4 Levels of Deviled Eggs: Amateur to Food Scientist | Epicurious
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лис 2023
- We challenged chefs of three different skill levels - amateur Desi, home cook Emily, and professional chef Joshua Resnick from the Institute of Culinary Education - to make us their take on deviled eggs. Once each level of chef had presented their creations, we asked expert food scientist Rose to explain the choices each made along the way. Which deviled eggs would you swipe from the appetizer tray first?
Check out professional Chef Joshua's recipe here: www.ice.edu/blog/harissa-spic...

"I barely make my own bed, so I'm not gonna make my own Creole"
- Desi, level one chef, 2023 - 4:07
🤣🤣🤣
Based af
Desi has that "I'm gonna be a level one chef for the rest of my life, and I don't care" vibe to him, and I love it...
less dishes for Desi
@@PrivilegeYT less screen time too. Why would anyone want to see how NOT to cook something?
Desi's gonna give someone diarrhea with that cross contamination and licking the fork and sticking it back in the bowl. 🤢
@@bobbifergus3110 He's making it for himself? I lick stuff all the time when I'm cooking for myself. I think everyone does lmao.
I will take anything with bacon 🥓 on it.
EMILY!!!!! YOU'RE A LEVEL 2 CHEFF CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Not sure when but there's a few videos back where she had a whole graduation pretty much, they gave her a certificate and everything.
She's been a for a little a while now.
her first as level 2 was 4 Levels of Boneless Wings
The best character development ever
Why is level 2 the best in like 95% of these videos lol
it makes me so happy to see that emily's leveled up, you go ketchup girl!
Next step is to send Emily to culinary school and watch the student become the master
Ketchup Queen now
whats the lore here?
Same! She's a sweetheart!
@@DanielDorantes008now that’s coming of age
I still think it would be cooler if all three of them tried eachothers food so we get different perspectives on everyone's tastes.
Not if Desi keeps licking his fork
Theyve done that at least once that I've seen. Maybe it was pre pandemic though. I agree it should be a regular part of the show.
People say that on every thread, but that’s a bad idea! Think about it, Level One will like everybody’s food. Level Two will only like Level Three’s food. Level Three will hate everyone’s food! It would end in hurt feelings. This way, they only eat their own dishes and are
happy!!
@@Heartwing37 I don’t think so. Sure, Desi will like them all. So will Emily because they aren’t putting snobs with such refined palates on here that they can’t enjoy the basics most grew up with (they’ve just found more than one way to devil an egg, that’s all)… the pro will obviously know everyone starts hungry and makes things catering to what they know and the taste that they love, and all three versions would be, so long as Desi doesn’t contaminate the filling putting the fork back in after tasting for sharing, enjoyed by them all. The pro can give some simple “let’s get your eggs a little more stable so you don’t lose any albumin shot glasses” tips and tell him a simple way or two that won’t take more effort but can elevate the taste… but no one I’ve met who can eat eggs at all doesn’t like em deviled though I’m sure some “hot eggs only” people exist out there (I do pity those with allergies! Deviled eggs were something I ate a couple dozen halves of every holiday as a kid; that and stuffed mushrooms my family made were my protein more than the actual main dish though I enjoyed the ham, too, just in far smaller portions since it was salty and I’d already eaten a thousand calories by the time the bird and pig were ready lol).
As a Level 1 chef myself, I appreciate how Epicurious makes cooking seem approachable by not only including a Level 1 chef into things like this, but also for making decisions like promoting Emily to Level 2. I like seeing someone whose cooking skills I think I could match (or beat) making things that are a bit fancier than what I've dared to try - it encourages me to expand my cooking horizons.
With Desi around, everyone is a level 2.
You know what would be cool to see... a re-visit to older recipes to see how different cooks/chefs make things differently. An example: A Re-visit to French Toast to see how Level 2 Emily does.
THIS PLEASE!
She did that with her burger on her own channel
This is the content we want!
Yesssss!
Josh's deviled eggs are for a catered affair; Emily's eggs are for a potluck; Desi's deviled eggs are what I'll make in my kitchen and eat all myself!
Nice way to say level one chef’s deviled eggs are not presentable.
That tip of slicing a little bit off the bottom to make sure it doesn't roll is freaking awesome
Or get one of those cheap plates with the egg divots.
