I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! can confirm it's accurate. similar title was given to my daughter's assistance dog (also from the MIRA foundation): Ambassador of Cuteness. The fact that they breed their dogs and select them for both their attitude and their general physical health leads to quite beautiful animals. i half-jokingly say that biggest problem we have in public is people who want to pet the dog. can totally relate to Molly and Gallop here.

    Molly's french is very good, but pay attention is actually "Fais attention", directly translating to "Make attention" because the verb "payes" or "to pay" is only used in the literal context of money. I know no one asked and no one cares, but I find it interesting so maybe someone else will too.

    Video idea! As a PSA, you should do a video where you wear a gopro and film a day when you're out and about in public and show how many times people try to touch/distract Gallop. There's a video someone did where a female wore a camera and walked around a busy city and counted the number of times she was catcalled to show how scary/uncomfortable it can be to be a woman alone in public. This video could be similar where it shows how frustrating it can be to be an independent blind person in public. I think it would be a great visual to show those who are ignorant to guide dog 'etiquette' and may be helpful to both the blind and sighted communities! Just a thought. :)

    Man when you said that you use Gallop for physical security, that hit right in my soul. I have a 90+lb Malamute/Australian Shepherd/Husky dog, who looks practically like a wolf (No wolf in him, but he looks the part). He's a huge love bug but the main reason I got him is so I have a dog to take with me on my walks. Even as a sighted, 5'3" woman, I've been harassed and even stalked on my walks without my dog--especially in the nearby park I frequent. In fact I actually no longer go walking in the park without my dog--if he's on a play date or something, I only walk around my neighborhood. He actually knows when I'm feeling unsafe too, because he'll hug his body to me if I'm walking in an area I'm uncomfortable in.
    I'm glad that your big boy is able to spook off creepers: it sucks that this has to be a part of a woman/femme's life, though.

And when the local idiots come around,he’s always right there. He wraps hims body around my legs. If they come to close,he growls. The one and ONLY time Buddy growls lol. He’s a lazy old man😂

      Exactly! They could hurt the person and the animal. If someone distracts Gallop while Molly's trying to cross the road, he could not notice a car and both of them could be killed. Service dogs (normally) get so much love and affection when they aren't working, we don't need to give it to them while they are working.

      Curlsunleashed I do not know a lot, but here some tips:
      - A dog with bad behaviours is less likely to be a service dog.
      - As far as I know, no service dog in Canada and the United States requires a vest, do a dog with a vest is less likely to be a service dog.
      - Service dogs are highly trained. A dog with high obedience are more likely to be service dogs.
      - Some service dogs, like the ones for blind people, have a specific harness. The metal handle is, as far as I know, standard here for blind guiding dogs.
      Edit: as others said in this thread, real legitimate service dog vests are more common than I was lead to believe. My knowledge was flawed. The vest is no indicator of true or fake service dog.

    • @thalia9808
      @thalia9808 5 років тому +86

      just because a service dog is wearing a vest does NOT mean it is fake, i have a service dog and i can say that if she did not have a vest that says "service dog, do not pet" MANY people would come up to her daily and try to pet her, without the vest many people don't realize she's a working a dog and try to pet her and distract her. they do that with the vest sometimes but all i have to do is point at her vest and say "please don't distract my dog, she's working." and most of the time they're respectful. while vests are not required in the united states, they're appreciated because without them people can argue saying they didn't know they weren't suppose to pet the dog

    • @ghyslainabel
      @ghyslainabel 5 років тому +33

      @@thalia9808, thank you for the clarification. I mentioned the vest because some websites sell "service dog" vests to anyone so they can bring their pets everywhere. Some blind people said in videos that they were pissed about those vests that help to pass pets as service dogs.
      Like I said, they are not hard facts, only signs to help figuring out if a dog is a service dog or a pet.

    • @thalia9808
      @thalia9808 5 років тому +16

      Ghyslain Abel of course, i just am helping clarify that not all service dogs don't wear vests, most do. but from the other stuff you were saying is a good way to detect a fake service dog. they'll bark, be impatient, come up to you sniffing you, or be a puppy (service dog training takes a long time and puppys/newborns can not be service dogs until they're older yet people still take their puppies with them to stores and everywhere)

    • @ghyslainabel
      @ghyslainabel 5 років тому +6

      @@thalia9808, I am surprised that most service dogs have a vest, but since I only have anecdotal evidences, I will take your word on that. The only picture I saw of a service dog with a vest is a pair of customs dogs www.demotivation.us/customs-1275978.html .
      Of course, the proportion of service dogs with a vest probably changes from country to country.

