ingrained within. It's one of those rare gems that want to tell a story, and fully commit to it.
I think the reason Greg almost became a lost soul is because of Wirt. Just like how Wirt had so many insecurities he couldn't see how much his friends actually liked him, he also couldn't see how much Greg looked up to him and needed him. Greg had an indispensable ammount of hope in himself and finding joy in the little things, so in that regard he was immune to the beast- but he was losing hope in Wirt. Greg knew the only way to help Wirt find hope was to sacrifice himself to the beast, but Greg was never sure if his brother would actually come for him or not. Thankfully, his brother came through, and both of their hopes were restored. :)
My boyfriend and I have watched OTGW every fall since it has come out :) It gives me all the crispy, spooky, fall feels and I love the soundtrack soooo much!
@@alexaltamirano9784 they mean that while it is a series, it's an anthology so each season is it's own story in the same world with different characters. So it's easy to binge a season (which is about the same length as Over the Garden Wall) and not necessarily feel as obligated to hurry and get to the next.
It's implied that since Beatrice and her family are in The Unknown (purgatory) that they will meet Wirt and Greg again someday :) Edit: Also I totally shipped them too XD haha
I was surprised you didn't comment on it when the line was said, and maybe it's because I'm in the field of education, but when Wirt said "What, children? I'm like in highschool!" at first I laughed but then I was like wait... there's no highschool education in whatever time period this is based on!... But then again maybe it's a cheeky fourth-wall break?... That was the one clue that made me think that whatever this world is/was wasn't probably "reality"
I always took The Unknown as kind of the afterlife, the beast being death, and Wirt and Greg "lost" as they on the verge of death (and the beast trying to get them give in and lose the hope if going back home). I just love how this show portrayed it- from the first episode there is no explanations of what this world or situation is, Even Wirt and Greg go with it like all this scenery is normal (kinda like you do in a dream), and only know they are lost. Every character there have a different "time/era" look also, showing you from what time they are from. Everything was reveled so slowly but surely and I think it's a really genius and nice mini-series. It's defiantly a show you should watch twice after you know the big twist
a detail I adore that a friend somehow spotted at the first watchthrough is that in the scene at 31:17 the grave next to the one wirt is hiding behind says 'Quincy Endicott', the rich guy in the mansion. Maybe it's been pointed out here before but I do really like that little hint
the other hints about the pumpkin people in pottsfield are more obscure, a "potters field" is a term used for an area where you bury people in unmarked graves, essentially all the unidentified bodies end up in pottsfield as part of a collective community
theres a few other characters that the main characters meet along the course of the show that have names on the gravestones in the graveyard in the finale, and the bar they go to with a bunch of people just called "the cobbler" and "the highway man" are in reference to people that were only identified by their professions
thank you for putting in the extra effort for this show! It really paid off and i really enjoyed hearing your thoughts from boh the first and second time around
The Beast's test for Greg is unwinnable, and that's why he offers it. As the Woodsman says, lose yourself in body OR spirit and the Beast will claim you... the test is a test of spirit, but the correct answer causes you to lose yourself in body. Because to solve the sun-in-the-cup thing, you basically have to wait and freeze. So the Beast wins either way, and indeed Greg thinks he's won since he's not lost his spirit, but he does lose his physical health so... he's a new tree either way.
idk if this has been said in the comments but during the first episode when greg was playing around the house he was actually practicing to knock out the old man
It wasn't a dream, they were in a sort of purgatory. They nearly died, so it was like a glimpse of the afterlife. So those angels you saw were exactly that, angels~
This is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, it's so American with like imagery and folklore. And it's so rewatchable, you watch it the first time not noticing things and then you watch it again and you realize how many clues there were, huge clues. Like the tavern keeper straight up said The soul of the beast resides in the lantern revealing the twist to that storyline.
There are theories that over the garden wall's forest is similar to Dante's inferno. An interstice of purgatory dimenstion-time travels, fantasy and dream like landscapes. It can be real but also fantasy Wirt and greg's hometown is aberdale from clarence Wirt is son of shermie pines (gravity falls) and Greg is universe (steven universe) Endticott is realted to their mother amking them real relatives. A black train is infinity train in different form Sara is connie's mom(SU)
Thank you so much for reacting to this, is one of my favourite shows!!! Also, I really appreciate that you took the time to make other comments after the editing 💛 Is a very well written show, and it bothers me that here in México some scenes were censored. And it makes even more mad that here Cartoon Network turn the series into a "movie". They put like the first five minutes of the episode 1, then the opening, and then they skipped the rest of that episode (where you get the first hints about the Beast). They also cut out "Mad Love", where you learn about Beatrice being a human... So a lot of dialogue and details were lost, and it's a total shame that someone decide to edit the series like that.
Fun fact:The people in the cloud city thingy is the same as the costume Greg talks to in the party and the game two ol cat is also mention when greg is entering the party
The woman talking about how it’s a bad omen for a Bluejay to enter a home is foreshadowing! It’s an old wives tale to say that if a bird flies into your house- especially a Bluejay, it means someone is going to die.
Speaking of old cartoons, often when the characters get a good womp on the head they see blue birds... alot of the characters are like old Disney characters
YEES, following the hype of the other comments, I also think you should give Infinity Train a try. I'm done these days, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, I highly recommend it. And it would be great to see your reaction to the three seasons (3 books). :) Also, kisses from Brazil. Your videos are helping me to improve my English. 💞
