  • Living in a van at poverty level on social security is doable. How do you make it work for you. It's not about you should have saved your money. Catastrophic illness natural disasters etc can take everything you have. How do you start again in your 60's or 70's. This is a possible alternative until you get back on your feet. Before you judge walk in their shoes. Everyone is different our solutions are different and lifestyle. what is right for me may not be for you. But poverty is real for most seniors. people don't like to acknowledging it.

Lindy, I’m 60, fortunate enough to still have a good job, but likely won’t retire for 10 years because I can’t afford to. However rent keeps going up ($200 a month this year to $1500 a month and that’s cheap in my area). I’m from pioneer stock (read: used to hardship) and have almost decided that van life has to be better than forking over $1500 a month to someone who already has plenty. Thank you for your real-van-life videos. You are an inspiration!

Van life Prius V camping is my preferred method if I'm forced into the life.
5+ years ago bought property in a small town. $12K is a small price to pay for the peace of mind of owning. Just simplifies everything not having to be concerned about loosing my way if a breakdown occurred.
I know how to climb a tree and tie a hammock. Just couldn't see me paying extortion money like that. The market is going to correct soon and they're going to have to lower prices.

Lindy, you may not have money, but don't ever let anyone tell you that you're poor. Nobody who spreads as much hope as you can be considered poor. I am truly sorry this world is so unbalanced that you have to make these kinds of sacrifices just to survive. But I know many who are unemployed and are also just trying to figure out how to survive. Some can't even afford their own van and are paying a criminal element to rent a broken down vehicle that has been towed to a location and abandoned on the street. Your perseverance and determination are a source of inspiration to thousands.

I have been entertaining the idea of saving and getting a decent used van to live in. I too would love to travel.
I just ran across your channel and I just have to tell you that you are such an incredible lady and are truly an inspiration to me!
I love that you are so independent and thrifty with everything you do!!
I've been looking for cheaper ways to cook meals and such, as I am living in a camper right now, but you really can't travel like I want to with a camper. I like the "Van Life" idea bc you can basically park anywhere and sleep, eat, etc and don't have to pay campground fees, etc.
I watch a lot of minimalist videos and diy projects for ideas on saving money and all.
This is only my second video of yours, but you have definitely earned a new subscriber!!
I'm so glad I found you!! I'm learning a lot from you so far! Thank you for being you and so down to earth and such a wonderful person!! 😘🙏🏽

Well Lindy another great video. I would like to thank you for you being transparent with your viewers. Love the honesty. Oh and thanks for not playing a bunch of crap music . I enjoy being able to listen to you talk. I'm 67 years old and have been planning this life style since 1987. Now I'm retired and I am putting my van together to be able to just wonder around somewhere. I am Male and I'm sure people would think why is this guy hanging out on female videos. So here is the answer. I have for the last couple years been checking every video I can find on this life style. Just being straight up and honest, women are more innovative living in small spaces than males are. They are more efficient as well. So here I am, keep the vids coming you are doing great. Yes I have learned from you. Thank you.

Hi Lindy, I am 62. I made a mistake when I applied for widows benefits a couple years ago. I didn't pay attention to the earnings limit and now I'm paying back an overpayment of 16000.00 and also had to cut my hours of work down drastically to prevent more overpayment for this year. My daughter is helping me a little or I wouldn't be able to make it. Living in a camper or van sure seems logical, for cutting cost.

San Tan solar here in AZ...I purchased a kit that included 2 250W panels, mppt controller, wires, mounts, fuses, etc and installed it myself. Basically everything but batteries for 221.00. Do they have more of those kits ?? Dunno, but I will say that I went there in person so no shipping. Currently using two flooded batteries, had this system for two years and it has preformed flawlessly. Running my 12V fridge, diesel heater, lights, etc. I could only be happier, if I was gifted two 300Ah 12V lithium iron phosphate batteries... Yes I will eventually upgrade...San Tan Solar...Woo Hoo

