- First on "CBS This Morning," former Olympian gymnasts Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian are coming forward about sexual abuse by former U.S. national team doctor, Larry Nassar. Nassar is serving up to 235 years in prison after he was found guilty of sexually abusing athletes in his care for decades. Both athletes are members of the current NCAA champion UCLA gymnastics team, led by coach Valorie Kondos Field, a 36-year veteran. Ross, Kocian and Field join us in Studio 57 to share their stories.

Maddy seemed very shaken when the interviewer interrogated her about whether the girls knew it was abuse/talked about it amongst themselves. It was a harsh, insensitive question. I felt bad for her.
Yeah Gayle's question about "didn't you guys talk about it?" was so insensitive.
agreed that it was harsh but at the same time i think people who tend to not believe victims turn to that kind of question to say "well there's no way not a single one of them talked about it" so maybe it was good they could address that? idk - not sure there's any good way to interview child molestation victims on national tv. i do agree with another poster that in that section "interrogated" is the correct term. man what a horrible situation
I admire Miss Val so much. The amount of Olympians and World Champions that come through her door to compete for UCLA is more than any other college for a reason. With all that these young women went through and the amount of them that she has coached/coaches, she finds a way to build them up so they can continue to compete in the sport they love. It’s like USAG uses them up and spits them out and she is there to save them💙💙💙

Much respect to both Kyla and Maddie for coming forward. I don't think some people consider just how much pressure these gymnasts are under. Supposedly, the training at the Karolyi ranch was much more vigorous than even the olympics themselves. These girls were worked until they were ready to collapse so they would be ready for the big competitions. Being so physically and emotionally exhausted and so pressured to succeed left them willing to accept any form of gentleness, like Larry Nassar. He gained their trust. He snuck them food when they were supposed to be on strict diets, and he put on a facade as a "friend" and "ally" to these girls so that they would feel guilty about coming forward with what he did to them. Those that came forward were silenced and everyone suffered for it. Thank god that pig is in prison. He deserves to stay there forever. Also, this means that all 5 members of the 2012 Olympic team was abused by Nassar. How sad is that?
Yes, and almost all of the 2016 team as well. I haven't read or heard anything from Laurie Hernandez, but time will tell. It is such a shame and it makes me angry that USAG has not atoned for their mistakes and continues to ignore these girls. They could at least call and offer an apology.
Its sickening he was allowed to ruin so many young women's lives. Larry Nassar, he was utter filth!
Wow, so proud of these girls. I’m happy they share their love for the sport, while sharing their issues with USAG and how they are conducting things after these girls have come out. I’m glad Val was there too, Kyla and Madison probably felt more protected and safe with her there.

im a former gymnast and i met kyla in hawaii last year and just watched the documentary of nassar and USAG. growing up watching all these gymnasts and not knowing whats going on behind the scenes is actually sickening. im happy they got justice and i hope they find peace
I'm really impressed by these two young women. They're poised, articulate and brave to put themselves in the spotlight. It must be really, really hard for them to address their horrendous experiences in public, and to be questioned about it by reporters. Bravo, Madison and Kyla! You are beautiful people.

How Amazing and Strong Kyla and Maddy are for stepping up and acknowledging that USAG needs to apologize for their wrong doing! Here are two GOLD medal winning women whom USAG earned money of their blood, sweat and silence yet not even an acknowledgement from them.

I’m really angry at the people asking them the questions. You could tell Madison wanted to vomit a couple of times having to remember how he got away with it for so long. Kyla and Madison were fighting tears. Thank god Miss Val was there. I think they felt more comfortable with her there. Still, this is very hard to watch without tearing up and wanting to vomit myself. No respect or regard for the abuse and trauma they went through. These interviewers are insensitive jerks!

No they're not.....I didn't get that impression; I got the impression that this was an insightful interview w/in the time constraints. You seem to be projecting the seriousness of the crimes onto the interviewers themselves.
UCLA just does an amazing job with their athletes. Coach Val is incredible and these women are so strong for coming forward. USAG needs to speak up and so does Kerry Perry and help these girls cope with everything. Not keep making bland public statements..

