I remember the first time Andrew took me through COTM, that amp room was all crown microtechs. It was loud in that room. LOL love the video guys. Brings back lots of memories from SEEDS and celebrate with family.
While I agree with the advice given to "fix it at the source", the reality for maybe 90% of churches is, you have no control over the source. Almost every church I've worked at, has 1 option for mic capsules, guitarists bring one guitar and have no alternates, drums can't be "swapped for different sounding drums", etc. I know you guys have other videos talking about how to get better vocals, etc., but it can be helpful to point those things out in these videos too. Maybe ask the person, "how would you tackle those vocal mix problems if you couldn't just grab a different capsule?" It can be helpful for people to get new ideas on how to solve the problems they face at smaller churches with smaller budgets. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Thanks for the tip. The good news is, fixing things at the source doesn't always mean getting new gear. It also means checking microphone placement, tuning drums, adjusting the knobs on the guitar, etc. So, even if you can't swap out gear, you should still start at the source.
Cool stuff. Really eye opening to me personally and it really motivates me to keep a steady conservative mindset with tech gear at my church. This video hits home for me in so many ways only because their classic children’s ministry raised and trained me spiritually. I grew up with the KOTM children’s ministry at my parents church and remember entire KOTM children’s curriculum from the late 80s and all through the 90s aka The Gospel Bill Show, Ken Blount’s children’s music videos, The Zion 7 Report, Rover Comer the Faith Dog, The Green family puppet ministry, etc…Willie George’s children’s ministry shaped and developed my own spiritual foundation that I still carry with me to this day. I recall they were at one time the on the cutting edge of developing children’s ministry curriculum for the masses. My church to this day still uses their classic curriculum to train and build up the younger generation.
34:12 Sennheiser transmitters going crazy....I don't know what it is about these Senns.....they are a nightmare in this day and age to keep interference free. The Shure (digital) counterparts don't seem to have this issue at all.
We’ve never had issues with our Sennheiser transmitters and we have 5 large auditoriums with them. Properly deploy them and they’ll work. The “craziness” you see, is audio being pushed to the transmitters. The console was in virtual playback.
We've reached out to do a tour of Transformation, but haven't gotten a hold of the right person yet. We'll try to to make it happen! They're only about 35 min from us.
Fantastic video and homage to a true legend! During the lighting tour, the fixtures he mentioned around the drums and key stations- dark lights I think. Is this an in-house fixture or is there a particular one they use?
@@johnathanbasquez Thanks! I had no idea that you could create and display a target EQ curve with Smaart and use it together as a reference RTA… thanks again!
Is it useful too use Trim function? I am not really up to date with this function, but some people told me that trim does not effect the monitor mix, so I wonder if it will be useful to activate it so the musicians will not have a changing in ear mix while the first songs in sound check. I know we set it first, but often they do not wait or they just play that different and you can’t really use the first gain setting. Thanks 🙏🏻
Trim and gain can be synonymous depending on what mixer you use. Even if they aren't, trim would be an extra layer of volume control (like a fader), but would not accomplish the same thing as gain (setting the preamp). The only time you should need to make a gain adjustment after the beginning of rehearsal is if a channel is peaking. If that's the case, make the adjustment and just let your musicians know.
Yeah, thats exactly my question. We use an Allen Heath console and there it is like a fader that not effects the monitor mix, but in Church we also have an X32 and there I am not sure if it works the same way.
I appreciate it James. My friend Bryan helped get this front light setup and this was his goal. We added the leko to add some fill to the front so we can do the encores at different intensities to get a more dynamic front light vs a really flat one for worship. Also, helped make the field wider for the singers that move a lot.

Such an awesome vid. Andrew Stone is definitely a legend that I have learned so much from throughout the years of mixing FOH.
Excellent content! I have led a mega church tech team in the past and the information shared in this hour is fantastic! Thanks
Awesome!
Nice work, bro. Very helpful. I toured that facility about 22 years ago. The continual innovation and improvement is inspiring.
No doubt! Was anything the same as you remember it from 22 years ago?
Amazing mix of classic & modern gear!
Agreed!

COTM has an amazing legacy!
Super impressive 👍
What are these desks at 42:01?
All of these desks were made in house.
Is there anyway they could share the name of the LED Tape from central they didn’t know the name of in this video? Such a great look.
Hey, it’s the rounded RGB Pixel from 4Alive Enterprises out of Vegas.
@johnathanbasquez9914
Thank you so much. Appreciate it!
Thanks @johnathanbasquez9914
Hey ! I would like to implement the RTA that you have at my church. Can you help me do it? Or can you direct me to someone who knows?
At 5:09 he says for VIP's, what does he mean?
Whoever is the main speaker for the service. Example: The lead pastor.
Just a term used in the A/V world to identify most important microphone.

Thanks for this tech tour. Do you know what kind go drum throne they use?
Not sure. But if we find out, we'll let you know!
This is the drum throne: Ahead Spinal-G Saddle Throne. The drummers love it. We also have a buttkicker installed.

Any idea what the situation is with the HiHat mic? There's the isolated mic with something in front of it, any idea what that is?
It’s a SE shield to block out bleed from the kit.

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. Those are purchased. Astera AX5s and Darklights Precision D.

Does anyone know what software it is being used for the RTA and to create that target EQ Curve shown in this video?
We use Smart by Rational.

It's the DJI Mic
Those small lights used on the drums etc, any idea of the model they are?
The ones used as light on the players are Astera AX5s and scenic coverage are Darklights.
Thanks. Realised it was hard finding the darklights as they are now branded Gantom

Why have automated front light when you have catwalk access?
Are you moving your band/front line that much?

COTM has always had a dynamic front light and scenic look. Which we still shoot for in a more modern way.
