Margaret Thatcher - UN General Assembly Climate Change Speech (1989)

- On November 8th 1989, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher gave an inspiring speech to the UN General Assembly about the environment and climate change. Over the course of her half hour speech, she set out the problems we face and how we could resolve them. It was one of a number of inspiring climate change speeches by the then Prime Minister.
The full transcript of this speech is available from the Margaret Thatcher Foundation website www.MargaretTha...
"She was reportedly prouder of becoming the first Prime Minister with a science degree than becoming the first woman, and as Prime Minister..."
Rightly so. The second is an immutable characteristic
Bloody hell. The more I listen to this the more three things occur.
1) Margret Thatcher is a Conservative. About as (C)conservative as it gets. Yet she is championing the fight against climate change almost 35 years ago. This being almost 30 years before the current wave of actions and protests
2) Almost everything she said might happen - has happened or is happening. She covers CO2, intensive farming, changed weather patterns, the ice caps, impact of ice sheets on absorbed radiation, energy policy, local and international levels of impact and practical need for observation and action. She cites reports from both the ice caps and the Amazon rainforest.
3) She puts the facts across in a very easy to understand. Citing her sources and providing ideas for solutions. Not just screaming at everyone around her or yelling at someone else to come up with a solution.
Because the "Green" movement was created by British fascists who want eugenics.
I agree with your points, however, here we are, not too much further forward. Infuriating isn't it. And now we have the bumbling orange buffoon back on the scene and hearing what he was saying last night in his cosy chat with the increasingly unhinged Musk, concerns me greatly.
It amazes me that so many conservatives today are climate change sceptics or are against taking action. Thatcher - the quintessential conservative - speaks clearly and powerfully on the topic, and saw the problem clearly.
I think your POV is flawed for the reason Thatcher was so hated; party political narratives. Most conservatives aren't sceptics but the anti-conservative media arent going to tell you that. The difference is how we achieve better, deliverable outcomes and the anti-conservative media call anyone with a different approach, deniers, rather than sceptics. Sceptics still engage in change, deniers dont.
What makes you think conservatives are against taking action? Everyone wants clean air, water etc.. Conservatives would prefer solutions that actually work rather than wind and solar which are only enormous fiscal drains on all of us.
@@joemccarthy7120 Conservatives in many countries - especially my own - have fought tooth and nail against any form of climate change action. In fact, they rolled back a free market solution that we'd implemented here (carbon trading scheme), which they themselves had supported about a decade earlier.
So, conservatives have a pretty terrible track record around this - on the science, and on practical solutions. I think Thatcher would be appalled by many modern conservatives. To the extent that folks are going back to her wise messages here as forms of inspiration...that can only be a good thing.
Thatcher did if for a reason get rid of the minners and foreign oil and use nuclear
@@uptwisting The problem isn't the anti-conservative media. It's the right-wing media. After all, the right-wing media is constantly obstructing and obfuscating any meaningful action or discussion on climate change.
If conservatives - of Thatcher's ilk - really care about climate change and believe in the science, then I think they should be putting pressure on conservative networks to convey their true feelings.
I can't believe I'm 55 & only just heard this speech... She was my PM when I first left school... but I never heard this speech before...

Fantsatic Speech
I agree,
it is the most sensible and balanced speech on climate change too!
They don't want you to hear this speech. And for so many different and conflicting reasons. If only we had listened.
All woman that think they are not respected by men look at one of our greatest leader .. she was great..
She is, without a doubt, one of the greatest prime ministers the United Kingdom has ever had. the pleasure of being lead by. Her stamina, charisma and forthright style of leadership had left a great legacy in this a great nation.
Holy Christ. This would be funny if it was a Monthy Python sketch, but, being the ordinary folk this demon has persecuted non-stop, is just sad.

