Whipped Cream And Other Delights Album Review for the vinyl community

  • I put the question out "What album do you want me to review in a full video?" The most popular answer, by far, was Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream & Other Delights. So here it is! The 1965 album that everyone already owns in a review. But, why is this album so popular in dollar bins and yard sales? Why did so many people buy it, to only discard it later? I have theories... This video has an exceptionally long into, the review starts after 2 minute mark.

My wife came in to me watching a grown man covered in whipped cream talking about vinyl … She looked at me funny...
She think my vinyl obsession is getting out of hand!!
I'm new to this community but I'm loving it thus far.

This was definitely bachelor-pad music back in the day. "Surfin' with the Astronauts" was another one. Both not bad albums. Trivia: The song Whipped Cream was used as part of the music for the ABC television show The Dating Game.
Funny review! I can't wait to see you tackle The Ohio Players - Honey album.

Loved this one! You are soooo right, this album is EVERYWHERE. I saw at least 6 of them in one record store going through their $1 bins, so I thought "ok, why not" I mean there were at least 6, so it must be a sign, right? So yes, I have one now. I've seen a few of your vids and honestly, anyone who covers himself in whipped cream for a video deserves my subscription :)

I wanted to add a story about the quirky phenomenon that records like this end up in collections even if we don’t buy them, they just somehow magically appear. It’s like a Carpenters or John Denver album that won’t go away it just keeps popping up. They have a way of hiding you know…
A friend of mine had a big antique store that even have a vinyl record department. She would buy storage locker units and go to Auctions and buy a few dozen boxes of LPs. She would cherry pick for the ones that were a value and put them in the store for sale But then she would be left with thousands of LPs that she didn’t want and most of them had no value. After a few years of filling up her own storage unit with stuff she didn’t want to keep, she had me run a big weekend yard sale for her in a college town near Portland.
During the weekend only about 50 LPs have been sold. There were literally 6000 records left over by Sunday afternoon. I was about to start loading the boxes of LPs into a truck to take to you a thrift store. These three college guys pulled up in a pick up truck. One of them said “we’re thinking of doing our own pirate radio station and we need some old records, can you make us a deal?”
I told him I could go as low as $2.
He replied “two dollars each? Can you do a little better than that?“
I replied “oh yes I can do much better than that. It’s two dollars for all of them, but you have to take every single box, that’s the deal.” They cheered and did high-fives and then began what took them an hour and a few trips with their truck to get them all moved out of there. I was thought that was the deal of the century for me in record selling. Think about it, I would’ve spent much more than two dollars in gas just to take those LPs to the thrift store and they might not have wanted all of them. Not to mention, I would’ve been headed for the chiropractor after that much work.

Thanks for the great review, I especially like your comment that it is “bump and grind music but really just bump music without the grind.“ Seriously considering that as my epitaph…
Thank you for mentioning the dating game and two Herb Alpert songs used on the show, not to name drop or anything but… OK, I knew Jim Lang, the host of the dating game show, he lived in a small town north of San Francisco, really cool guy used to see him at the flea market digging through record bins probably hoping to find another copy of whipped cream and other delights. In that same town there were lots of music related celebrities that live there including Dan Hicks, Maria Muldaur, members of the Jefferson airplane, members of the Grateful Dead, and the late great hipster DJ Al Jazzbo Collins.
You are certainly a brave person to re-create the whipped cream pose and fashion statement on live UA-cam that’s pretty impressive and I think it’s cool that you used actual whip cream since the original album cover photo shoot was done with shaving cream, they say that the only actual whipped cream was on the models finger.
I think I’ve collected every single parity LP cover, and treasure them, wanted to clarify something for many who may not know it, the basic reason that we keep seeing this particular record album at every yard sale, every thrift store and yes in every dumpster or free box at a large record store, is that this LP was a multi million seller. Of course the biggest sellers end up in a great quantity many decades later at the thrift stores. I even find them sealed and in pristine condition but they’re still not really worth more than about eight dollars after you pay for shipping and professional record box shipping materials.
Thanks for informing others that this was Herb Alpert on trumpets and the rest is the wrecking crew. At this point Julius walked her and other members of the Tijuana brass had moved on to form the sort of parity group called the Baja marimba band. Also produced and issued on A&M records.
Anyone interested can learn a lot more about the history of Herb Alpert and the TJB On Wikipedia and other sites. Interesting to note that no one in the original band was from Mexico and certainly not from Tijuana. As I recall Herb tales of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean descent.
In my final comment which I hate to be nitpicky but with all due respect to herbs legendary band and two the fourth largest city in Mexico, it would be nice if people would start pronouncing Juana correctly.
Iris not Tiajuana, it is Tijuana. Tee/eanna. I realize that people have been saying that their whole life the wrong way it’s hard to correct that.
Thanks again for your great video, always a cool thing for someone to review and celebrate a record that literally came out over five decades ago. I probably on 25 copies of this vinyl LP as well I have it on cassette, eight track, reel to reel and CD. I’m still looking for more for impressing us of it I understand there was a Chinese pressing, German, Greek and other languages with the same artwork but the foreign title spelling

