Fun fact about the second episode: Potsfield is based on the concept of a Potter's field or Pauper's grave where poor people are buried in unmarked graves and forgotten. It's actually genuinely a nice place because everyone knows everyone's names and they get to have a nice community, even if the origins of death are dark.
fun facts this is the first mini-series created by Cartoon Network, Wirt was originally named Walter and the show originally planned to be a regular tv series.
@@thatonkgau5221 Yeah. Although I sometimes wondered if his name was meant as part of why he was so anxious. Like maybe it got made fun of as a kid and then he just kept thinking people didn't really want him at parties etc when in reality they'd long gotten over the name thing. (Seriously though why name a kid Wirt? Mostly Wirt is a surname and not one I think works as a first.)
I just subbed to you like a day ago and you bless me with this? OVER THE GARDEN WALL?! The animation Elijah Wood came out of retirement for because he loved the story so much? Bless you
It's often theorized that the unknown was a limbo between life and death and not real many people (me included) do believe it's real though because of us seeing how the other characters stories resolved and the frog having the bell in his stomach when they woke up in the hospital. As someone who does not like horror this is my go to fall show.
IIRC the show runners have said that it isn't simply limbo, it's the place where everything and everyone that is "lost" in one way or another end up or something, I'll need to reread what it was exactly
@@Spyko-yes, i like the idea that it’s a place where people between life and death go bc their souls are momentarily “lost”. they haven’t died yet but they aren’t quite alive, so they are “lost” for that moment until they either fight to live or succumb to the beast.
You were so there for that Jimmy-storyline (and if you wanna hear Ms. Langtree's song uninterrupted, you can find the full version in the soundtrack!). Also in the finale, this is the first time I've noticed, but in the hospital Jason was holding hands with the girl who said he could hold hands with her.
you can tell in the beginning Beatrice was trying so hard to repress her conscience by dismissing Wirt and Greg's humanity. Wirt was so obedient it didn't matter if he spent his life getting ordered around, Greg was so naive and foolish he'd just hurt himself, they're annoying and unpleasant, and no one will miss them. They're lost and alone anyway, isn't it for the best they have Adelaide to house them at least? Justifying it to herself, trying to get them there quickly because she knows she can't keep lying to herself like that for long if she gets to know them...
Where can you find the graphic novels? I just searched for them on Barnes & Noble because that’s where I get almost all my books, comics, etc but couldn’t find them
Just wondering, what comics were your favorite? I was planning on buying Volume 1 for my friend's birthday, but is there another collection that you thought was better?
@cojec They're all great, starting at volume 1 is great, and then going down the list down to volume 5, then there are the individually named graphic novels after that
Greg:"Adelaide! Adelaide! Come on and join the Adelaide parade!" Wirt:"No..." Beatrice:"Nope!" This series is a great adaptation of the story of "The Divine Comedy"(Dante's Inferno), if you look at it a certain way(I'm not the originator of this theory, so just going off someone else's know how). Wirt is Dante, Greg is Virgil and the name of Dante's lover who he travels to hell to rescue her is Beatrice. The Gates and the Nine Circles: 1. The Old Grist Mill: Purgatory, Wirt and Greg are pursued by a wolf(in "Inferno", they are pursued by a tiger and wolf). 2.Hard Times at the Huskin' Bee: Limbo. Wirt and Greg are judged by Enoch, the ruler of the town, who says he HAS to punish them and whose limbs resemble snakes(similar to Minos, king of Crete, who judges all who enter hell). Fun fact: A potters field is a nickname for a mass grave. 3.Schooltown Follies: Lust. Miss Langtree is left absolutely unable to teach properly due to her fixation on Jimmy Brown. Fun fact: The whole soundtrack is on youtube and you can hear her full song there. 4.Song of the Dark Lantern: Gluttony. Greg takes more and more food, but we never see him eat any of it, and he starts the episode caring more about eating than the threat of the Beast. Fun fact: In a deleted scene, Fred reveals he wasn't talking because Greg had been feeding him meat(hence the "lipstick"). The song that the Beast sings as the Woodsman shouts after him is similar to a song from the"Hansel and Gretel"opera. The taverngoers all cheer the Highwayman's discussion of attacking people and robbing them, as it's an "honest"living. Meanwhile, the Beast convinces people to do his work for him, with him having manipulated the Woodsman to keep his soul alive by pretending it was his daughters. 5.Mad Love: Quite obviously, greed. Quincy is all about the money. Fred's own greed leads him to try to steal the more expensive nick nacks, while Quincy is so greedy, he keeps expanding his mansion to the point that it butts against Marguerites(little is known if she's greedy as well, but we can theorize!0 Fun fact: Fred belonged to the Highwayman, so it's not surprising he wants to steal. "I wanna steal." Two pennies is needed to cross the river to Hades in Greek Mythology, giving hints to where the boys are. 6.Lullaby in Frogland: Wrath. Yes, it's not as stated outwardly, but upon completing the series, we see that Wirt, upon discovering Beatrice's betrayal, steals the scissors that could have helped her and her family because he was mad at her. Fun fact: You can see Adelaide has a hourglass symbol on the back of her shawl. Given she wraps the boys up in wool, it's similar to a black widow spider. 7.The Ringing of the Bell: Heresy. Lorna and Auntie Whispers appear as classic puritans, with Lorna being put to regular work and having her overworked to keep her from wickedness(though really, it's the demon/spirit that does it). 8.Babes in the Woods: Violence. The cloud kingdom and the North Wind's forces battle it out when Greg accidentally frees them. Fun fact: The title is based on a story, which is very much like "Hansel and Gretel". Basically, two orphans are going to be killed by ruffians, with one of their number killing the other two and then promising to return with food for the orphans, but never doing so. The children wander in the woods until they starve to death and birds cover their bodies with leaves. Such a happy ending... 9.Into the Unknown: Fraud: Wirt feels inadequate before Jason Funderberker, and feels like a fraud when it comes to everything to do with Sarah and her friends. We see that everyone really likes him, with Sarah inviting him to come to the cemetery with them and them excitedly waving at him when he shows up at the party. It also takes place on Halloween, where everyone tries to be someone else. 10.The Unknown: Treachery. The Beast's trademark, where we learn that the Beast has been manipulating the Woodsman. In "Inferno", the punishment for treachery is being transformed into a tree(similar to the Edelwood's)and we see that the Beast is made up entirely of the trees of that breed. Fun fact: When Wirt finds Greg in the Edelwood, a sad version of "Potatoes and Molasses"is playing in Dutch. This is a series I love to watch every October, perfect autumn series.
If you're looking for other shows i would recommend infinity train. It has a similar story structure to Over the garden wall (though the vibes are not exactly the same). Each season also has 10 episodes of similar length to this one and there are only 4 seasons. I think you might enjoy the story and specially the characters :)
the show was too short but honestly think of it like this: the creator has said if they made an entire TV show, the story wouldn't have been as powerful and they wouldn't have had the budget to make the animation that good. we're lucky we got this the way it was

