  • Four years ago, Jordyn Wieber brought home a gold medal from the London Olympics as a member of the US Women’s Gymnastics team, famously known as the Fierce Five. Since London, Wieber has moved across the country, found a new gymnastics family, and dived into a new role in the gym. This makes me so sad for her. She must have regretting going pro so much. It's great that she is still such a part of the team, but I wish she could compete with them too.

      Yeah, I think that was a combination of her coaching skills and Olympic background and also her fame and a PR move on the part of Arkansas. But it is amazing that her hard work and skills met with good luck and produced that job opportunity.

    Knowing the heights she reached and the success she had in the sport, it is inspiring to watch her perform her duties as the UCLA team manager. One might think that schlepping crash pads, chalking bars, and even helping with hair and makeup is work not worthy of gold medalist, but she loves and respects the sport so much that she eats it up and appears to love every minute. She embodies the saying, "Do what you love and love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life," and I'm sure she'll be a success in whatever she does next.

    Jordyn Weiber was my favorite fierce five member. I always felt she was the most humble, genuine, and hard-working gymnast. My heart broke for her when she didn't make finals but I'm so glad she's happy. Can't wait to see her perform again, only wish she could compete again.

      Amen, I'm so sad to find out that she won't be competing anymore and has retired. I was so hoping she would try again for the all around. My heart broke for her when they excluded her from competing in the all around in 2012. That was so cruel in my book. So much unfairness starting last Olympics in terms of Women's Gymnastics. 3rd place should still make it to the finals in my book, don't give a fuck what the hell they say or their fucking new rules.She was not only the best but also the most graceful and beautiful out of all the fierce five. That was supposed to be her gold medal--not Gabby Douglas.

Gymnastics is life for me as well, and all of these wonderful gymnast, like Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, and all the rest really inspire me to be great at Gymnastics. total BS that she didn't compete because of a stupid rule. Jordyn Wieber did not get to compete in the all-around final at the 2012 London Olympics due to a rule that limited each country to only two competitors in that event, despite her high qualifying score.

    the '2 per country' rule still infuriates me to this day. it's the dumbest rule in sport - the top 24 all arounders should get to go to the all around, period. the inclusion of athletes who have no chance to get a medal makes no sense if they can't even qualify to be one of the top 24 or whatever the number is....... same as on event finals...... top 8 should qualify, period, even if it's 4 from usa and 4 from a different country. the best should be honored as such and these people have worked their entire lives for this one shot, and the sacrifice and money their parents put into it........

      You're talking like going to the olympics is the only reason why these athletes do the sport. If that's the case, that's their problem. No one should make their personal happiness dependent on a ticket to the olympics.
      I mean, some athletes I love and support very much just barely don't get to go to the olympics, even though they're better at their sport than the olympians from other nations. That's just the way things work. No point in getting infuriated over that.

    • @vanessae1270
      @vanessae1270 7 років тому +23

      Not sure how long you've been following gymnastics but let me give you the run down. The 2 per country rule was implemented after the Sydney 2000 olympics when Romania took all the medals in the AA competition Raaducan, Amanar, and Olaru. Not to mention back when Russia was the USSR and dominated the sport. This was back in the perfect 10 system. Fast forward to 2012. Yes Jordyn was the 2011 WC she shouldn't have expected it would be easy to get into the olympic AA with such strong competition from her teammates. My friends and I totally called this happening. Jordyn was solid but she never had one event where she really shined. Aly had weak bars but made up with beam and floor. Nastia/Shawn in 2008 Nastia had a low scoring vault but she made it up with scores that go over 16.3 on beam and bars and had high start value. People were only outraged because it was the WC but what if the situation was reversed what if it was Aly would missed out would media have been outrageous over a rule that has been in place for 11 years prior? Not to mention what about other gymnast who lucked out of the 2 per country rule? In Beijing Sacramone couldn't compete in beam and floor event finals because of the rule. Same with Russia Afanasyeva in Beijing she couldn't do beam in the event final in Beijing.

    • @ally4eva93
      @ally4eva93 7 років тому +9

      I understand both sides of this argument.
      When I was young and doing competitions for athletics I had to be in the top 8 to make it to a final.
      But I am from Australia where our gymnast are not as dominate in the sport and I would like to see people representing my country compete for the all around title even if we can't keep up with the Americans, Russians, and the Chinese.
      Honestly I feel that it should be the top 24 in scores and not 2 people per country. If we look at athletics they go on the fastest times so athletes from countries that are not so good are not getting their shot at Olympic gold.

    Didn't realize all that went into the political side of being a pro vs. an amateur. That is a ridiculous rule for the sport of gymnastics. What a tough decision Jordyn and lots of others have made. The NCAA needs to change something in regards to the olympics, especially when it comes to Gymnastics

    • @tosh4771
      @tosh4771 8 років тому +6

      It's not so much about the Olympics as much as she went pro by accepting endorsement deals. I hate this rule and even believe college players should get paid when you figure that college football is a billion dollar industry, college coaches make millions and can accept endorsement deals, but the players get "experience" that doesn't necessarily do them any good because they have no choice in the matter. What's funny is college players can essentially go pro in baseball (i.e. Russell Wilson, Brandon Weeden) and still play college football.

    • @DeannaHongProductions
      @DeannaHongProductions  8 років тому +12

      Yes, I have to reiterate that the NCAA does not have an issue with Olympians. There are many current NCAA athletes who have already competed in the Olympics, or will compete this year. While many of these athletes can continue their sport after they graduate from college, most gymnasts will not be able to because their bodies won't be able to put up with gymnastics for much longer. This is why Miss Val, Kyla, and Jordyn talk about the "small window of opportunity" for gymnasts in this video.

    • @TickleMeElmo55
      @TickleMeElmo55 8 років тому +1

      Athletic scholarships are their "payment." It's a sweet deal, really. Free tuition + books & fees + room & board. Plus, any money that would've been used for any of said expenses goes towards rent and food when they get an apartment after their freshmen yr.

    The NCAA is duplicitous when it comes to professional and amateur status. You can actually play college football while having been drafted by and playing minor league baseball. Drew Henson played football at the University of Michigan from 1998 to 2000 while having been drafted by the Yankees in 1998 and signed to a 17 million dollar contract.

    • @chrisackerson9525
      @chrisackerson9525 7 років тому +8

      +sienna three I actually believe that is against NCAA rules. Athletes are not allowed to make money off their 'likeness' or 'image' no matter if it's in the same, or a different sport. If they make money, in anyway, based upon their 'celebrity' (for lack of a better word) they are ineligible to compete. The NCAA would say the exposure you got from playing that sport helped you get that contract. So in your scenario the quarterback would be ineligible. That is how I understand the rules anyway.

    At least she is still able to use her professional gymnast / former olympian status to continue to earn money, such as this video being sponsored by Tumbl Trak, the tour, and speaking opportunities. I really commend her for prioritizing her education and college experience even if she can't compete on the team. It does seem strange, though. Imagine not being able to study acting or art or business in college because you had professional experience...being barred from college plays because you were on Broadway, etc. I know that sponsorships and money have a history of adding corruption to college sports, but there must be a better solution especially for gymnastics.

      Athletics and academics are two different things. In going "pro" you actively sign contracts to promote your sport; if you want to reach the pinnacle of a sport - like gymnastics - you don't have to go pro as seen with numerous Olympic gymnasts who competed on the collegiate level. Making a feature film, acting on Broadway, starting a business are different animals from which you're comparing. A more apt way to say it is if a gymnast enters the "elite" level and/or becomes an Olympian while retaining her amateur status and not being able to compete on the college level.