Keep Desi coming!! I love to cook. But his "I'm not doin all that" vibe is everything 😅
i think it's annoying why tf is he even on here when he doesn't want to cook or do anything
@@videos44 Agreed
@@videos44i do want to cook
@videos44 you and me both, I find it a bit annoying that does not want to do anything compared to Emily, when she was a level 1 she was able to do stuff even if some were a bit above her. If I seem a bit angry please I don't mean to sound angry so please tell but yes you and me both.😅
There’s no way Desi actually makes them like that. Cutting horizontally and cooking an egg for 20 min is actually crazy 😂. I gotta watch more Desi videos lol
He’s usually better than this! Like in the other videos I’ve seen of him, he’s competent with his air fryer and just uses cheaper ingredients. I dunno what happened here lol
@@Joxxerfoxy Peeling and cutting eggs and keeping them whole can be difficult. I've made the same mistakes he did.
Yes, especially when you boil them for 17 minutes. xD@@Lynn17
@@Lynn17 only boil for 5 minutes (6 min for jumbo eggs) cool for about 10. They will peel nicely.
@@Lynn17and he’s got some big hands. I think he did well
How heavy handed should we be be with the Eggland’s best eggs ads?
“YES”
For real 😂 i got ads in the video and the youtube ads were EB ads too
Bruh I’ve gotten interrupted three times with twice in a row 15 second ads. 😭
Every pre and mid roll ad for egglands best. HOW DO THEY DO THAT!?
I love how confident Emily has become and she's kept her sense of humor. Kudos!
Desi's vibes are so soothing. I hope he comes on more. As for John's eggs, I know a lot of people would love how much spice there was, but I wouldn't be able to taste a thing over the pain, haha. But I liked the trick with the bottoms!
My mama taught me that trick as well! But I also highly recommend getting an egg platter.
@@carebear91 Yep, I got a 2 layer (stackable-they lock together or you can use just one, either way) egg carrier that the egg inserts can be removed to make it double as a holder for cupcakes or anything else… doesn’t hurt that I got it very inexpensively and (important to me) it was made in the USA, but it has been incredibly useful when storing and transporting eggs! Saves the time of trimming the bottom, too, which is also one more way it might break, slippery little 👿 devils. 😅
We need to start a go fund me to send Emily to culinary school and complete her character arc as a level 3 chef.
Stop.
@@cwg73160coward
She already is if you compare her to this chef...
Take my money
Desi's eggs are definitely a vibe
Not gonna lie, they ain't pretty but I bet they taste great.
A whole week? If I'm not wrong, that should be the longest cooking process on this show!
Not worth it! I'm ready to eat NOW 😂
Frank invented long cooking processes. :)
wait till someone makes black garlic for a recipe
You forgot that Frank spent a month building a time machine, so he could grow his own apple trees
He didn't even USE THE YOLKS! 8:53 They are sitting there on the counter, he never used them at all!
I love that Emily's level 2 is rooted in the essence of level 1. Elevate using chicharrones, but you can buy them as they are, they're already perfect.
I wish we got to see all 3 of them trying each other's recipes like we do with the cheap vs. expensive videos.
Every time I see Emily at Level 2, it makes me soooo so proud for our girl! Been rooting for her for so long! Gaining knowledge and confidence
"Dad, can you make deviled eggs today? "
"Gotta wait 7 days."
Haven’t watched in a while but it’s so cool that Emily has leveled up!!
Rosemary trout is a national treasure, and my favorite part of these videos! I miss her presence in the ingredient swap recipes
For some reason I forgot that rosemary is a person
And not a recipe for trouts seasoned in rosemary ;-;
I have some ideas for future 4 Levels episodes (& by “some” I mean a lot). Here they are:
- 4 Levels of Ribs
- 4 Levels of Stew
- 4 Levels of Lemon Meringue Pie
- 4 Levels of Chimichangas
- 4 Levels of Quiche
- 4 Levels of Stir Fry
- 4 Levels of Chocolate Mousse
- 4 Levels of French Onion Soup
- 4 Levels of Risotto
- 4 Levels of Blondies
Lame
How about Shepherd's Pie?
I would so watch the risotto and quiche ones
Great suggestions! I would love the stir-fry. That's the kind of dish even a true level 1 can knock out of the park as a crowd-pleaser, but a level 3 can elevate it to heavenly.
Chef Frank: To make my French onion soup i founded France
If you told me that Eggland is sponsoring this video, I would not be surprised. Already got two ads for them not even 2 minutes into the video.
Also, I'd be curious as to whether they can make deviled eggs that don't smell terrible. I never liked the smell.
