  • Mattie Larson talks about how the gymnasts were treated at the USA gymnastics Karolyi Ranch training facility in Texas during the sixth day of Larry Nassar’s sentencing in Lansing Mich., on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018. The Karolyi Ranch was shut down last week (Joel Bissell | MLive.com)

    Her testimony about the ranch just opens up so many questions about the environment these girls are training in outside Larry Nassar. Feels like the whole program needs investigation.

      Leshamajigga And how come none of those girls' parents had a clue what was happening? Did they just relinquish all authority to the coaches and Larry Nassar? Why would you put a gymnastics training camp in the middle of nowhere? These kids were not training for some secret military mission!!

They would have lost everything they worked for and most likely they would be branded troublemakers and wouldn't be believed. Their parents and relatives would be disappointed. Just because these girls are superb athletes does not mean they are emotionally mature. To stand up to sexual harassment in the work place is difficult for an adult woman. These girls are 12, 13, 14...and are kept isolated while they train. I don't know why I bother to try to explain. Thank God there are wonderful men in this world, but looking at some of these comments, it's pretty obvious what girls and women are up against.

      TheFuzzieWuzzie TheFuzzieWuzzie Yes, I agree, aside from feeling enraged by this young woman (who still appears like a young girl) suffering so intensely and deeply, and wanting to just scoop her up in my arms and comfort her forever, I have a new understanding of the concept of brave. After being exposed BY this depraved and pitiful ‘man’, so many of these girls, in addition to naming names, exposed themselves, yet again, but this time willingly, describing their abuse in the most graphic detail, in order to evoke the longest punishment possible for the perpetrator. I can’t EVER imagine publicly OR PRIVATELY exposing myself, my body, my most private self, which should NEVER, EVER for anybody, be invaded by ANYONE, the way these girls and women have. I think I would let my perp go free before I would ever have anyone expose any part of me like that again. I hope these women stay together and support each other and become a great force. They seem to be headed in that direction. Six years of a life threatening eating disorder: what is wrong with people that makes it possible for this to take place? I hate when people say, “I mind my own business,” as if proud of that, when it means possibly allowing someone to be hurt or continue being hurt, and they know it. Like a child being told not to be a tattletale and not modifying this advice as they grow up. And it is part of a cult mentality, hiding, protecting perpetrators instead of victims- why?

      M M goes beyond that, everybody in the gymnastics community said and always thought to be invited to the ranch, being in the national team and representing their country was SUCH HONOR... when you are brainwashed like that is hard to come forward and tell how you really feel. Plus gymnastics is a harsh sport, gymnasts learn that if you just pull through one more time and put your pain behind, it will be better. Those are a bad mix.

It's a fairly common parental instinct kind of thing e.g. I love the little bastards, they're so cute and I wanna help raise them and give them morals and support. Nothing pedophilic over here - much the opposite. I'd gladly cut the hands off anyone who dares to mistreat a kid.

    She was petrified of everyone in charge EXCEPT her abuser. This environment the karolyi's and everyone else created ALLOWED him to manipulate the trust of children looking for some form of support and operate this way for so long. If she had been met with support and love from all the adults ie LIKE CHILDREN SHOULD BE GETTING REGARDLESS OF THEIR 'MISTAKES' (let's not even pretend her 'mistakes' were her fault, it's tumbling, that shit is difficult under the best of situations and we're talking about a severely physically and emotionally abused child who was evidently STARVING), he would never have had this much power over so many children.

Willie - the gymnastics community has been talking about this since 2016 when the news of the allegations and investigations broke, yet ONLY NOW have mainstream media and the public caught onto this. It took 4/5 of an olympic gold medal team to come forward as abuse survivors for media to latch onto this. It took literally the greatest gymnast ever to come forward as an abuse survivor for media to latch onto this. So yeah, it really stings how much no one cares.