Unless it’s assumed that the people produced from the school are going to make a lot of money. A lot of Ivy League and high profile schools imbed loyalty based in notoriety to keep their alumni donating.
Or he meant it more like someone would "invest" into their town. Not necessarily to make straight money back, but to add a net positive to the town that increases the towns value/attractiveness to new people
There’s not a lot of official merch, but small artists (like me!) have been wonderful products on their own And honestly, the individual artist merch are soo pretty, all of them

28:28 So the guy that voiced Fred, Fred Stoller, couldn't do horse noises so that's why he neighs like that, but Patrick McHale the creator of the show said that's fine if he didn't know how since Fred was going to be talking anyway
one of the things I liked about this show is that most things were not as they appeared, the woodsman and pumpkin people seemed ominous or dangerous but both turned out to be benign and having no ill will or intentions to our group, the school we're suspicious of cause it seems off and has a cheery tone but everything was fine. The show does a pretty decent job of being misleading on just about everything except for the 'beast', but even he was deceptive enough when interacting with and tricking the younger brother
- The frog had the bell on his belly at the end, confirming the whole journey wasn't a dream, so either they were somehow transported to the afterlife, or mor likely: they died and that scene in the hospital are them "Dancing in a swirl of golden memories" because "if dreams can't come true, then why not pretend?... truly *The loveliest lies of all...* - Beatrice home is the same abandoned place the woodsman was using on ch1 and you see her family sheltering from cold on a tree, they all probably died in a specially hard winter - in the intro of Ep 1, you see human beatrice, she's upset and a bluebird passes by, plus, at the end you can see that she's considerably better dressed than the rest of her family, so probably she, as the elder daughter, was the chosen one for an arrange marriage with the objective of taking her family out of poberty - on Ep 9 when Wirt is stalking the other kids in the graveyard, he hides behind a gravestone with the name "Endicott" on it, like the super rich dude
so some theory that honestly holds a decent amount of ground that I've been seeing is that their entire adventure was them on the brink of death in the water, they went on an entire journey in the beyond that in reality only lasted at most a minute if you're being generous. They found themselves there when they lost consciousness in the water and is why they were in the water when they got back. It also lends a decent bit of weight to the whole 'you're early' and 'not quite ready to join us' phrases from the village of the dead
I want you to know something about Pottsfield from episode 2, and why it's my favorite episode. A potters field is a place where the dead are buried when they die all alone with no one to claim their bodies and no money for proper burial. It is a mass grave in an empty field where all those anonymous people are buried together. The reason I tell you this is I find the idea of Pottsfield town to be kinda sweet. All of these people who died alone with no family or anyone to claim them, re-emerge among a crowd of their piers eagerly waiting for them to join the party, all under the watchful eye of Enoch and his soothing sultry voice. (btw Enoch is the black cat). I just find this to be such a comforting depiction of death and the afterlife.
24:10 in the soundtrack version of the song she sings, "langtree's lament", it's revealed that jimmy's been gone for just 3 days, so the wound's still fresh i guess 😂
I love this show so much too. It's my favorite thing about fall 🧡🖤 Luckily there's lots of little details that makes the rewatch awesome. Also damn girl, you predicted so much, way to go!!!

I'm so glad you enjoyed this show so much~! X3 It's one of my favorites and I feel like it was a bit of a sleeper hit. Well loved by those who've watched it, but... Needs more love~!
Ooh, I got a fun show recommendation for you. Considering you have talked about having a Younger sibling, maybe you have seen this, but would you mayhaps ever react to Bluey?
Oeh i would love a Courage the Cowardly Dog reaction 🥰 (it's been ages i watched that show😍) And tbh i haven't seen a reaction channel do this before🤔🤷🏾♀️

The show was never actually planned to be a regular series! It was envisioned as 18 episodes and then later was cut down to 10.
It feels weird to think of this show being intended to be longer because 10 episodes fits perfectly with the, uh, overarching metaphor.
its basically Dante's inferno for kids but they traverse through limbo instead of hell.

Hollow Knight music be sending me to a different vibe everytime haha
The shortness and the longing to see it again for the first time is the point. It makes you want to watch it again and again every year.
I love this show so much too. It's my favorite thing about fall 🧡🖤 Luckily there's lots of little details that makes the rewatch awesome. Also damn girl, you predicted so much, way to go!!!
