Dragon's Dogma 2 is finally here! I've been super curious to see how the soundtrack will compare to the legendary soundtrack of Dragons's Dogma 1. Whether its better or worse, I'm just happy we're finally getting more Dragon's Dogma music after so long!

As I recall it Itsuno said this is a sort of reimagining of the first game, and so, the music is as well. The new fight songs are really good, at least, but the rest of it is just generic fantasy fare. Fortunately, I got the music pack with old songs as well since I'm a sucker for DD and the remasters are really good.

This remind me the recent words from Nobuo Uematsu about videogame music becoming more "cinematic". Music is good, it fulfill its purpose, but lack a little personality.

@@babyjiren9676 I think there is something to be said about some of the japanese devs/ publishers never missing in terms of OST. I have a lot of reservations about nintendo, but by god do their soundtracks always go so hard. Altus as well; persona 3- 5 all have crazy good scores that are massively distinct in genre and sound from one another. A lot of Masayoshi Takanaka-esque funky, jazzy upbeat shit going on with both 'tendo and atlus and I go fuckin crazy for it.

@@yaqubebased1961 It’s literally the only DLC that is worth every penny. Got it the day before yesterday and it elevated my experience with DD2 just like that.
The character creation music for DD1 was really wonderful, unique and atmospheric. The DD2 music is good when you listen to it as music for a completely new game, but maybe it feels like something is missing for those who were expecting the uniqueness of the DD1 music.

While messing around in the character creator my brain automatically remembered the dd1 character creation music, it just sticks in your head.
Aw man it looks so sad when hes waiting for the big euphoric triumphant jingle at the end of the cyclops fight but it just fades out pathetically...
That's because its the new track. When I did the fight I got the old hype music. It changes randomly. Only way to only have the old music is to get the mtx option.
After playing about 60h the game and listened to some themes that got uploaded on yt. I'd say that DD2' OST focuses more on rythm than melodies than DDDA, which explains why they do not catch up that much.
Explorations musics do have themes, but they're played pretty slowly while the rythm is basically a long pedal point, which consist on keeping a same note or chord for a long time (example here : ua-cam.com/video/NrukVJqyYNo/v-deo.htmlsi=QJfnzI6NgDxFmaRs). This is a style that is perculary used in meditation music or by minimalists composers (the best example that can talk to a lot of people is the main theme frome Interstellar by Hanz Zimmer).
As for Battle themes they mostly have a lots of rythmic ostinati, which consist of a rythmic section played repetitively and the theme is played in top of that, which is either short or and played slowly for example here you have the cyclops theme who has a pretty slow theme (ua-cam.com/video/seiTkODm6to/v-deo.htmlsi=81yFmT7mWEnFWHiC). You have a small introduction at 00:05 to 00:25 and then the theme plays clearly until 0:40 and after that there's a little variation played by the strings until the theme repeats a second time with choirs) in the other hand you have the griffin theme here (ua-cam.com/video/Fd4O17JaqNU/v-deo.html) which presents quickly the theme at the beggining (0:08 to 0:15) and then another ostinato that goes cresendo until 0:48 where the theme plays clearly and then takes on varations on the themes at 1:20)
Here that's a small analysis I give from what I've heard from my musical ear. In my opinion the music is pretty great with far more contenplative and rythm-focused tracks, probably to catch more the more "grounded" medievalish vibe of the game. 'Tis a style that won't talk to everyone, and far more that contrasts a lot with the "edgie" style of the first one. But still, I find the soundtrack cleary awesome even if the themes are a bit harder to catch while playing, the music fits pretty well in the game.

@@DaviVasc so far the main menu, normal battles, boss, boss almost defeated, boss victory. That's what I noticed so far
@DaviVasc they brought back a lot of battle music, the main menu theme and the inventory/interface sounds. I miss the old screen with Grigori tho :( it was just to much more evocative than "generic fantasy town shot".

In the first one you had "Eternal Return" which can be heard in both the dragon fight, the credits, Daimon's fight and some others.
What leitmotif does Dragon's Dogma 2 have?
Even "End of the Struggle" was a leitmotif... it played often, like when you first met Aelinore. I miss the old OST so much!
Yes, exactly this. The lack of recognizable and recurring motifs is really noticeable in comparison to Dogma 1, which was really good about it.
Like even outside of the obvious example of Eternal Return, you have the motif from Grigori's theme which plays in the scenes preceding his boss fight.
I don't think it has one or if it does it's the most generic, muted and unnoticeable leitmotif I've ever heard.
If you listen to the credits in the true ending. You can find the leitmotif in the main menu theme, the steam trailer and the final sequence of the game.
I don't know much about music theory but I was able to recognise it in a couple places.
16:40 "End of life and death strungle" is so rewarding to hear it dinamically comming in when you near killing a big foe

