The Great Loop 009 Finding an Anchorage

  • Опубліковано 10 вер 2024
  • Camping and Glamping is like an anchorage vs. a marina. There is something raw and visceral about relying completely on your own gear without tethering to the power outlet at a dock. My intellect screams for an easy way to get the dogs ashore. To get provisions. Etc. But my wilder, lizard brain yearns for solitude. A sense of self reliance. And the satisfaction that comes from achieving it. I think I can blame my lizard brain for getting me into this whole mess in the first place. Why stop listening to it now?

There’s a thousand channels full of half naked beautiful people sailing brand new $1 million boats all over the world with no problems at all. But I’d still rather watch Marty and his dogs fixing broken down engines. Hang in there Marty! We’re all rooting for you!

Couldn't agree more. It's nice to occasionally daydream and watch half naked women sailing million dollar cats around a tropical paradise, but there's something very relatable and ataractic about all of Marty's videos.

Kinda cold time of year for boating adventure headin' north.....You're much tougher than me....LOL
Workin' on my big plan to sell my canal shack off Boatdrinksasota Bay (w/2 boat lifts.....elec. for 23' Beachcat and manual for 12' rowing/sailing dink), then downsize to 19' travel trailer to continue my nomadic life I started back in the 60s-70s (with income this time!!...settled down in '73)....Hopefully, with no debt or large bills in a year or so, will start saving for something like a Rosborough 25' trailerable trawler with the intention of doin' the loop....Prefer twin outboards.....5 yr plan....Might be 80 by then, but need to shake things up to make it to 100.....arrrrr

We never “park” a boat, unless it on the trailer. There has been some discussion on fuel savings while running one engine, here’s an easy trick for those who want to test. Cruise at your hull speed, say 6 knots and sync your engines and note speed. Shut off one and note how much it slows down. It will prob drop to 4.5 knots, anything over 3 shows fuel savings. You can increase power to the running engine slightly to get back to 6 knots which will still be less than running on two.

A little local movie trivia for you, the first bridge to your east is where the old Edison bridge used to be. If you watch the second Creature from the Black Lagoon movie at the opening, the lady drives across that bridge and turns rt onto Edward's Drive and parks at the Yacht basin (across the river from where you anchored) got on the boat and headed for the Amazon lol. They also filmed either Dawn or Day of the Dead there back in the early 80's. Oh yeah, Elvis performed at the exhibition hall which used to stand at the west side of the Yacht Basin.

I hope to one day make the great loop in my sailboat, though I know it'll have to be de-masted for much of the journey, if you can do it in a boat with one engine going about 6mph, I can do it in a sailboat with no sail and an outboard! :D

Depending on how tall your stick is, you _might_ be able to go all the way down the Mississippi to the gulf without de-masting after Chiraq. Pretty sure if you take the Tenn-Tom you'll have the mast down though. Note: Never done it, it's on my bucket-list so I've been doing a _LOT_ of research!

I strongly recommend working on those trim tabs while the boat is on the hard. This way once you get the replacement motor you can get her up on plane. It is nice to have 2 different charts to reference (main plotter vs navionics sonar). I often find anchorages on the sonar charts that the regular charts show as shallow water. But don't trust any chart 100% , ease your way in slow.

Mikes depth transducer being a foot above the bottom of his boat would mean that 4' of water would be 3ft under the keel. so 4 would be 3. I have a sailboat and the only transducer placement I could put it has it two feet above the bottom of the keel, so I used a sharpie to write '-2ft to depth' on the Axiom corner, so for me, showing 4ft would be 2ft in truth.
Edit: I re-watched that part, where 4 is really 5, did you mean that the transducer is a foot below the waterline? cuz that'd make 4ft shown to be 5ft true. Sorry to be finnicky, my OCD is nitpicking LOL.