The episode is "presented by Eggland's Best" and the cooks are using Eggland's Best eggs, so, yeah. It's sponsored.
I'm pretty sure I even saw Daniel in one of them. I've seen him in a Panera ad too.
i got 3 also 😂
@@Pixie-ur2ixI was wondering if anyone else spotted that! Usually I see him shirtless in underwear or shower-product ads!
@@Pixie-ur2ixI saw him too!
Ok, totally loving the amateur. He vibes, and I LOVE that the filling is chunky! I love that rustic feeling. Pro dude had a few great ideas too! But I'm sticking with the the Vibin' Desi.
The bowl of ice was quite a pro move for a level 1 chef. 😁
Also, so nice to experience Emily's culinary arc throughout this series.
And I want to try the cured yolks as a garnish at some point, I just need to remember about it a week in advance.
I only know the ice trick because it's on the first recipies whenever you google "how to make hard boiled eggs" 🤣
Love how Daniel is in the commercial for the eggs
Omg yes! I came to the comments to see if I was the only one who noticed. Love that for him. 🥚❤
Desi is naturally hilarious, I love him
Desi is pure chaos and I’m here for it.
Emily, those shocking puns were re-volt-ing, I hope you didn’t charge for them.
The eggscution was pretty eggstra as well.
We love Emily as level 2 but she will always be the Ketchup girl in our hearts❤
I love Rose!! Thanks for bringing the science and insights to cooking ❤️
I'm still over the moon that Emily is a freaking Level 2 chef!! She is a star!!!
As someone who loves hard-boiled eggs, I never thought to steam them before. Thanks, Josh! Also I typically just use cold water, but ice sounds even better.
When I think of deviled eggs I think of head to tail cuts. Desi just showed me something new with the across-the-waist! Though his cutting and scooping techniques remind me too much of how it is for me half the time I try to make deviled eggs.
Everyone's eggs look delicious, but I'd ask for a big glass of milk to go with Josh's.
I heard about steaming eggs several years ago and it's definitely a great way to cook them. Peel easily, cook consistently, no big pot of water to dump.
Wanna try this soon!❤🎉😮 thanks so much Epicurious! You guys are the best!🎉🎉
Love deviled eggs. Can't wait to see the various techniques. I also enjoy seeing how Emily has grown in the series.
Emily, if you see this, I hope you don't mind the ketchup comments. I love seeing them because it reminds me of just how far we've all come. Congrats on level two!
emily leveled up. gains a talent point. selects deviled eggs specialization.
“Well we all know the Devil likes heat, so we can’t make Deviled Eggs without Hot Water” 🔥 bruh 😂 great way to start the Cooking 🙌🏻😂
Perfect timing, I've been craving deviled eggs like mad!
Honestly I never had these and I may try them out. Emily's recipe looks nice.
My mom made something similar but she fried some mushrooms on the pan until browned and then blended them with yolks, then stuffed the eggs back. Very nice.
Congratulations Emily. I think all of the Epicurious viewers are proud of your growth in the culinary arts.
Congrats Emily been watching the show for a while now and am happy to see the progression of your chef skills!
I’ve always done the plastic bag for the piping but I never thought to use the bench scraper to get all the filling up in tip, that was so satisfying because you don’t waste any, can’t wait to try that next time!
I'd love to see them try each other's dishes... I would love to see a different opinion other than the chef of that dish...
Just yolkin' around. I do appreciate you so much, Emily.
Emily did the best job plating!
This cast was great! 🎉
Love the seasoning combinations in josh's eggs!! my mouth was watering imaging the spicy creamy flavors
i was just saying yesterday that i miss emily...so im glad this came up today.
I'm surprised how people are still celebrating Emily's graduation xD like it's been a while but we still praise her for it
and then there's me who peels the egg and eats it whole without even cutting it in half
I do sometimes just peel an egg, drop on a little mustard and mayo and paprika, take a bite, and repeat
I use my air fryer to cook hard boiled eggs. No water needed. 275° for about 16 minutes. They come out perfect.
Every one of these people is delightful to watch.
I absolutely love Chef Joshua. He's so knowledgeable and has a great personality. Love to see more of him!!
And some ego..."I bet this is the first time serrano pepper is on deviled eggs. I guess that mekes me a genius"
No comparison between the chef and the two others. He's on another level!!