      Chelsea- this sport certainly is tough. I watch my 10 yr. old during gymnastics practice and by the next day, she’s pretty (sometimes really) sore. It’s hard work. I watch the older girls at practice and am completely amazed by what the human body can do/endure. Some of the coaches are really tough on these girls. So far, my daughter’s coaches have all been fantastic and if it’s too much for her, they back down a bit. The young women in all of these videos I’ve been watching are brave. It takes a lot to come out in front of the entire world to tell their horrific stories. I’m glad the monster who did this to them will never walk the same streets as us again and can no longer harm another child. That’s the only good that will come from this. Oh, and the fact that child molesters are the most hated amongst other prisoners. Since it’s a high profile case, he’ll most likely be put in solitary. But when he’s out, he’ll be wanting to sew up his own asshole and will be begging to go back to solitary. The other prisoners will certainly make him wish he were dead.

    Dominique Moceanu has spoken out about the treatment at the Ranch for YEARS and has since been shunned by the gymnastics community including by her former teammates who spoke out against HER. Perhaps if people had listened to Moceanu years ago, the Karolyis would not have been able to continue building a culture where someone like Nassar could be "successful." Everything that USAG does now from firing Nassar, to closing the Ranch, to putting new laws into place is too little WAY TOO LATE.

      Yes! There is obviously so much blame to be laid here, but where the heck were these kids PARENTS? I just don't get how this happened to SO many kids and none of their parents were tipped off or decided to do something about it?!? Even the phycological abuse alone should be enough to get parents involved in this madness! As a parent myself, I can't imagine the guilt I would live with if I had done nothing to protect my kids. It is the parents job before anyone else to look out for the well being of their kids!

    • @kellihullaby775
      @kellihullaby775 6 років тому +8

      And that is what I am saying. We should be having these conversations with our children. Some of the kids say their parent was in the room when some of this stuff happened.
      The kids were afraid to tell, they had high hopes of being successful so they didn't say anything, they didn't think anyone would believe them- whatever the reason I am definitely empathetic but I refuse to allow any excuses.

      After physical bullying I developed severe anger issues, for the next 3 years of my life I kept fighting against myself in my head that I was eating shit during meals. During every single second of those 3 years I also kept fighting against myself in my head that the bullies were sodomizing me and my family members. As a result I couldn't concentrate during exams and classes.
      I am still having self esteem issues 14 years on from the incident.
      I went to army and didn't do some admin work due to fighting myself in my head and army people thought I was lazy and thus bullied me as well.
      This is why I have zero sympathies and zero tolerance for bullies. I am 31 years old and don't even have a wife now, partly sabotaged due to bullying. Gymnastics is a REALLY messed up discipline to put your young girls into man. How do you think he was able to earn their trust in the first place? Because it's SUCH a brutal and harsh regimen. Every girl who does this has their height stunted by half a foot as a NORM. You have to put that in perspective. At least half of the trauma she's talking about, has nothing to do with Larry Nassar. In my opinion, putting your young girls into gymnastics is child abuse in and of itself.

    I come from India and the performance of my country in Olympics is very poor. I always felt bad about it and wondered how other countries - esp certain countries piled up medals. Now I know how they do it. Little children are picked and given rigourous training depriving them of normal happy childhood. Their lives are nothing but of competitions with harsh coaches guiding them. Gymnastics was my favourite sport. But I am shocked at how damaging it is to the body. I don't even know how parents can send their children away to different places around the world with random people who are their coaches and doctors. I don't know how parents can have their minors disrobe themselves in front of an adult male for an ankle sprain. World Renowned doctor? What was he renowned for in the beginning? As far as I know, his therapy was nothing but abuse. He made a career out of abuse. By looking at the timeline, I now think that he even chose the career so that he could abuse. He is the perfect criminal. He did his crime in front of everyone and didn't even get caught for it. Remember that he was first caught for child pornography. The whole episode has changed the way I look at gymnastics, Olympics and even sports. Eventually, only parents care for their kids and anything that involves being with 'outsiders' is hazardous. And hence sports is dangerous as it always involves vulnerable children spending most of their time with potential abusers.