Oh, come on....I didn't get that impression at all. No interviewer is perfect w/ her approach....remember, she too is on a time constraint for the feature, so she was trying to cover all the bases w/ the time she had. There is a place for further deeper discussion, and that's a longer feature that'd explore the issue more in depth.

I find it very telling that Maddie Kocian trained at WOGA and had this treatment from Nassar, yet Nastia Liukin was protected from getting treatments from Nassar. I think Valeri Liukin knew and only protected his own daughter.
I thought about that too actually. If Valeri Liukin knew, I'd like to know why he didn't try to protect the others. I'm not saying he's a bad person cause I don't know the whole story. I'm just saying, that is a very thought provoking point.

Jackson Catlett That is a very valid point. It may not have mattered but I will say what if it was Nastia? Maybe Luikin respected Nassar and didn't believe it. We'll never know. I wonder about Shawn Johnson. If he ever treated her.
I feel like Valeri did not know. Nassar knew which girls he could take advantage of and I think Nastia was too much of a risk to mess with because of her dad's position in USAG, so he wouldn't go near Nastia. Also, none of the 2008 Olympic team (correct me if I'm wrong) publicly came forward as victims of Nassar so maybe the abuse was less prevalent with their age group. Idk just my thoughts!!!

Agreed. It's so sad but I pretty much assume all the girls are victims, until they state otherwise. So glad these two had the courage to share their stories and hopefully can start on the path to healing somehow.

That was actually a really good interview
The majority of abuse cases happen from somebody close to a family whether its a parent, sibling or friend. These girls were done wrong and the gymnastics programs should be shut down.
pretty simple solution is get rid of that male majority number of coaches, photographers, cameramen and board members running the organization. I've yet to see one woman coaching a man's sport, why are so many men coaching girls??? The solution is not to shut down the sport; changes are being made with education that suggests girls not be alone with a coach, as well as how they are allowed to spot/touch her. Awareness is key. One of the best sports on the planet, without the abuse.

The issue is that many of them, going back to the 90s, DID speak out. They reported the behavior, but everyone who was in positions of authority just did not believe them and refused to take action

Have been seeing people not wearing any of their USAG jackets anymore and even leaving gymnastics for other sports and dance now because of their and their parents’ disgust with such an apathetic heartless organization

I am so very proud of all these young women, all who are a part of bringing sexual abuse/assault to the light of day, out of the darkness and brought to an end once and for all!
I’m speaking of these survivors, and hopefully other survivors out there, I hope their predator, their abuser will be stopped as well.
We live on this a huge planet we call earth...The scary nightmare of a truth is so many more young women and men, infants, young children, teens, young adults and adults are out here, somewhere hiding in the darkness of their own nightmares. Being a survivor myself, it doesn’t matter how old we are..as it ended for me in my 20’s. So age plays no matter in who can be harmed. Somehow, someway I PRAY the people out there harming others comes to a stop. Just STOP now! Even if they are never caught, just leaving these victims alone once and for all is so important to their futures and wellbeing. I pray, beg that if anyone is reading this and happens to be abusing a child or someone now...please, just STOP! Give their tomorrow’s a chance, give them a chance at happiness. If the abuser thought nothing wrong in what they were doing, then it wouldn’t be such a secret.
What all these awesome, most beautiful young women did and are doing for the protection of so many in the future is fantastic..All these women are so courageous, they are all amazing survivors and I thank each and every one of them! Also, thank you for not stopping here as you make known and make accountable ALL who knew and knows the truth in the harm that came to the survivors and many others!

Why are there so many people calling interviewers insensitive? They ask very important questions. We need to know the answers, because it's counterintuitive to what people assume. Everyone expects that their child will come to them crying if anything like that happens, and culprit will get punished the next day. This case (and let's not forget Jimmy Saville and other cases) shows how silently these things happen, and people need to know why.

I know that discussing this is a personal decision for each athlete,but I can’t help but wonder why Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin hasn’t really shared if they were affected. I know Nastias Dad was her coach so maybe that kept her safe. Those are just thoughts that have crossed my mind especially since I am a huge fan of Shawn.