@@will123134 You don't even get it do you? I don't argue with uncultured swines who disdain mankind, but if you support this rubbish it comes as no surprise.
@@srenheidegger4417 the ordinary folk like my parents loved her because they grew up dirt poor, as newly weds lived in a rented homes, didn't even qualify for council housing as the both worked and with little hope or prospects of significantly changing that, then she came along, changed everything and they retired as homeowners with lifetime financial security.
@@srenheidegger4417 more miners were made redundant by Harold Wilson than by Thatcher. It was a dying industry. More to the point only four pits ever actually balloted on the proposals her Government put forward and they actually voted in favour. Scargill couldn't have that and in fact the seeds of the strike were sown on the night of the 1983 General Election where Scargill called for a revolution on the streets to overthrow the newly elected Government. Just have a think about that, the miners were pawns in his political ambitions.
Holy cow. Why hadn't I even heard of this speech until now? Talk about prescient to the year 2019.
1989 through 2019: The Empire had struck back.
Predictive programming, they had over 30 years to do smth about huge corporations polluting and damaging the Earth, but all they did was encourage it so we can now be dumb and docile and sit quietly while we're being exterminated
The bullshit scare campaign been going on for 30 years now ,
Also , you probably didnt hear her private conversations where she talks about population reduction by viruses. Hmm yeah...long planned things are happening.
Because it would destroy a false narrative.
Our old Maggie, She sure warned them back then, though some still deny it's happening.
It was because she used it to stop the strikes!!! It was not a fact!! It's proven that she did that!
Warned? Introduced the plan rather to enslave the population. Little lizard puppet
@@kaatteey How soundly some sleep under the lullaby of the Globalists is nauseating and insufferable.
The fact that Margaret Thatcher was the first to introduce the subject is absolute proof that it's a load of BS. CO2's part of the greenhouse effect is minuscule in comparison to that of water vapor. And for that matter the greenhouse effect does not drive the climate. Ozone is a genuine issue and CFCs should be banned. But that has nothing to do with carbon dioxide. Notice the threat to poor countries that their forests belong to the whole earth not to them. Also notice the push for nuclear power. This was just after her big battle with the coal miners in the UK. She wanted to end dependence upon coal and oil and to break the unions of the coal miners. Nobody, including Thatcher ever imagined doing away with fossil fuels. What they want to do is seize control of all oil gas and coal from the countries where it exists and transfer that power to their NWO global governance.

Its snowing right now.
There aren't many things I agreed with Margaret Thatcher on, but she was a hard headed scientist and could look at the evidence with a clear eye and make this warning decades ago. The failure of meaningful action by our politicians since then is to the shame of us all.
She also had the ball's to go with what she believed and what was good for the country, always country first

You're joking, right? Great speech... But she's responsible for the dismantling of society, virtually negating any possibility of cooperation on the scale necessary to sort this out. She also completely misses the point that climate change and environmental degradation are inevitable consequences of her politics. Exponential growth is cancer. Capitalism has failed us. Capitalism has sewn the seeds of our destruction.

As if she is reading the future. Absolute charismatic character .
In Europe kids were taught about global warming in the 1980s. Every kid in Europe knew this back then. I wrote an essay about global warming in 1986 when I was 14. (I still have the essay in a drawer). "The future will have more flooding, higher winds, more droughts etc. due to the release of CO2"... This was well known in the 80s, now we see it daily live. Should be undeniable, but people still do not believe their own eyes. There was climate change denial in America. Now the climate deniers state "the climate is changing, but is it man-made?" YES... It was predicted in 1977 by Exxonmobil in 1977.. Please check out this fact. For anybody denying climate change, read Exxon´s studies and ask yourself, "they predicted it in 1977, now it is happening. Is the man-made release of C02 causing climate change really something you can deny?"
@@barryUFF Yep, I remember well that it was mentioned frequently on the news and I seem to recall it being mentioned at junior school as well. Over the last decade or so, as the lunacy of the internet has gotten into full swing, the wilfully ignorant and perenially terrified conspiracy theorists have collectively been bewildered by the increasing public talk of having to do something about climate change. One would think it had not been mentioned before the twenty first century. If the industries and governments of the world hadn't dragged their feet then scientists and environmentalists wouldn't have to be badgering us to knuckle down.