great video! i loved your perspective on the lore of the show at the end. never really looked at it that way so that was cool. also if you liked this I highly suggest watching Infinity Train. It's an anthology sci-fi show with three seasons, ten 11-minute episodes and a very similar vibe to OTGW.
I think you should react to The Dragon Prince, it’s a Netflix original show. It has three seasons and 36 episodes in total. One of the characters voice actor is actually Jack De Sena, who voiced Sokka. You don’t have to watch it on camera, because it isn’t exactly a short show, but you should probably watch it because four more season are going to be released, so you might as well get caught up with it.
I did like that about Wirts perspective vs the truth. "I wasn't invited to that party" but they are all like "oh hey Wirt" when he shows up. No one seems mad like "what are you doing here" maybe they didn't invite him because they already figured he'd say no, maybe that has happened before.
The Woodsman later warns that the Beast doesn't just prey on those who lose hope: he also preys upon those who fall ill. So the scariest part is, you can hold all the hope in your heart, but you're still vulnerable if you're coming down with something.
37:40 Its also the sense that in the 1800s times it was a common thing for children to be a lot more mature because they had a lot of chores and schedules and had to listen to literally any adult (also the fact that kids had to know how to use A FUCKIN HUNTING GUN) But yeah I also thought that perspective was interesting too :)
I haven't watched Over the Garden Wall, but now that my boy Christopher Lloyd is in it, i just might. Last movie he was in (or so i thought) was that one with the abandoned subway or something like that, he's supposed to be a short little like one scene character, a janitor or maintenance man.
The series is so good They are half brother and the dad wants Wirt to be more outgoing and social Its the land of the dead they nearly died if they stayed in there they would have died really nice
I watched this with some friends of mine last year for Halloween and I absolutely loved it!!! It was so much fun and spooky and it really captured the spirit of Halloween with the haunted and scary woods of the American wilderness. It often gave me Sleepy Hollow vibes🥰
I really like editing Sophia jumping in to fill in blanks. I've giggled plenty of times about editing Sophia interjecting. . My favorite instance being that time you edited clown music, wig, and nose (I think it was in one of your ATLA vids) over yourself. I think the way you did it in this video was great given the complexity of the series. I enjoy your reactions and in a way editing Sophia is you reacting to yourself lol
I was thinking about the study that you were talking about and It reminded me Of a quote by Jim Carrey. I wish people can get everything they want Just so they can realize it’s not what they wanted. This is coming from a man who is rich and famous and still feels this way the guy pretty much snapped at one point
The one thing I find interesting about the shows setting is that the Unknown is it’s not like a different reality/ universe, it’s not between life or death, or past or present, it’s truly what it is unknown. It’s weird thinking about it and trying to guess how to to describe it but it really is what it is the unknown, seemingly different from what we live in and it’s unfamiliar but yet familiar in a weird way, which what brings me more to it is in fact unknown a sense of familiarity yet with a sense unfamiliarity that ties to you can’t say what the Unknown is or is not without trying to think about it not in a simple or light way. That is one of my favorite things about it is that nothing in Over the Garden Walk is really simple besides that plot of two brother lost in the woods trying to get home, once that’s over with it’s not simple at all yet it always ends up being simple and doesn’t go into weird places that throw it off, that what really sticks to me.
0:26:13 "Greg is DEFINITELY going to play a song with that ukulele" - Sophia *Greg immediately drops the ukulele* The timing of that made me laugh too hard. 🤣 edit: This was a great reaction! I thought your conclusion at the end was really thoughtful.
Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you did a commentary style video on this show because I haven't seen another person do it in this type of format! I really enjoyed your video, and I'm glad you did a first reaction in this commentary format because many videos I've seen have been on the more analytical side, so it's nice to see you really have fun with watching this show for the first time! I had watched the series for a 2nd time, and I didn't even realize the intro of the first episode were shots before Wirt and Greg got there. 😭I thought they were just b roll. 😭😭And, I'm so happy someone else thought Beatrice and Wirt could have been love interests because I thought I was the only one because it was too weird. 😂😂 And, my favorite thing about the show is probably the animation! I think they did such a good job! I LOVE how color is used throughout the show, starting with the vibrant warm hues of fall, almost transforming into the dreary days of winter as the show goes on. I feel like it might also symbolize an intra and interpersonal battle between the characters and themselves. I thought it was really well done! Along with that, I just really appreciate how a lot of the show (especially the time jumps and the ending) was really left up to the viewers' imagination! And, lastly, I just really like the nostalgic feeling this show gives me. ;-; Also, if you're open to hear another theory on this show, one of my friends actually introduced me to this show, and he believed that the show itself was more of like a battle with consciousness. Like as soon as Wirt decides to push back and really try to "wake up" (read: actually leave the woods or his dreams), he awakens in the river and doesn't drown. However, both me and him are still a bit hesitant to claim if this show is a dream or not. 😅 Anyway, I'm really glad you liked the show! I am also not keen to analyze things while watching, but I'm really glad you included humorous commentary while still analyzing and voicing your own perspectives! Also, I wanted to include that I agree with you saying that this show is better suited for watching it a second time. I think that way the gist of the plot is already understood, and there's more room for dissecting what the show is really about. I really enjoyed your video!!
A good clue you might have missed is the town with the skeletons is called Pottsfield. A Potters Field is another name for a graveyard
Wow I never knew that!!
Huh, I've watched it a few times and I just didn't know that. Neat. 'The more you know' as they say

