    Paul Harrell’s “shaboom” technique really helped me. The trigger pull should last as long as saying the phrase would take. He discussed it in his Beretta accuracy video. One smooth motion with no snap at the end, which usually flicks the front sight to the right when snapped.

    Dry practice is the key. I plateaued in skill until I started to dry practice with my handgun. It has taught me trigger control, trigger dinger placement, grip control, forearm tension, all of it for just the cost of snap caps. Best $15 I ever spent.

      viewatyourownrisk very true I used snap caps and dry firing at the range and that helped me a lot with my DA/SA pistol. I also worked on correct grip and I can now shoot confidently at 10-20 yards

      I fired only revolvers from 1989 up to 2022, when I moved to a 9 mm pistol. I just hated the double action from my Taurus PT92 when I got it. Two years later, sometimes I think about to deactivate its sear to use it as a DA only gun. For my surprise, I can make a single round large hole with it at seven meters pulling the trigger as fast as I can as soon as I have the sights on. Maybe the gun isn't all that bad or maybe many years pulling heavy long triggers and A LOT of dry firing.
      I don't use snap caps, sorry.

    I was fortunate to be able to spend a couple days training with Ernest back in January. It was the best training I've ever received, and I chose that course specifically because I wanted a trainer who really knew the DA/SA platform and not someone who just had the attitude of, "you should ditch that thing and get a Glock." There are plenty of good shooters, but as we all know, being a good shooter doesn't make someone a good teacher. Coming from an educational background myself, it was very clear to me that Ernest has put a lot of time and effort not just into shooting, but into teaching techniques as well. If you have an opportunity to train with LTT, I would say don't hesitate.

    My first and only pistol is a Sig p250c 9mm. I bought it and started learning how to shoot less then a year ago on my own in the country. I cannot tell you how frustrating it was. Either I was anticipating where the bullet would end up or the BANG was hard to get used to and my grip was awful. Once I finally learned the very basic fundamentals of proper grip, everything else started to fall into place. I’m not saying I’m a great shot by ANY means but I totally feel like from that specific point, everything is uphill from there. What helped me was to not overthink anything and that helps create a sense of being comfortable and that lets yourself be natural. I like my super heavy trigger with a 2 mile pull. I doubt I’ll ever be able to go with anything but a duty/self defense style trigger. My p250c configuration is perfect for a new shooter/CCW holder. It’s simple and rock solid functionality helped me understand how pistols operate. I carry my p250c daily and I’ll stake my life that this pistol will shoot when I need it to.

    I've found during dry fire with J, K, and N frame revolvers that the trigger seems to have a preferred speed at which it is pulled to give a smoother and lighter feel to the trigger finger. Once you find that pace, the front sight moves a lot less. I'm not the greatest shooter on the Internets so take it for what it's worth.

    Great video! Im no pro shooter, but in the half dozen years I have been into shooting I have preferred revolvers. My first gun was an old taurus 82 south American police trade in. I could not hit a damn thing with that pistol!
    Since then, I traded it in for something different thinking the firearm was my reason for incompetence at shooting. I sold that one too and committed to learning to shoot a revolver. Now I have a few revolvers and a couple DA/SA autos and have been carrying concealed for about a year now, so my experience is limited.
    I have found using certain tips from certain videos that helped me a lot before I watched this one. I cant remember the specific video or trainer, but he had said to try and release the double action trigger at the rate which you pull it in one fluid motion. Trying this took a couple boxes of ammo, but once I got the hang of it with my ol’ gp100, I started to make some sloppy groups on paper. I think this is about the same thing as keeping the trigger rolling, just a slightly different way to think about what your fingers are doing. Basically you need to move it steadily to the rear and steadily to the front to shoot accurately with accurate follow up shots.
    I also found with double action, grip and technique is more important than sight picture at practical ranges. The heavier trigger pulls command a very firm and positive grip on the pistol. If your are firmly and positively gripping the gun incorrectly you can be positive that you will miss. If you focus on always gripping the gun in the way you have practiced, high up on the grip, forearm directly behind the barrel, the trigger pull will command your muscle memory to point that barrel where it needs to be(close enough anyways). Semi autos have a little more forgiveness, and so does a revolver in single action IMO.
    I like how you mentioned to maybe try putting your finger in a different spot on the trigger. I have found with double action, I let my finger slide ever so slightly across the trigger as i pull. Maybe a quarter of an inch of movement. I would not take this as advice but it seems to work for me. All my guns have smooth rounded triggers, except my charter arms bulldog. The bulldog has a textured grooved trigger and I definitely shoot the worst groups with it. Could be many factors, but I think it does not allow my finger to slide from tip to knuckle as smooth as all my other pistols.
    I feel this trigger technique of allowing the finger to slide on the trigger, helped my DA/SA auto skill to develop too. (Let me know if this is bad technique!!!!) For me accurate single action pistol shooting requires a very slight bit of relaxation on grip to let the firearm just surprise me a little bit when it goes off. Doing this on most single action autos seems to reset the trigger without thinking about it, as long as you are not focused on holding the trigger to the rear(which if you practice double action you would never do!)

