    This video of the timing belt change on the 90 rio was spot on! I love being able to know what tools I’ll need and n advance so I have everything right here when I need it. I did a friends 08 rio today cuz she shredded an alternator belt and after having seen ur video it gave me the advanced knowledge and confidence to go ahead and do the timing belt, tensioner, idler and all 3 drive belts. I did exactly what u stated and everything lined up perfectly. Car runs like a champ now. Thanks again!

    Nice video. You made it look so easy mating those two pulleys together when reassembling. Those were a major pain in the ass. I did like your allen wrench idea. Wish I would have thought of that when I did it. I ended up using thin zipties through two of the three holes so both pulleys could stay together while I threaded in one of the three bolts. I was then able to cut one zip tie at a time from the remaining two holes and insert the remaining bolts that way.

    Thanks again. I had a Honda CRV before, with 236000 miles and still running perfectly. It's a great car. Now I regret I sold it. I was told they last forever. I think I am going to try to take the valve head off and check and change the bad ones. First I ll do the compression test tomorrow. I am sorry if I am bothering you with this old little car, but I am trying to find the right and most economical solution. I will checking for your videos on removing the valves head that is not an easy job. I know how to remove the valves, grinding them and so on. Wish me luck.

    Here in Australia they recommend replacing the timing belt every 90,000 km (60,000 miles). I've done it once and I'm about to do it a second time at 190,000 km (124,000 miles) Should I replace the water pump at the same time, while I have all those components off, even though it's not yet leaking?

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  4 роки тому +1

      I always recommend replacing it with an original equipment item. It's easy enough to do, and it can be considered to be a maintenance wear item. Even though the dealer says otherwise. Some aftermarket water pumps are worse than the one that is already in there too, so you need to be careful about what you buy. Stay away from Chinese re-boxed imports. If it says made in China, don't buy it. Japanese, and Korean seem to be the best in my opinion.

    • @autophyte
      @autophyte 4 роки тому

      Thanks very much for that advice. I'll definitely buy an original maker pump, even though they are more expensive. Plus, I'll avoid kits with Chinese bearings, too.

    OK, thanks . Which year do you think is the best ? Today I rechecked the timing on the Accent, was OK. Checked the compression on the cylinders : No 4 does not blow the paper plug. I pour starter fluid in the intake and nothing happened. I will get a tester to measure the compression. I will also try to change the crankshaft sensor to see what happens. Before I had similar problem ( without timing belt broken ) and was this sensor. It took me less than 3 minutes to solve the issue. Well, let me know about the year of the Corolla. I don't think I will buy a new one for my kind of work. Again, thanks a lot. I will keep tune to your videos, they are really good and clear. I also like the ones from Erick the Carguy.

    @ramonperera6218 5 років тому +1

    Do you have a video where I can see how to remove the valves from the head of the Accent 2009. I decided to change all of them. Cylinder 4 has 0 compression, the rest have 80, 70 and 60 psi in that order. I guess there are more than one valve bent. So I will change all of them. Also I like to have an explanation of the adjustment of the cams and the metal chain. I was reading something regarding that, but I trust you more. You are more clear and explicit. Please, let me know. Thanks in advance. Ramon Perera. Miami.

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  5 років тому +1

      Actually, I am a certified engine machinist. It is best to take it to a machine shop, and get a full valve job. The valve seats will require a couple angles of fresh surface. DO NOT LAP VALVES. There is a half degree of difference between seats, and valves when you do a valve job to promote proper seat wear. You will also need to resurface the head to get the proper RA finish in order for the head gasket to bite properly. A head gasket is a wear item and will wear prematurely if you do not.

    My 2009 Accent broke the timing belt going at 75 miles, I was told there wont be any damage to the valves. Others tell me it is probable. Today I changed the belt, following your video's instructions but the engine does not start. Rechecked the timing points and nothing happened. To me it wasn't easy to install the belt, not as easy as you did it in your video, was really hard although I had the tensioner all the way up like you showed. I am thinking that maybe the belt is not the one it takes. What do you think? Please let me know your ideas and advice. Thanks a lot.

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  5 років тому

      All Kia's have interference engines. If you double checked your marks, and they are in fact lined up, you most likely have bent valves. A leakdown, or compression test will determine that. If they are bent, and your pistons are okay, you can get away with removing the cylinder head, replacing bent valves, with a valve job. Kia's bend valves when this happens all the time.

Amazing the belt has lasted this long!... Is it fair to say (from a symptoms point of view) that when the engine stutters and farts and misses at times - particularly when you put load on the engine - that these would be symptoms of a timing belt about to give up the ghost? Or is it simply that the car is demonstrating wear and tear associated with age? Look forward to hearing. Thanks

    Everything is fine, but in this car it is not necessary to unscrew the engine mount, the timing belt bypasses it. And all the screws should be tightened with the right torque, not with an air wrench until the stop. Then these screws cannot be unscrewed, they will break off. The power steering pump is enough to be stretched by hand, you do not need a crowbar, it does not take much power from the engine, you do not have to tighten the belt so terribly. I am waiting for a belt replacement in this engine, which has a mileage of almost 250,000 kilometers, and the timing belt, tensioner, and guide pulley are still original.
I followed this video pretty closely, but Im pretty sure I messed up somewhere. When I replaced the timing belt, I didn't put everything back together in order to test it, I figured that would take up too much time in case something went wrong I could just adjust something instead of taking everything back off. So with the cover off and no crankshaft pulley on I started the car and the car cranks now, however, the timing belt keeps sliding off. What keeps the timing belt from slipping off the timing belt gears/pulleys. Please any response will help, and if I did something stupid please let me know too.

      Pretty sure the crank pulley keeps the belt on.

    Belt broke in my 2008 Rio today. I'm gonna have to pull the head and inspect the top for damage. With that interference engine the damage is likely to be extensive. All I can do at this point is too hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

    • @RustBeltAuto

      Depending on how it broke, once in a while you get lucky. You could put a belt on it, and run it without putting it all the way back together, just to see if it is o.k. Leakdown test works too. Good luck!

      @@RustBeltAuto I pulled the head today. The timing belt didn't break but many of the ribs were broken off. I pulled the head and run my wire wheel over the pistons and to my surprise, there was no damage. However, inspecting the head I found the 2 intake valves in one cylinder slightly bent. So hopefully all I have to do is buy 2 new valves, grind them in, and replace all the worn gaskets and parts.

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  6 років тому

      Broken ribs can do that, and more. If I was me, I would bring the head on to a machine shop, and have it vacuum tested. Some put solvent, gas, kerosene, or diesel fuel in the ports with the valves closed to see if it drools out too.

      @@RustBeltAuto That's a good idea. Better to be sure than to put it all together and still have a faulty valve/s give me a low or no compression condition.

    I would never change this timing belt without replacing the water pump at the same time while access is available. This is pretty well industry standard.

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  2 роки тому +3

      You certainly can. The real problems happen when the pump is driven by the timing belt. This one is not. So if the bearings wear out, and it fails, it will have no detrimental effects on the engine.

    I wish you would have shown the crank mark and what it is pointing to. It is not very clear. Is the crank mark supposed to point to a little tit ?

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  5 місяців тому

      There are marks on the balancer and cover. If you line those up, and take it apart, you will see marks on the pulley, and block that line up somewhere.
