He's doing the "floating elbow" or "elbowless" version of seoi nage. There's videos about it on youtube if you don'w know what that is. I've only ever seen Japanese judokas doing this since the early 2000s. I'd be interested to know why Lombardo suddenly started using this variation.
It just works in left vs right. In my opinion it is easier than other Seoi versions from a lapel grip. Lombardo is good at Morote and he is good at getting the inside lapel. Him using floating elbow makes total sense to me.

It’s an easier variation for him too since he’s good at sode. They’re pretty similar

Under IJF rules it should be ilegal
I think Leverant is going to be the real monster to deal with if he goes to the Olympics. Nobody can deal with that dominating overhand right that he overpowers every opponent with. Lombardo caught him cold in the first six seconds but after that Lombardo was fighting to survive every second of the fight. He did well to survive and showed a lot of 'ring craft' but if their next meeting is in the Olympics I fancy Leverant to take the win. Having said this, I prefer Lombardo's judo. It is much more technical and stylish.