Indian parents would never send you away like that or they let a male doctor touch you (with the parents not being around) near your vagina or your breasts even for the treatment because they know people are more than what they pretend to be. Americans put so much belief in their teachers,doctors, coaches etc thinking all of them follow protocols,morals and law.

      What I as a mother, am very shocked about, is how parents allow kids to practice and train in complete isolated places, where they are not allowed. Also, a Dr would need to explain to me previously, what kind of therapy he wants to do. If I do not understand it or see exactly where he is touching my kid, to make sure it's ok, I do not allow it. I know therapeutic massages, physiotherapy and other treatments, are common. But to put a towel on my daughter, and then have his hands on the pelvic area...? No way, I would supervise every move, as a mother. He treated girls at night, in their beds or his house. He manipulated them so well, they would not talk.

      Since these are public statements, these women finally have a national platform and forum to voice their concerns. Something they were denied while being abused. USAG and MSU are part of the reason Nassar was able to abuse 140+ girls over 20 years - they created a culture where they were unable to speak up. And now there are no forces coming after USAG and MSU like they have for Nassar, so hopefully if enough of these women speak to that maybe just maybe the right people will perk their ears up and listen.

      Your comment is years old, so excuse me for responding now, but you were not behind her 100%. Like so many others, you didn't listen to what she had to say. The overall abuse taking place at the ranch was integral to Larry's grooming of the gymnasts. She talked about that. Larry played the good guy who was there to support them through the tough treatment by the rest of the staff. She gives a more clear picture than most of the other victims by going into great detail about this aspect. It helps you see a big part of how Larry got away with it. Conditions on the ranch were awful for the gymnasts, so Larry acted like he was their friend, and took advantage of that dynamic. Other girls mentioned this, but few laid it out as clearly as Mattie. It is clear through her testimony here Larry knew all about the various abuses, and used it as a means to molest the gymnasts and commit his own abuses. I think everything she says is relevant to Nassar.

    Parents, HOW COULD YOU NOT RECOGNIZE the nightmare some of these kids were going through , they didn't even wanted to be there, they were afraid of their coaches too...for God's SAKE , this girls will need serious therapy to move on with their lives.

    This is heartbreaking. Of course the sexual abuse, but also the training methods, the pressure, the fear...who could live like this? Why? For what??? A child's well-being is more important than any medals, any sport...

  • @PeterSedesse

    No child should be pushed into anything that intense before they are 18, it is just crazy what these girls are told they should endure just to ' win' a game.

    I ALWAYS thought the Karolyi Ranch looked SUSPECT. I ALWAYS knew something wasn't quite right... grown men and little girls.... c'mon. Any dude who coaches girls anything... idgaf... they are not to be trusted. Facts.

      Well, I coached girls softball for about 30 years and never had an issue. I have even coached kids of some of my earlier players that requested their kids to be on my team. So, please don't say "any dude who coaches girls is not to be trusted". There are a few "bad apples" in every profession that make the rest of us look bad with comments like yours.

    • @thersten
      @thersten 6 років тому +5

      Don M it's still probably not a good idea to have men so close to little girls. because how will we ever know until it's too late? don't you think?

    • @donm4452
      @donm4452 6 років тому +4

      I never even thought that was an issue when I was coaching. I know when I started with my first team I was 23 and the girls were 8-10 year olds. Years later, I was talking to one of the mom's from that team and she confessed they asked the board why a single 23 year old guy was coaching their little girls and I had a lot of parents watching very closely. I always talked to the parents during the season so they got to know me while I coached their kids and those parents were very upset when I left that team to coach a travel team a couple years later. I know there are a few bad coaches that make it rough, but I assure you I am not one of them! I also always tried to make sure there were at least two adults present whenever a player was present (Boy Scouts call that "two deep leadership") so if a kid tried to imply anything happened, another adult was available to confirm it did not!

    USA is pretty famous for its justice and judging processes, infact a lot of people like Nassar get sentenced to life or for a lot of time, in case of different crimes. Italy is full of people like this all around, people who get sentenced but still survives justice. I guess justice isn't completely comprehended in Italy.