Maddie was still a member of his gym. No, he is not at fault but he certainly should have scrutinized USAG.
Valeri is at fault because he was a team coach even before he was the director. He was high up within the gymnastics aristocracy due to the gymnasts he coached to gold medal AA wins. Marta Karolyi is most at fault, but I don't believe either one of them knew nothing. It was their business to know. Plus Valeri Liukin has been accused by name by Maddie Larson of mental abuse, and perpetuating the culture of fear and silence that allowed the sexual abuse from Larry Nassar. She personally experience this from Valeri, specifically. People need to stop excusing the adults in charge of this organization. It was their job to protect these teenaged girls and I believe they were informed on many occasions by gymnasts we have never heard of because they were dismissed for exercising their voice. Maddie Kocian just confirmed the fact that you would be dismissed for speaking up and others have said the same thing. I'm sure they all saw it happen.

I can't imagine one sexual assault much less repeated hundreds of times to each, to over a hundreds of girls. Thank God for Ms. Val and her care for the lucky young ladies her were fortunate to become her gymnasts.

I'm sorry to hear this about them but I'm not surprised. Denial is a powerful tool to use when our brains can't fathom what actually happened to us. I get it. Been there and done it. So I pray that they find the healing they need to keep moving forward with their lives. And I hold space that the culture of abuse ends and these ladies get to compete in a sport they love without fear.
I am sorry you have experienced that but, yes it is important to explain to people who don't understand how someone can "let" this happen to them for so long, or how they can wait a long period of time before telling anyone. It is amazing what we will convince ourselves is normal. And then there is the attempt to convince yourself after the fact (if the abuse stops or you are able to completely get away from the person for good) that you can move and forget it without it having any other affect one you. I also pray for these and the other unseen women who have suffered in this that they will be able to move forward without this tainting their lives and memories of what should have been an incredible experience.

The so-called hosts of this "show" lapsed into "lawyer" mode as they were questioning the girls and Coach Val. This was not an "interview" this was a pro-Nassar legal team out to discredit these brave women and Coach Val.

King of Everything I maybe losing my marbles but I have never been so childishly arrogant to think that I can tell another person to "shut up". I find that level of thinking sad and laughable. You have a long road ahead and you are starting out with many burdens and the way will become tiresome.
I think some of those questions that lapsed into "lawyer mode" have been asked by thousands of people who truly dont understand how it happened. they dont understand it so its easy to discredit them. So these hosts are trying to answer those to show the realness of what happened and how normalized it was, and that the girls truly didn't know what was really happening. I agree though, the way they posed the questions were off putting and was disheartening, i have seen many interviews with the same sort of questions posed differently and it came across much more informative than discrediting.

I am really impressed with Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian. They are 2 of my favorite gymnasts, and I truly feel their pain. However, I still have a problem with people remembering that they have been abused a long time after the facts. I am starting to wonder if the more the man is accused, the more gymnasts are going to remember that they were abused, too. I do realize that this point of view is unpopular, and for good reasons.

What a horrible thing to happen to these girls, but their goal was to get to the Olympics. If they spoke up back then, it probably would've ruined their chances of making the team. I say that because I find it odd that this happened to so many girls over so many years, yet no one spoke up, no one went on TV to point fingers at Nasser.
Why couldn't they say it earlier? Were they Like threatened or something? Not saying to wasn't a horrible thing for him to do it's just I'm interested in this story but don't know anything else apart from the disturbing and disgusting stuff he did to the girls....

Check out the number of perfect 10s she scored last year. She got taller than average and continued to be a beautiful gymnast.

these gymnasts are equally responsible for not reporting the doctor right away. The athletes and their parents put getting a "gold medal" ahead of the safety of themselves and future athletes after them. This is the world we live in. Blame other people because we have failed to act. Why werent the parents at the doctor appointments with these female athletes? Why didnt these athletes ask for someone to be present with them? These women and their parents have no one to blame but themselves. They sure looked OK when they were parading around the country with the medals. NOW, they come out of the woodworks? Very Sad!
They were children who were sexually abused by a serial predator. They are young women now, but were middle schoolers when this happened. Why are you blaming them?