    Fantastic video! I've always preferred DA/SA though mastering the double action is tough. having large hands, I tend to do the first knuckle joint through and roll the trigger. It really works well as you get better leverage. Having it explained as constant motion of the hammer compressed by time also explains it incredibly well. Thanks!

    • @MikeDCWeld
      @MikeDCWeld 5 років тому

      Maybe it works well with your gun, but it won't work with mine. If I get to the first joint the tip of my finger hits the frame just before the hammer releases and I can't squeeze the trigger any farther to the rear. Also, you're technically losing leverage as the second joint is your fulcrum and moving the load closer to the fulcrum increases the amount of force needed to move it through the same distance.

    I think Jeff Cooper was right. What throws many people off is the transition from DA to SA. When you practice with revolvers in DA, or with striker-fired guns like Glock, or with SA-only guns, like 1911, this problem does not manifest itself because they are consistent.

  • @Me2Lancer
    @Me2Lancer 5 років тому +2

    Great advice. Learning to become proficient on a DA revolver should provide the skills needed on a DA/SA pistol. I just watched a review where the reviewer complained of finger discomfort on the DA pull of 10 lbs. He was using the tip of his finger and complained he had to use the pad of his finger.

  • @jk.smalls

    The thing I like about da is it forces you to hold a steady sight picture for longer, which helps you be a better shooter overall. I do stage my triggers for accuracy but I can speed that up to combat shooting speed and do so pretty consistently. That half second pause also serves as an additional opportunity to evaluate the target and backstop.

      This is just my opinion, but I think if revolver companies were more competitive price-wise you may see a surge in revolver sales, but when you have a companies like Glock selling autos on the cheap revolvers become sort of a nichè market for collectors. Plus everyone thinks the zombie apocalypse could happen any day now.

Really, the advice talked about here is fairly sound, in the context of “you are under pressure to quickly and accurately get off that first DA shot.” 🤔

He told me to balance a coin of a shell casing at the end of my pistol and pull the trigger without letting the object fall off the end of my gun. I find that trick, or at least envisioning it, as I pull a DA trigger to be very effective at teaching me how to pull a DA trigger. Strengthen your grip and hands so you become strong enough to pull the trigger without adjusting grip.
      It is possible.

    During my last time at the range with a rented 686 in .357 mag, I had troubles to even hit the target at 25m in DA. I had something like 3/5 hits. This vid will help me a lot, as I either hammered or staged the trigger. Now that I know the right way, it should go better next time.
    Handgun shooting is hard for me, being really more into rifles. Guess it'll come with time... Still have to do some paperwork to be able to get my 1rst handgun, everything's kinda slow here in France.

      I just want to point out, out of 5 shots, if you're hitting 3 you are hitting greater than 50% of shots. Statistically that's quite good. Considering data on LEO's tends to be they hit about 20% of shots.

      25 yards with double action is challenging. Try shooting 1-inch and 2-inch circles at 3 to 7 yards. That is also difficult, but it's all about trigger control. Out to 25, your ammo selection and sight adjustment become big factors and it's tough to diagnose issues if you're dealing with that *and* trigger control.

    • @lrs2319
      @lrs2319 5 років тому +1

      @@LuckyGunner Thanks for your answer, but this kind of training will be impossible to make in most french shooting ranges, including the ones of my area. Shooting with handguns at 25 yards is seen as a sport, while shooting at 3 to 7 yards is seen as defense... and we can't own or shoot guns for defensive purposes. So shooting that close is forbidden by the ranges. I'm still going to be on the lookout for ranges that could maybe allow me to do that... and in the mean time I'll continue to train at 25 yards.
      Enjoy your freedoms while you still can. Have a nice day.

    The double action semi autos tend to have better double action than a double action revolver but the single action on revolvers are better I think.. if you can get good with a double action on a revolver you should be able to shoot a Beretta 92 CZ 75 or other similar guns even better

      I taught my wife how to shoot my beretta 92 compact with perfect accuracy out to 7 yards in only about 4 hours of range time. She’s never shot gun before. Let alone a DA/SA trigger.

      Ps, I’m for a 22lr for a women. When considering most women shooting, less recoil equals more shots on target.