YES! Thanks for saying that.
it’s not a theory that they were trapped in some sort of realm that represented passing on. the creator says it
Basically they died somehow and they're stuck in purgatory. Them "going home" is an analogy for heaven.
Also, there's only 10 episodes, first episode was the Dark Woods and the rest for each of the of the Nine Circles of Hell.
Also not a coincidence that Dante's lover who was leading him from Purgatory to Heaven is named Beatrice.
I think a lot Wirts insecurities stem from his parents divorce and his mom marrying again and getting a half brother. That’s why he lashed out at greg.
I think so too
his parents are presumed to be shermie pines and his ex wife now mother of greg universe, wirt's half brother
@@Orto-jj2di um.
@@ej-ej49 i know I know maybe shouldn't have brought it up here but still thought it'd be fitting to say here
Instead of a divorce, his dad may be dead.
Woodsman: "that dog is NOT the beast"
Her: "yeah that's absolutley the beast, beast go Bark Brak"
Lol, brak means mangy dog where I live
It's used more as a petname than in a bad way.
You might enjoy Gravity Falls. It's a closed story with just two seasons, and it's got a similar dark, quirky vibe that is entertaining for kids and adults.
Yesssssss
Yeah I love gravity falls
YES
Oh my gosh yes we need a gravity falls reaction
It also takes place in the state of Oregon for those who don't know
I just noticed how much Beatrice pushes them being “mindless, lost, aimless, and obedient” when she meets them.
Next move is yours, step-bro, you're in control of what happens...so what are you going to do about it?'
And Wirt takes a page from Greg.
Oh my goodness, maybe you should make an analysis video for this! So insightful 🤩
I highly recommend it...lots of blue birds, pumpkin patches and unexplained night-lights, too. ;-)
I ain't reading all that but I will assume u really like the series and give u a like
@@fredmedrano6584 much obliged.
Your analysis is EXCELLENT, and you're absolutely right that people saying Wirt has OCD are wrong, though not for the reason you state. I just wanna put in my 2 cents on Wirts mental state, if you dont mind :)
As a sufferer, the idea that OCD sufferers are clean freak, symmetry obsessed control nutcases is a COMPLETE myth perpetuated by media using ableist stereotypes about Neurodivergent people.
The "uncle" that Fred the horse went to, at the graveyard flashback a grave had his name on it!!
Omg I didn't even notice 😩
i just realized greg was throwing around candy the first episode, that's kind of a hint to halloween. How did I miss that?
RIGHT? I totally wrote it off as him being a kid that eats a lot of candy or something at first
The entirety of the "For Sara" tape can be found on UA-cam, it's as awkward as you can think, like reading someone's diary
It’s an AWESOME detail
I'VE BEEN WATCHING THIS SHOW ANNUALLY FOR YEARS AND I NEVER KNEW THAT WAS AVAILABLE WHAT THE HECK
Fun Fact: At the end with the final confrontation with the Beast, the song that's being sung is actually Greg's "Potatoes and Molasses" from episode 3 but sung in Latin.
Everything is more ominous in Latin.