Oops that's Speech..........😊
For the modern age, Mrs Thatcher is probably as close as it gets to Plato's vision of an ideal ruler: instead of the "philosopher-king", here we have the "scientist-prime minister".
It's doubly a shame that Merkel never managed to get the same work done despite being a scientist and working in an environment much more open to ideas of climate legislation. It's a damn shame Germany still burns lignite and invests in stupid projects like Nordstrom 2

What a leader, wish we had her now!
she was extremely steadfast in her ways ,her speech, and the like and made alot of enemies along the way however she never wavered in her strategy and so she was always very consistent love her or hate her.her level of consistency is a rare find these days.shes one of a kind and britain will never be the same without her.period.
As much as she has been demonised (and there are good reasons to find fault with her), when one compares her to any British politican today (especially Tories) pretty much any of the current crop seem embarrassing. She gave this very long speech with good diction, no "erms" or faltering, intelligent and important words describing the issue in depth and considerable detail rather than sound bites. Can you imagine any Tory today trying to do this? They wouldn't have the oratory skill or gravitas, and Sunak would in any case be too scared fo fear of upsetting part of the electorate (a war on motorists, don't you know) :) Today it's all vague concepts, often completely at odds with what the same speaker had actually done a week before (again I refer to Sunak; with his claim to be taking decisions for the long term, not scared about whether the electorate didn't like it, when he'd just pushed back the deadline for selling new ICE cars!).
Very good speech, full of Facts and Science findings. This is how you communicate to the world about the environmental ware and tare on the planet, not Greter's screeching and screaming to the planet.
Do you mean wear and tear?
Are you trying to talk about the good young Ms. Greta Thunberg?
If the latter is right, then, I don't know what you mean by "screeching and screaming"; I've only ever heard her sound much, much more sane and sensible than by far most politicians and certainly all climate deniers.
And if she ever did sound bothered or upset, fair play to her, too. It's really totally upsetting just how much younger generations have been betrayed by arseholes demanding "more of the same high carbon polluting business as usual and forget the risk to the future"!
Maggie was wrong on many things- she destroyed my town , Motherwell a steel town , but as a scientist she was spot on with this and spoke with real passion and commitment. And she was and is right
Very true Alan.
Big industry, and those who control the worlds finance, decided that after this speech Maggie would have to go. That day, at the United Nations Assembly, she had signed her own, political, death certificate 🤭
@@PortsladeBySea Well at one point in the speech she says it would be a mistake to blame multi=national corporations, so I don't think that idea holds up.

Can't say I ever liked the woman, but damn, we've not had such a good orator or leader for the UK in my time. This is 1989 and we're still arguing over climate change and if it's real or not in 2020. Wake up people, please.
I agree, I cannot imagine any subsequent UK politican speaking so brilliantly without pause or stumble for a prolonged length of time. She was greatly impressive in her ability, not to mention she was putting this important subject centre stage and giving its due emphasis.
Every PM and Government leaves people behind and makes mistakes, it's impossible not to but I believe if people researched all the good things she did, people would have a very different view of her. She was a force and quite frankly, the best PM the UK ever had.
@@uptwisting It is an amazing speech. Don't get too carried away though. She was hugely talented, clever and great orator. None of this msttered a fig if you lived in tbe North of England in hervera. She ruthlessly create a two tier nation as never before destroying community after community with exactly the same precision and clarity as we see here. We will never recover from the damage she did to us as a whole nation. This piece is immaculately informed and performed so that possibly at last she was exactly the force required at that time. It is significant that her business driven government tore her apart only a year later.
@@sarahtacy9045 She certainly made huge mistakes, which looking back with 2021 climate eyes, some may see as inspiring eg-the pits, but they were going to close anyway as they were broadly unprofitable.
We couldve let them go on, I do agree but this was a battle of ideology and neither side wanted to give. People forget the unions role in this. They ultimately harmed their cause too.
She made decisions she thought had to be made which some socialists would've approved of, eg-saving British Leyland but it's correct that equity was not retained and some products of that save went on to be profitable for non-British business. Labour did the same when they failed to save Rover and risk is not something government do well.
Her ousting was typical politics, which all parties get involved in and the Poll Tax ensured she was cornered. There is no significance, only opportunism.
I'm from an immigrant family and Thatcher helped us hugely, so it's not as easy to say 'two tier'. We went from nothing, to establishing lives. To say 'we will never recover' is ridiculous. We have every opportunity to recover and the world is a very different place. We will never recover if people keep putting party politics above policy.
The clip in question shows how to put policy before party politics and should serve as inspiration. 42 years on and people would still pigeonhole Thatcher, than learn how she achieve success. Shame on us.