Dragon's Dogma 2 featured some great music pieces, particularly in the final stretch, but you hit the nail on the head with your analysis. The soundtrack of the first game is undoubtedly superior for all the reasons you mentioned. It's a pity that the hype song you mentioned, End of the Struggle, didn't play, but you would no doubt be disappointed by how much flatter it sounds in DD2.
The last boss (true ending) where they reprise the main menu theme was a really good piece, it just lacked power, it’s epic but it could’ve been outstanding.
Thx for your insight! I actually really like the OST so far, particularly the battle theme in Vernum and I do enjoy a lot of the bigger monsters songs as well. Though I do miss that song that'd play best the beginning area when you leave the village, it was so nice 😢

Hey Davi, end of the struggle DOES play in 2! The game seems to randomise whether you hear the new triumphant track or an arrangement of end of the struggle, which is great but sadly it lacks the electric guitar flair

Any of the dedicated boss themes for the more notable monsters are, I think, really good. As far as I know, they also have different escalations or variations that vary in intensity depending of the stage of the fight.
There are two generic elite/boss monster tracks, too, though I don't like them as much, personally.
themes so far seem more regal and somber rather than the first game where i find it was heroic and a grand adventure-y. makes sense given the story so far, Hopefully we get more intense music at end game and hopefully dlc

Video: So yeah, now I see what you were talking about on the Discord, I don't know Dragon's Dogma music but I remember from your video that is pretty unique and yeah this one sounds less unique. I hope you are enjoying the game, because I saw many complaints about the performance and the mtx (I think this one is typical from Capcom though and you can get the item ingame). This video just reminds me of Blasphemous 1 and 2, not because of the music, both have awesome soundtracks but very different imo, but obviously the sequel is a improvement in many aspects and more metroidvania-like, which can make people think that Blasphemous 2 is a bit less unique, but I love both games and looking forward to the new content that I hope we will get this year.

Dragon's Dogma 2 OST it's well it's good but for some reason doesn't really do it for me. Which is weird because I enjoyed the OST for the first game and Dark Arisen
Honestly the music so far ranges from good to boring/generic. The main menu one is just so underwhelming. Everyone is complaining about microtransactions, but I think the only true useful purchase is the old soundtrack, which I bought immediately. It's just too nice and iconic.
But yeah, I don't understand what is happening with this game. The first one had so many unique tracks and it really set itself apart from all other similar games. This one feel like a mixed bag, like it's trying to be appealing to a more generic audience maybe.
The moment I listened to the character creation theme and the original is not there, I know I cannot expect much in the music department

Eternal return & the DD1 character creator music are definitely some of the best songs ever made for gaming. The guitar riff in the character creator is so awesome, they weren't afraid of experimenting at all. DD2 OST is not bad, but I was so disappointed there was nothing like DD1, it's so tame in comparison. I was really hoping they would have hired Aubrey Ashburn to sing again for the main theme, she has an amazing voice.

The only one that's worth any money actually. I bought it immediately and I'm 100% happy with it. Feels good to hear those sounds again.
I think I'm just a bit mad about it being a microtransaction because the base soundtrack for DD2 leaves a lot to be desired, so it really doesn't feel like an alternative choice.

How much or what music is actually changed and what to with it? You mention what gets changed but what exactly are they changed too. Is the title screen music changed to Eternal Return?
i thought i’m the only one who notice this issue. i love dragons dogma 1 musical scores. i love them so much i even downloaded their songs in my apple music to listen to them anytime i want. but on dragons dogma 2, i didn’t feel that excitement on soundtracks at all. i’m audiophile so i’m using some great headphones for gaming like hd650 and hifiman ananda so i would really appreciate good musical scores
The best songs in the game imo is the lesser dragon theme, Dragon fight (Grigori basically), and the purgers. Honorable mention is the theme that plays when you fight a cyclops

but really though: a bit bummed-out that Makino wasn't brought back for the score. in my 30-or-so hours of DD2 nothing's really stuck with me yet barring maybe the rearrangement of End of the Struggle that plays every once in a while, but even that's just a track from the first game and not even as good
i wasn't expecting a soundtrack as grand as Shadow of the Colossus but I wasn't expecting to be compelled to get the DD1 OST DLC so quickly either

Probably why they sold the original BGM etc as mtx even though I'm sure that doesn't change everything. I haven't got it myself so I have no clue how much music it actually changes. The description hints at battle music and menu sound changes being that of the original more. The hype song with monster fights btw is still in the game but it changes between the new one all the time. Some fights have the new one and some have the old one.

As someone enjoying Dragon's Dogma 2, I will say it has nothing to remind me of in music like the first had such as No Flying Into Free and Cassardis. Only the music used for turning the tide in a fight against something like an ogre is memorable even though it's pretty much using that same climactic victory sounding theme from the first game and its MMO spin-off.
Yeah, so far, the music is GOOD, but not quite as UNIQUE from what I've experienced. However, I haven't gotten super far either. In a sense, it is kinda refreshing, but I also hope more of the uniqueness the franchise is known for shines through in the later areas and encounters. I do, however, think I heard the song that plays when you're outmatched or facing off against too great a number of foes at once, and I remember it being quite good, but I couldn't focus on it too much since I was trying not to get mauled and battered by more wolves and goblins than I had ever seen in a single area ever before.