I love wire's character arc so much
especially the little details like he's so salty in episodes 7-9, but then when he wakes up in the hospital the first thing he does is ask for greg. and also that "I was never any good to him alive either" UGH SO GOOD :')

I'm not sure if you caught this post-editing, but Greg did not lose hope.
This show is an aesthetic
And I kinda want to live it
If you liked that you should watch Infinity Train that's a great cartoon show with similar animation and a good moral.
Now there's three season 10 episodes each, every season is a separated story.
Yes! i love infinity train
Its so good!
yess!!!!
It's a fun tradition of mine to rewatch this every autumn around halloween.
i do that tooo!!!!!
I do that too, usually every October but sometimes I can't contain myself to watch it earlier
the jokes in this video are SO funny! also I didn't notice this until like my 3rd or 4th watch but every time you see the moon, its in that first quarter phase even though several nights seem to pass the moon never changes phases. This is because time isn't actually passing! On Halloween you see the 1st quarter moon, then all while they're in the unknown, the moon stays the same. It's SO SUBTLE BUT SO OBVIOUS
I think a really important thing to consider about the ending is the line "the loveliest lies of all"
OVER THE GARDEN WALL WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF MY FAVS
I LOVE this show. I’m so glad your watching it
This reminds me so much of that poem by Robert Frost "the woods are lovely, dark and deep but I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep."
This show is the literal definition of ‘nothing is as it seems’.
This format works so well with this show because I did think those same things whenever I rewatch it (I watch it every Halloween as a tradition!).
My boyfriend and I have watched OTGW every fall since it has come out :) It gives me all the crispy, spooky, fall feels and I love the soundtrack soooo much!
I just understand in the first scene 3:21 Greg is not just playing, is practicing to knock the woodsman hahaha
You should definitely react to Infinity Train!! It’s pretty short, but it has multiple episodes and seasons
What??
Does not make a lot sense and she said that she would not react to series
@@alexaltamirano9784 what?...
@@alexaltamirano9784 they mean that while it is a series, it's an anthology so each season is it's own story in the same world with different characters. So it's easy to binge a season (which is about the same length as Over the Garden Wall) and not necessarily feel as obligated to hurry and get to the next.
@@3choback thanks for the invite response yet se clearly said she would not make an other series
It's implied that since Beatrice and her family are in The Unknown (purgatory) that they will meet Wirt and Greg again someday :)
Edit: Also I totally shipped them too XD haha
My mom doesn't really watch cartoons, but she absolutely couldn't get enough of this show when my whole family and I watched it together
I just found your channel and wanted to say, that the graveyard was called Eternal Garden and thats why this is Over The Garden Wall
The mill in the first Episode is actually Beatrice's home! They live there in the end
idk if this has been said in the comments but during the first episode when greg was playing around the house he was actually practicing to knock out the old man
It wasn't a dream, they were in a sort of purgatory. They nearly died, so it was like a glimpse of the afterlife. So those angels you saw were exactly that, angels~
Aunty Whispers:
"The Ringing of the Bell Commands You!"
Aunty whispers sounds like an Exorcist despite being a witch.
Yes! I love this show! And the last song that plays when everything is coming to an end is soooooo good!
Wirt is such a realistic character omg
There are theories that over the garden wall's forest is similar to Dante's inferno. An interstice of purgatory dimenstion-time travels, fantasy and dream like landscapes. It can be real but also fantasy
Wirt and greg's hometown is aberdale from clarence
Wirt is son of shermie pines (gravity falls) and Greg is universe (steven universe)
Endticott is realted to their mother amking them real relatives.
A black train is infinity train in different form
Sara is connie's mom(SU)

