Pius wasn't a hypocrite. At least he didn't speak out but do nothing. Whatever he said or didn't say, he was actually one of the most effective agents for saving Jews in the war.

It seems normal that Pious 12th knew about the holocaust. He apparently knew about the danger many German Catholics faced. Many seem to have joined the jews in the death camps. Certainly, Pious 12th also helped many Jews in Rome during the 2nd World War. I'm certain the holy father did what he could. ❤

Israel Zolli, the head Rabbi of Rome at the time, converted to Catholicism in no small measure due to Pious XII's hiding Italy's Jews in seminaries & convents. Israel named a forest after Pious XII in gratitude to the Holy Father's defense of Jews during the Nazi reign.

I think the Catholic Church needs to stop feeling that every pope needs to be made a saint. I suspect political and administrative skills are the factors that make one a bishop and cardinal.

Is it known that Pious the 12th saw the letter? Who was the first international leader to criticize the Nazis? Were Jewish people hidden in the Vatican during the second war? What happened to the Jewish people in the Netherlands after the bishops criticized the Nazis? Did the informant as Pius to not speak out? What happened after Pius the 11th sent an encyclical to Germany?

The letter requested the information be confidential as it would have cost the lives of those in Germany who had gathered the information. The Vatican passed information to the Aliies via the US and British ambassadors to the Holy See who were in Rome throught the war. The Vatican was neutral. I know of Eastern rite priest who was also an officer in the Italian Army. He was given secret instructions to travel in the East gathering information. Because of his status as an Italian officer he was able to travel there. All information was passed to the Allies. As is widely know they knew about the death camps and could have bombed the railways and the camps but it was thought it would not have stopped the mass murder. Not only did all churches in Rome give their church plate (chalice and pattens) to be melted and paid to save the Jews in Rome many thousands were hidden inside monasteries and convents.

John you know I have great affection for you and while noble and game of you to support Vatican efforts in resolving various aspects of the troubles in Ukraine - always trying to say something good - I do feel that in garnering points as a good Catholic, you are losing twice as many against the account marked "good journalism".
Indeed, some of the signs you refer to are not discouraging - as you said, a high ranking Vatican prelate having a conflab with a CCP mandarin is indeed a unique historic occurrence - furthermore, if Zuppe's presence there has acted in some small way as the grain of sand inside the Kremlin's shell - and created at Moscow a sensation of a combination of jealousy and curiosity such that the cardinal's return to Moscow may produce some talks - well great. But for you to be reading clear, letters and symbols in the smoke of what, at the moment, is merely a bonfire, is stretching "seeing things positively" frankly to beyond its breaking point. I'm not even sure you believed it very enthusiastically and that's a pity as I once read you make Vatican cardinals fuming, as they can never work out what you think. OK, it would be surprising if you didn't make some expression of your personal wish to see some crumbs of success - even just a minor grain deal concession. But I can read you like a textbook - you there in Rome all the way from here in London: you're already conflating the most tenuous possible current events with several major future breakthroughs, driving your wagons hard through the thorn thickets and other scrub. You frequently advise how long things take to happen at the Vatican, so why not take your own usually excellent advice, cool your jets and hold off a bit with already sending out the invites to the party. Believe me, everyone understands the Pope wants to do anything he can - but until he can swap out the white soutane for camo and go serve at the front line - it may be better for the Pope and his staff to keep their own counsel 🫤 We all know the Pope would like nothing more than to see the cessation of the appalling losses - but everyone already knows how that can be achieved John - there is no mystery here, no complication, no deep seated difficulties, no nuances or even questions of simple logistics. All that needs to happen is for President Puta to give the orders to his Army chiefs to withdraw back to behind Russian legal borders. FYI laws passed unilaterally by Puta, don't count. I'm referring to well defined borders with which most are familiar and comfortable.
Would the Pope have wanted his chief of staff "to sit down and have a nice chat with Göring"?
There are just times when you have to choose and of course I think the notion that the Vatican COULD play a role, but I'm certain on this occasion its well meaning presence is not really being felt by the party which really matters.
Staying silent and trying to meditate will place His Holiness in history like Chamberlain going to Germany to treat Hitler. Well intentioned, but will appear weak and venal to most. The Pope and his team should, even in moderate, diplomatic terms, l nevertheless be unequivocal that Puta is wrong, should desist forthwith and withdraw. Any meetings or negotiations should be about how many hundreds of billions of dollars war reparations Russia will be paying over to Ukraine - and who will run the country when Puta hands himself to the ICJ to await answering the many many war crimes charges levelled again him.
When did the Pope get so fretful and pusillanimous?

Could the Holy Father have done better to prevent the Holocaust? Like “actively” confronting Adolf about the cruel unwarranted murder of Jews? What if?

  • @John-el5jv

The letter specifically speaks of "Poles and Jews" being killed. Critics of Pius conclude, based on this evidence, that Pius disregarded Jewish lives; but they have nothing to say -- they don't care about -- the "Poles" who were likewise being killed.
But it follows that if the letter proves that Pius disregarded or minimized the loss of Jewish lives, then he must have likewise disregarded or minimized the loss of **Catholic** lives. But does anyone really believe this? Of course not. Rather, the Pope's critics simply ignore the absurd implications of their argument in their rush to impose a tendentious reading of the evidence that disparages the Pope to the maximum extent possible.

I wonder why you have not covered why Pope Francis has not traveled to the country of his birth since becoming Pope. You play favorites and would rather attack Pope Pius than address Pope Francis lack of pastoral concern for Argentina. Just an observation.

If we take another look at this period of time we now know more about what really went on in Eastern Europe and Russia since the collapse of the iron current. Do some real scholarship. Even Wikipedia admits 32 million Christians died in the 70 years of atheist communism. Christians scholars double this number to 60 million or 30% of the population of Russia alone. Under Nazis Germany 14 million Roman Catholic Polish people died in force labor or consentration camps per the Nuremberg trials . In the first three days after the Nazi invaded Hungary and Chekoslavakia , they rounded up and executed all of the Roman Catholic clergy. This is one of the reasons the Vatican was silent as the Nazis murdered all religious opposition. Pope JPIi studied underground to become a priest. We need more scholarship on the persecution of Christians during atheist communism and Nazism as both ideologies are Antichrist.
History is repeating itself again. Please report on the slaughter of Christians during this period of time. The numbers are staggering, and yes dwarf the Jewish only 3 to 6 million who died. Hopefully some honest scholarship will emerge.