Yeeeeahhh, who knows what the main arguement is?
I personally near detested the woman, but that was just my prejudice. I respected her immensely and voted for her on all occasions. Politically I lean left on center, but the power of the unions "needed" to be broken, she broke them. The inhabitants of the Falkland Islands considered themselves to be British, they deserved defending, she defended them. And she was 100% correct on the threat of human induced climate change!
Unsurprising, since before she became a full time politician, she was a working chemist.
Her greatest legacy, IMO is that 40 years later, there is no debate here in the UK about the absolute need for our nation to reduce our carbon emissions. That there is cross party consensus on this.
I did not mourn her passing, bur I did not rejoice in it. She was a great leader in a time of need.
I agree with you I did not like her. Never voted for her. Respected her as a leader. I realise I am getting old when I start agreeing on some of her points. But she was wrong about smashing the Unions to the level she did and the privatisations which were in fact E.C influenced.
@@b.adebisi1393 Yep, regarding the unions and privatisations, they were a mistake which didn't take into account the damage they caused to communities and that privatisation, by and large, hasn't brought the benefits that were hoped. The trains and water boards are a good example of that, the privatisation of those sectors can hardly be considered a success, however mediocre they were before privatisation.
Very good speech. Both Mrs Thatcher and Mrs Merkel trained as scientists. Their science background and perspective contributed significantly to their reasoned and rational leadership.
And yet where did it get us? More than 30 years later it's much worse than predicted because not enough was done. And even whilet the effects are more apparent - and frequent - now than ever before, enough is still not being done.

British conservatives still very much are alligned with science.
I dont agree. I think they broadly agree but many anti-conservatives ignore the science which stifles whole change, such as having enough power to meet need, or ensuring change is affordable. You know, those things that non-conservatives use as a moral weapon to destroy debate & vilify the opposition.

I write in the context of the recent IPCC "Code Red" climate change report, and it's dire, which we should expect from recent events, and of course, our knowledge as shown by Maggie. She speaks in the context of the 1980s, showing, proving that the ruling class (those who make decisions affecting this planet.) knew all along. Ignorant voters were kept in the dark. After 32 Years, this speech is still relevant as ever. Fast track to COP26 Glasgow Summit 2021, climate change affects everyone regardless of race, language, culture, status (ie. increasing unpredictability of storms and heat waves), threatens food and fresh water supply. Climate change will create future environmental refugees and some wars in years to come. Q1. Who's going to pay for all this climate change funds, especially there is still continuous population growth in some countries. Q2. If coal, oil & gas are not to be used, how will this affect this group of professionals (ie. affecting different industries), and what are the incentives not to use these resources., What are the viable cost effective renewable energy sources? Will this lead to energy manipulation or energy nationalism endangering other countries? Q3. How are poorer countries going to adapt these sea rise? Q4. Will simply using electric cars , result in greener future - how is the electricity generated when massive populations are charging? if nuclear energy is considered, what are the safeguards to dispose used uranium, how to ensure that it just become Fukushima 2011 again?

We should give some scientific view on the traditional Atharvaveda Chapter, an ancient technology the recreate the worlds environment by the use of Homa Therapy which was taught by Shree Vasant Paranjpé.
Viewers should be under no illusion however, having seen this, that Thatcher would agree with any of today's climate activists antics; she absolutely would not, as she says from the halfway point. The big issue of the time, CFC's, was dealt with between 1987 to 1994. Also, although she loved business & industry, I'm not sure her fair & scientific mind would even approve of electric cars, they simply don't make sense & I think she would've pointed that out. Like many, I regarded her as devisive at the time, but now, with such weak-minded politicians, making strange decisions, today, she would've lead us on a clear path to the future, without punishing the general public & foisting ridiculous, & disingenuous green taxes on everyone.