    I hope I can explain myself: you've travelled abroad quite a few times with your guide dog. Has Gallop ever had problems adjusting to traffic coming from the 'wrong' side of the road or stuff like that?. I have 0 sense of direction and my sister is the opposite, but there have been times when she's had trouble getting around, finding which direction the address we were looking for was or interpreting different road signs or etiquette when it comes to cars letting you cross before they do., etc.
    And what about jet lag?

    In my opinion its really weird that people ask to pet your dog or pet your dog even without asking especially a guide/service dog. I live in Belgium and the only times someone asked to pet my dog is if they also have a dog and the dogs are both interacting with each other. It has never happened that a random stranger would ask to pet my dog, which is great since she is afraid of strangers (we adopted her and she was abused before). Drivers should be paying attention. Most electric cars have a camera in the back so the driver really shouldn't have a blind spot. Even loud cars could be a problem since blind people don't know where they are coming from or where they're going, that's why every cross walk should have a beeping thing when the pedestrian can walk. Cars aren't the problem, maybe pollution wise they are but other than that it's always the drivers responsibility.

    I've seen other service dogs with a vest that says Service dog: Please don't pet" or something similar that makes it very obvious to people to not engage. I wonder if there's a reason Molly doesn't use one? I feel that some people may not realize he is a service dog with the harness alone. I know I probably wouldn't immediately assume he was from the walking harness since I haven't seen service dogs with just that before.

    • @hopewelch3307
      @hopewelch3307 5 років тому +4

    • @islajamieson-mackenzie3259
      @islajamieson-mackenzie3259 5 років тому +13

      Some schools provide a specific harness which the dog has been trained in and been used to - the dog has to recognise the feel of the harness going on in order to know when it is “on duty” so it may not be possible or permitted by the school for Molly to replace the harness. It may also be a harness which she likes the feel of which is important since she has to hold it for a long time every day and she is far more in touch with her sense of touch than other people.

    Hey Molly, I have a tough question! I recently saw a guide dog user walking with his dog on an insanely hot day it was probably 37° C and the sun was just beating down. The owner was trying to give commands to the dog and you could visibly see the dog was panting and struggling in the heat even to the point of seeming confused and not walking straight. I really wanted to stop and offer him water and suggest he let the dog sit in the shade for a moment. I decided against it as I was a tourist who didn’t speak the language (French) and didn’t want to risk offending the man especially since I was alone. I’d also assumed the man would’ve been able to sense the dog struggling too? Can you tell me what you think of this situation? My heart just broke seeing the dog struggle in the heat.

      Guide dogs in the uk are all trained by one uk wide charity which provides all the dogs with matching training vests and harnesses - in different countries because they are bigger there are multiple organisations that train guide dogs and they provide different harnesses and harnesses can also be purchased, but because they are all different there is not one universally recognisable harness that all guide dogs have in that country. Unfortunately because of the multiple harness styles and colours and the availability of them for family dogs who are not working, they have become less effective in making service dogs recognisable outside the uk.

My pup was raised with ducks. But yeah different schools different rules. You do have to watch out that your dog does not pick up bad habits from other animals. I dont want to ask something more of a dog than they would be able to provide but I love the idea of being able to go on walks on my own (with a dog maybe) and be free. I mean sometimes I'll watch your videos that don't have Gallop in them, but I'm usually here for Gallop. He's just so cute, and I like him.
    No offense to you, Molly.
    I feel like if I ever dated a blind woman, I would get along with her dog. It is definitely something that would make the dating dynamic different, but it's not something that would stop me from dating her. After all, I like dogs and am a dog person. I feel like animals have a real calming effect on people, which for me is a good thing. It's one of the reasons why I've always owned a pet, usually a dog.

    Why doesnt Gallop wear a harness on which it clearly says 'Guide Dog'?. I am from the Netherlands and here actually all guide dogs for blind people have the words 'guide dog' on their harness clearly written, I think it is madeel by the organization that also trains most guide dogs. And basically everyone would recognize these harnasses and know that they're real and that are of course really needing him (even if you wouldn't 'look' particularly blind). I was actually a bit surprised that your guide dog doesn't have a clear sign on him making it clear he's a guide dog. Anyways, love your videos! greetings from NL

But some people sometimes need the toilet «now», and then you use what you need, instead of standing in line and end up needing new clothes. So I hope that people sometimes can just remeber that some people have invisible things going on that make them need that special toilet

    We definitely do have some weirdos in the community, especially in my section of it. Half of them don’t want to do anything with their lives except for complain, and ruin the fun for everybody else. And then the other half is split between people like you and me who like to educate, and pure laziness. I have gotten into my own blind friend group on UA-cam that I would really like you to check out we do mostly flight simming but we also play some other video games as well and I think you might find it interesting and we would love to have you onboard

      @@MollyBurkeOfficial Just finished it and it was a great video! Makes me wonder if you purposefully avoid dating guys who have pets.