You need a roof fan to take the hot air out but I'm sure you know that, but it seems you have everything you need you fit a lot in the Van. I'd have to park in the shade and keep reflectics on all the windows keep everything closed except for a roof fan to suck hot air out then with the artic air should stay cooler. I have premium u tube i know it doesn't pay as much. I'd have to have enough solar to run a stand up AC or a regular generator i don't know how you do it. I do have a generator it's not real loud. You're a very stronger woman than me. Adorable pup i have 2 dogs one i rescued couple months ago the other one I've had 4 years someone dumped him in my yard where me and my daughter had rented land cheap to park our campers it was real close to Myrtle Beach a place called Long's SC like 8 miles from little river SC. Safe travels.

I'm thinking you're hauling a lot of needless weight in hardwood and glass, but you do you! BTW, those Artic Coolers only help in climates without humidity. If you're in the south, not a wise investment, do yourself a favor and buy a $5 USB fan and get pretty much the same effect southerners.

The way I'm staying cool is making my space small and this way I can keep 68° no matter how hot Louisiana gets. I literally have to bundle up under a good blanket.
I'm grid tied this is the best way to do summer. Just a window unit on a 4*8*3.5 box AKA runaway camper. 305 kWh last bill. That's with a few appliances, lights, internet,tv,bose sound. I have to lay down most the time well after major back surgery and knee surgery, and requiring hip replacement I just stay in bed most of the time. When I do sit out I have 2 fans keeping me cool.
In the event of a Power outage I have 2 solar generators that I can run two fans with. In my runaway camper it's got screen I can survive an outage. I have 10*10 canopy I can employ to increase shade. I have an incredible little device that uses 35 watts it can keep a beverage ice cold. When you deal with an outage it is a forced off grid zone of time. You have to be wise and know how to remove heat from your body. First you want to prevent introducing heat.

What I don't like about buying ice at the store is the bag is dripping by the time you get it to van! What, is it only barely frozen? I wish they would find a way to sell small chunks of ice that are enclosed in leak proof container. It would last longer and the ice wouldn't leak all over everything. Like quart size ice chunks and you get 4 in a bag. And then when it's all melted you can use the water to do dishes or a bird 🛁 or to drink

Thank you. You are so practical. If you are ever in WA up by MT Baker, we have an orchard you can park in a while. God Bless.

Have you seen the medium size fans that run on batteries. You can buy rechargeable batteries for them and that would help.

I'm 74 and need out of this mh. I haven't had water in 5 yrs, now HVAC is out and no running car. I'm looking for a suv but would love to have a van. What kind do you have? It looks long. There's one at a used car dealership that has a really long one but kinda scared of one that long. I just received ny 600 watt bluetti and a solar panel. Haven't even had a chance to look at it. It's sooooo hot here and I have no idea where I could go to get cooler. I'm on SS and in poverty level so can't buy a lot right now but hopefully later. Anyone, please share your ideas. Ty 🙏🙏✝️
Have a great Independence Day. Was my mom's b'day and she would have been 104..😢🙏🙏

Lindy, have you thought about applying for Senior housing, it may take some time to get an apartment but it would be based on your income. I have to say that you are an amazing woman, I could never imagine living in a van. I give you a lot of credit. I'm a new subscriber and will be following your journey. 🙏

I applied and there is about a year and a half wait list. But it's a tall at building. Little square apt and windows don't open. I'm going to leave my name on incase I don't get the van put together.

You need multiple temperature sources. You should have inside and out temperature so you know what you need to do. 103 is one hell of a temperature. Need to avoid direct sun in that type of heat.

Lindy, I’m 63 live in northern NY would you consider going north in the summer and south in the winter? I like watching your informative vanlife. Prayers to you for all this heat you deal with. Jesus loves you ❤

Yes stay out of extreme Cold or heat. It cost more to heat a home than to remove heat. People in AZ will find temperature desired by elevation. Some have illness that forbid higher altitudes. You do want to pay close attention to the weather, have plans for covering for your vehicle should you get hail or tornado potential.I want NOTHING to do with tornado. I'll drive 100 miles to get to a safer place.
