I was a contra mark, usually rooting for the heels. I DID like DiBiase. Loved the way that he, Virgil, Heenan and Andre found a way to take the title from Hogan.
Nicola Volkoff had many many events with Bruno Sammartino a Boston and Madison Square Garden that I know of some main event tag teams with the iron shiek
btw , ....sadly nikolai next job after this on WWE tv was.... a homeless tramp guy for one appearance ....why did vince dislike / disrespect someone who was a total pro and good guy all the way when it came to wwe product ? ....oh wait ....perverse + vince = vince 2024

@@dougmeyers It used to be that the fans would pay to watch a heel get his comeuppance. Today’s fans seem to think none of the angered fans knew what was going on because they’d get caught up and suspend disbelief.
I didn't hate Ted. It was all on Vince. "Purchasing" human beings is a tasteless angle. And Nicolai was the greatest Russian heel in my lifetime. He deserved better. The whole thing made him look completely pathetic.
And at that point, getting heat on Ted was pointless. He couldn't work anymore. He couldn't take bumps because of his neck. Just Vince f-ing with people like he always has.
Nikolai Volkoff and Newton Tattrie had a great run as Mongols version one. Volkoff would also have a career working for the Baltimore County, MD government.
Both these guys have amnesia. Nikolai had already turned babyface when he feuded with Zukhov.
So becoming DiBiase's sympathy-gathering lackey wasn't out of character for him.
Also, they forget that he did a heel turn as DiBiase's lackey because there came a point when it became apparent that he was enjoying the heelish things that DiBiase was making him do.

credit vkm for giving older aging stars a solid paycheck during that time. nikolai worked for a long long time and had some main events with hogan and others.

The days when heels were hated to the point they required bodyguards in their normal lives! Ted and Jerry Lawler are among the best in history.

Before Million Dollar Man came along, Volkoff was my favorite wrestler/gimmick. When MDM humiliated Volkoff verbally, then with the Cents sign logo instead of the dollar sign, THAT ticked me off more than anything MDM did (even the basketball incident didn't make me as mad). It was the first time I really DID NOT like MDM. Looking back, I get it. Ted played the consummate heel to perfection.
When Dibiase made Nikolai Volkoff cried during a humiliation segment, I really HATED Ted Dibiase at that time.
Ted, if you're reading my comment, thank you for being one of the most despised heels in WWE history. 😅