I do a traditional filling but top it with bacon and candied jalapeños 😋
This sounds like a vibe. I'll have to try with the candied jalapeños
Yum....i would love to have 3 of each😊
that level 3 one looks sensational
I like the level 3 chef..
As an instructor his explaination are easy to grab on...
Lots of great ideas. I will be trying Desi's addition of air fried bacon the next time I make these for my husband.
I did not now a cooking show/series would have this much attention into its chefs, definitely did not expect the character development for emily. Also Congrats Emily!!!🎉
I'd love to try pro chef's result. never had something like that in my life. I liked how he was explaining process
EMILY DONE GOT PROMOTED!
I love the look of those cured yolks! I have to try that one day.
desi's eggs remind me of the ones my mom used to make for holidays when i was growing up! they are perfect and ima cry
I am so happy to see Emily graduate to level 2! Yay, Emily! ❤❤❤
Nice to see Emily get a promotion! Congrats!
Desi is more of a level -1. Emily had such a character arch, those look great!
His food looks like a toddler made them.
Hey, hey,@@bgleadbetter, no food-shaming! It still eats.
Aww yeah!! This episode was fun, and deviled eggs are one of my favorite things. :)
I’ve never cured eggs, but they look really nice
Apparently it's fantastic on pasta
Now I need to check who invented deviled eggs. I've always made them with curry, not chili. When I do a platter, I get a bunch of different curry pastes, and do a variety of different devillings.
First time seeing Joshua. Immediately a fan 💯
I grew up not liking deviled eggs… but I found a recipe I thought I’d like, so now I like sour cream and cheddar cheese deviled eggs. I like the taste of sour cream better, and the thicker consistency it creates. Having deviled eggs with some cheese or bacon makes a great breakfast or lunch.
wow, those Eggland's Best eggs sure look great, I really need to go out and buy some Eggland's Best eggs! (😭)
Yeah, that was terrible product placement. 😂
Brad Leone has entered the chat lol
Serious note though, poke an itty bitty hole in the end of your egg - will peel like a dream consistently. Aioli is pounded garlic with oil drizzled in and an egg yolk - mayo is oil whipped with egg yolk (you can then add in garlic or herbs or anything)
Congratulations Emily so proud of you 😊👏
I've never thought to steam my eggs instead of boiling them, but now I really wanna try it next time I'm making hard-boiled eggs.
Yes I need directions though!!
Met Desi headed to Tampa a year ago and he's literally as sweet as he is funny. I am DEFINITELY going to make Chef Josh's version at some point during the holidays
my own creole and the egg peeling!!! desi is hilarious omg please more of him
love the level 4 version, gave me some ideas. I do add Ghost pepper or Carolina Reaper pepper to mine personally.
YESSS EMILY I STILL GET SO EXCITED SEEING HER AT A LEVEL 2 AHHHHH
I like that this level 3 chef isn’t messing around w his spicy
Level 2 Chef Emily!!! Goated
My absolute favorite hack for Deviled Eggs is adding shredded pepperjack cheese to the filling. I did it on a lark one year for Thanksgiving and now it's pretty much a requirement for my family 🤣
I liked the little cannons on top. Perfect for 4th of July.
EMILY IS NOW LEVEL 2! LETS GOOO
More videos like this, please! 🫶
I'm so happy for Emily!!!!!
Yay! Emily is finally a level 2. I LOVE her.
I usually prefer the Level 1 or Level 2 chef’s dish but in this case, I’m really craving those spicy deviled eggs!
Im so happy seeing Desi in this video, the shot cup devil egg is genius 😂 i will be trying it. Emilys own looked the tastiest to me, chef Josh had the prettiest.
Edit - grammer
Ok but I actually like the idea of cutting the eggs to make it more like a cup. I maybe wouldn't do that if I was serving a group, but for myself it means more filling.
I love Desi because it's always like he's cooking for himself and the pressure is low and that's so refreshing and healthy ❤
Congratulations Emily!
6:50 Pork Rinds, Excellent!
"i dont go for measuring, i go for vibes" legit, probably the best tasting eggs up there, i can tell just by that
I prepare deviled eggs every year for Christmas, as one of many appetisers, and I always used to add canned tuna in the filling, and I top each egg with a tiny caper and a thin slice of pickled pepper. They taste delicious!
That sounds tasty.....which gets me thinking....hmmnnn... canned wild pacific sockeye blended smooth and added to the filing...
If you're going for 70s British devilled eggs use salad cream as a binder for your egg yolks.