I must admit Whipped Cream & Other Delights is a guilty pleasure of mine (along with Going Places). Several cuts off those albums were used on British TV and Radio shows during my childhood, so it’s largely sentimental. I agree Let it Bleed is top 5 - it might even be the best album ever made BUT it never fails to irritate me that Honkey Tonk Women and Midnight Rambler (live version from Get Yer Ya-Ya’s out!) are vastly superior to the album versions. Great video by the way 😂

Yeah, this record definitely belongs to 007 hangin' at a tiki bar in the Dominican Republic but without the 007 credentials. In fact, he is probably hangin' with Dr. No's henchmen thinking that they are cool because of the female attention they are getting. Somewhere in the background this record is playing (yes, probably on a record changer). Again, great content and cheers!

Look some of us were just kids in the sixties. I was born in 1960. As a figure skater and gymnast I ended up doing a whole routine at 7 yrs old in white with pink sequins and Pom poms swirling in a big group at the community centre. In the next couple of years, in gymnastics my friends floor music was Taste of Honey, and mine was Thank Heaven for Little Girls from Gigi. So depending on your childhood exposure or adolescence, a big audience was under 18 and mostly aware it was “ sexy” . I found this embarrassing to contemplate at 7, but I liked the short skirt with the sequins and the Kleenex Pom Pom hat.

Yup Robert, like you I picked up all my Herb Alpert & TB records from Goodwill Stores and bargain bins in used record shops. But that's because I first heard them from borrowed library records - liked them, taped them, and decided I wanted vinyl copies of my own. As you mentioned, "Spanish Flea" (from the Going Places album) was popularized by the "Dating Game" and "Casino Royale" (from the Sounds Like album) was the theme song from the original "Casino Royale" James Bond movie. And of course, there's Herb Alpert himself singing "This Guy's In Love With You" (from the Beat of the Brass album) which was a #1 song in 1968.

You had to live through the Sixties to realize how successful Herb's TJB was. The mariachi style in pop music was novel for the time and was very catchy that appealed to teens and adults alike. The provocative album jacket was a definite eye catcher. Whipped Cream was TJB's fourth and biggest selling lp -- over 6 million sold. It contains two popular Hot 100 hits -- Whipped Cream and A Taste of Honey, (which was paired with Third Man Theme in late 65).

Swear these were a dime a dozen until they all got snatched up. Or maybe its just location. I remember scoring his first 4 A&M albums in mint shape for a buck each a long time ago, but gave away 2 Herb box sets to friends. I used a UK London album of his to look at that last big eclipse that went across the states, but it was because it was see through brown. I think i had 6 Whipped Creams at one point. Like when does it end. I remember once seeing it on a reel to reel for 50 bucks and was like, oh, why do i want that. Theres blue and red Quality Records pressings here in Canada.
