I have a similar engine for irrigatining my rice field. Sometimes I have to turn the crank handle so fast that i am on the brink of collapsing......and then the contraption starts. If not I also have to get new water to prime the pump. But believe me, the joy of watching the pump finally working is woth it.
A lesson in humility for all of us who take our water supply for granted, and a beautifully produced video by someone who understands how to tell a story in pictures. Thank you.

These people absolutely amaze me at what they do with so little. I have a Petter AC1 diesel and I get wound up if the glow coil and electric start doesn't fire it off in more than 6 - 8 revolutions. :P But to be fair, yes I have shoved a propane blowtorch down a old diesels throat to get it to start on a cold day a few times so I can respect the flaming stick approach. :).
that water line going to the engine is to cool it as water from the pump is pressurized and pumped out around the engine cylinder in the water jacket. Very satisfying feeling to see all that water just coming out. definitely a magical moment.
I sat here in my heated and air conditioned home and watched these men and I thanked God for my really cushy retirement. When he pulled that injector I thought, "What?'. Injector work without a sterile environment and latex gloves?" We could use these men as teachers in our schools to teach our kids to use their brains.
This engine's injector is probably veery hard to clog. It would most likely run on vegetable oil too. xD Got One old german truck at home, you can fill the engine with rape oil and it works (and smells like pommes)

Engine like that was a must-have when the harvesting season came around and when you needed to get the grain out of the straw Such engines are used to this day as a reminder of how it was back in the day and the struggles
Who would of thought back from the 1800s that these old motors and pumps would be making life livable for people this far into the future? Still a lot of work yet easier than without these old beauties.

Glad to see someone who uses a Crescent wrench correctly. If you only have one wrench, learn how to avoid wallowing-out the jaw and rounding nuts with it. Guess what wrench Lindberg had on his plane... Also, would appreciate the camerawork done w/a monopod or something to reduce the motion. Gives some of us vertigo effects. Now that the water is flowing would be a good time to refill those water pots so that next time, the old guy doesn't have to walk miles to get water and miles to carry it back. Just a little effort savings suggestion.

Before you stop the pump when finished have some containers and fill them so you have water to prime the pump at the next start, that will save time and carrying water.
If this style of pump needs water for lubrication, it would have to be primed before starting, otherwise you could seize the bearings in the water pump. If not, you still have to remove the air from around the pumps impeller, otherwise it will be air bound and not pump water. Priming it prior to starting it accomplishes this. That said, I know I take for granted how easy it is to access clean water by just turning a knob. These gentlemen have to work hard for it.
These folks may look primitive and not modern, I have seen some what similar situations of Vietnamese grinding valve seats before getting an engine to run, (52 years ago) to pump water out of a river to irrigate a rice field, folks like these have mechanical skills, like it or not. Tough way to make a living.

Diesel injectors aren't serviced in a " sterile environment" it just has to be clean. This guy didn't strip the injector he only took it out.