Once you reach Battahl the fighting music feels way better imo but DD1boss battle fight soundtracks have more soul and creativity (minus the DD2 Drake's theme starting with this intense heart beat... so good)
They definitly took a different road with DD2, I'm both happy and sad. Happy played a fair bit of the game, they are amazing tunes, it's just...different and probably less memorable than the first one

The game is catching a lot of flak for generally poor quality, and even the music is described as disappointing. Glad I passed on this one so far. I’ve been waiting twelve years, but if this is all Capcom’s willing to do, I wont be giving my money over.

So far I agree that it's nothing special. I was watching the Frieren anime and I'm considering using that soundtrack in the game. The default OST is just ok as a type of background loop that never comes to the front.

Hey, heres a bit of a random request for something to listen to. So in 2017 a *roblox* game called Phighting released and hasn't really been talked about ever since, despite the game still getting updates.
The music in the game is SO HYPE especially the song *Sensory Overload* (which might have one of the best best beat drops ive ever heard around the end of the song) and the rest of the game's music is alot more casual (sort of)
Another game with some insane music is Omega Strikers, so chekc that out when youve got time!
I really agree about the music; it's serviceable, but not really memorable! i've spent 150 hours playing, and while the gameplay is for many classes an upgrade, the music really isn't a standout and I find myself struggling to remember themes or leitmotifs or melodies. I really understand why music replacements mods are being made, and if I come back to replay or otherwise mod it, I'm definitely going to do that as well. The more memorable and thematic music of the older game can really only help

This reminds me so much of Sekiro and Elden Ring. Dont get me wrong, both games had music filled with atmosphere and personality, but compared to Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, those super memorable melodies that you come to expect from Fromsoft just wasnt there. Too often themes in the newer games would just dissolve into a mush of instuments that give ambience but nothing to really mentally latch onto. Just listen to Sword Saint Isshin or Starscourge Radahn to catch my meaning.
sekiro and elden ring still have a lot ost
Radhan's music is literally one of the best, it starts of slow with how ur supposed to approach him while he snipes from afar, there's the explosive phase 2 transition that works with the meteor attack, and the last part which sounds like a chant of an army sending of their general.
All of Elden rings main boss track spoke to the bosses character and the boss fight itself, literally all of them, in ds3 most bosses don't have much character or story outside of being a beast or someone with very little influence, very few tracks have that sense of variety in a singular track that speaks to the bosses character. Like dragon slayer armor is such a cool sound track for a boss that has zero lore or any meaning behind it.
Some of the tracks like aldrich, old demon King, and soul of cinder are just remix call backs to ds1 tracks, don't get me wrong, soul of cinders is great, but aldrich track is just gwyndolin's but more creepy, that doesn't tell me much about aldrich himself tho, same with demon King.
Pontiff sulyvhan, the boss with the most character and relevance only has an awesome 1st phase music, the choir and holiness with a dash of a sinister vibe communicating his character, he is the evil pope after all, but the second phase is just classic kitamura, loud and epic, but doesn't fit with the second phase at all, hes more passive in the second phase once he summons his clone, the fight is more methodical and patient, not chaotic like the music implies.

25 hours in and the little tunes that play are starting to grow on me. Feels peaceful, I love the one that plays in the area around melve. The music fits the adventures vibes of the game imo.

There's a lot of songs I like from the second game, but not quite as much as the first game's, but the song that most sticks out is the Griffin's fight theme, which I absolutely prefer to the first game's version, despite the nostalgia. That, the Dragon's theme, and the alternative heroic song that plays when you gain the advantage on a boss, all stick out as being awesome.
They held back, that's what went wrong. Too frightened to go full steam and sacrificed any unique personality.

The battle music makes me feel like a superhero but the title music is not good imo
It's so disappointing that they just went with the generic fantasy ambient route for the music this time. I doubt it's even composed by Makino Tadayoshi. There is no main melody no leimotif nothing
As good of a composer that Satoshi is, it's sad that the new music is just another generic rpg game ost. Which is sad because the game itself is better than the first in almost every aspect.
The music is not one of them so far in my playthrough, but it IS dynamic and it does blend so well but doesn't stand out. It's just far more orchestral and not flashy however for what it is it's good.
So, the game really holds back on the sound track until later in the game. Especially when you get into the endgame areas.
I will say, even knowing what you have to do at the end of the game, the music really sells the environment and the situation you find yourself in. I found myself being more careful, and ever so frightful of every encounter.. especially when the music picks up.
I think they do a great job with environmental story telling when the tracks assisting. Unless you want to play though the game yourself, search up the alternative main menu music of the game as an example. Be mindful of the spoilers that the videos may contain.

Yea I actually looked up the composer the other day bc some of the battle songs really sounded to me like they were reusing motifs from MH and sure enough it's the dude that composed Rise, which itself already sounded similar to World.

I’m so disappointed I’m in NG++ and no good music 🤦♂️part of me thought hey I got the audio book that lets you change the music in the game ohhh it’s only the title screen music so far that’s my only complain with the game the music so I’m literally playing Spotify on my ps5 while I play the game so I can hear DD1 music