Thank you so much for reacting to this, is one of my favourite shows!!! Also, I really appreciate that you took the time to make other comments after the editing 💛
Is a very well written show, and it bothers me that here in México some scenes were censored.
I just love everything about your videos lmao The lighting, your fit, what you have behind you, the reaction it self, the editing. So good lol

The woman talking about how it’s a bad omen for a Bluejay to enter a home is foreshadowing! It’s an old wives tale to say that if a bird flies into your house- especially a Bluejay, it means someone is going to die.
Gonna hop on the Infinity Train promotion... train... And say even if you don't end up making a reaction vid on it, it's worth the watch!

YEES, following the hype of the other comments, I also think you should give Infinity Train a try. I'm done these days, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, I highly recommend it. And it would be great to see your reaction to the three seasons (3 books). :)

It also was. It was purgatory
great video! i loved your perspective on the lore of the show at the end. never really looked at it that way so that was cool. also if you liked this I highly suggest watching Infinity Train.
Big parties like that don't have invitations, you just show up. I wish I had known that in high school!

Thanks for doing this. I watch it each year and enjoy it, so it makes me happy to see others enjoy it as well.
Just yesterday, I had my mom and my niece watch Over The Garden Wall and they loved it soooo much! I'm so glad you get to watch it too 💗

This whole show is like if folk/craft art made a cartoon.
By the way, the tavern is my favorite episode
And, my favorite thing about the show is probably the animation! I think they did such a good job! I LOVE how color is used throughout the show, starting with the vibrant warm hues of fall, almost transforming into the dreary days of winter as the show goes on. I feel like it might also symbolize an intra and interpersonal battle between the characters and themselves. I thought it was really well done! Along with that, I just really appreciate how a lot of the show (especially the time jumps and the ending) was really left up to the viewers' imagination! And, lastly, I just really like the nostalgic feeling this show gives me. ;-;
Also, if you're open to hear another theory on this show, one of my friends actually introduced me to this show, and he believed that the show itself was more of like a battle with consciousness. Like as soon as Wirt decides to push back and really try to "wake up" (read: actually leave the woods or his dreams), he awakens in the river and doesn't drown. However, both me and him are still a bit hesitant to claim if this show is a dream or not. 😅
Anyway, I'm really glad you liked the show!
