There is only one Patti Labelle and she has pipes from the Almighty. I'm blessed whenever I have the opportunity to hear her sing. Singing without the mic is only a small demonstration of her tremendous gift........she can also chirp and sing in a soft kittenish voice. I know people always feel the need to compare her to Aretha but there is no real comparison. Aretha has her own thing and so does Patti. I love myself some Ree too but Patti is my baby.

I agree with you #100 percent on that. I love Patti and ReRe is a very close #2, particularly for her later 60's and mid 70's recordings. There were good to great recordings on pretty much all of them. Patti and The Bluebelles didn't have people that new what to do with them so they toured, became Labelle, had a hit and left after a couple of additional albums. Their voices, as Labelle, in my opinion, should have been out there for all to hear and witness to. But, that's the way it goes for some. How about a cheers for all that made it early in their careers and others that never gave up, like Patti, who is now getting all the accolades she deserved for so long.

I saw her live last year. Videos never give justice to just how HUGE her voice is in weight. When she would belt into the microphone, I could feel a boom vibrate my organs. LOL. She could drown out the whole band and backup singers. And that's now that she's in her 70s. I can only imagine her youth.

I once heard her sing during a sound check and I simply couldn't believe what I was hearing! it was nothing like this. I could barely recognize her voice it was more like a Sarah Vaughnish delivery. I've never heard her sing quite like that before or since and I've seen this amazing woman many many times. the broadest style range I've ever heard!

They are just completely different types of singers. I disagree about Patti having better dynamics. Her voice is at its best when she's singing with power, whereas Mariah's is at its most beautiful when she's singing delicately. Mariah's transitions between registers are second to none, her whispery falsetto is entirely her own and a source of inspiration for many modern imitators, her whistle register is the finest in popular music, she's an incredible songwriter etc. But in terms of power, stamina, resonance she can't hold a candle to Patti. I don't think that means one is a 'better' singer than the other though.
Patti has always been able to sing, although in todays time 2017, it's not a strong as it use to be. Even Patti says it herself. Anyway, but what a lot of people don't realize is there are several other mic's on a stage besides the lead singer and back ground singers mic's. Some of the smaller mic's are there to pick up the audience feedback and also the band. So even though she steps away from her mic the smaller mic's throughout the stage will still pick up her voice. Sorry to disappoint but it's true. I worked for 6 years setting up stages for concerts. It doesn't mean that Patti still didn't have a strong voice, but again the other mics on stage that you don't see helped with that.
I love all the vocalist from Miss Melba Moore , Whitney toMiss Aretha Franklin to MissJennifer Holliday Miss Jennifer Hudson and many many many more but nobody does what Patti LaBelle does ! same with Ella Fitzgerald they just show out.period yes.Miss Diana Ross show out but not with VOICE and Miss Patti she's very very unique she puts her talent to the test each time she steps up on the stage ! Also I just don't believe she tells them to completely turn off all the mics on stage.... There's got to be mics picking her up. One person in another comment section mentioned something about mics being under stage or something who knows. In the clip of her singing forever young she has that golden jacket on.... For YEARS I wondered if there's a small mic pinned to her left lapel. She even tilts her head purposely to that lapel a couple times when she walks away and it kinda looks like something is there... Maybe under her lapel. In that same video you can see the mics aren't turned off because she walks away from the one mic... Then gets close to another set of mics and you can hear the audio get louder then she walks away again.... I'm just saying the mics aren't turned ALL the way off. That's true but then, Patti never had their level of training. I do have to give you props for bringing that out, though. Also, that's (for the most part) an old style of classical training. Those older singers (for the most part that had real talent) were the one's that did use that level of training. I don't know what to say about some of the newer crew.
There's Patti, there's Jennifer Holliday, and then there's everybody else. The younger generation in particular is a sorry bunch and what has been called a "diva" in the last 20-30 years doesn't come anywhere near. There are so many purely technical flaws in today's singing, it is a sad thing to see so many people struggling and ruining their voices out of sheer vanity and disrespect both for their own instruments and for their fans. Whitney and Mariah both sang themselves into an early retirement and what we have at the moment is barely worth mentioning. So many forced, ugly, unsopported, ill-produced sounds of gurgle-yodel-vomit variety.

I do agree that singers today lie in the shadow of the previous generations, and there's absolutely no excuse for it. There is a lot of potential, just not a lot of effort into training their voices.

What you don't realize, because of your age and you weren't around long enough to track her career, is that Patti was trained by a well known opera singer named, Marilyn Horne in the early 80's; A well known coloratura mezzo-soprano and she ( Patti) has also appeared on national TV with world renowned Tenor Placido Domingo of the famous "Three Tenors" epic, in a ABC special back in the 80's during her most successful years as an R & B/Soul artist. So opera singers are even amazed at her agility and vocal prowess and the fact that her career as endured for over 50+ years is a testament to her talent. Not even opera singers' careers have lasted as long.
Also, I don't know about so-called, "Pop Singers" of today, but in the 60's-early 90's, a lot of R & B/Soul singers had some kind of vocal training and some of them were well adverse in song writing, sight reading( sheet music), played instruments, sung multiple harmonic parts and arranged scores. I can name five dozen or more artists who/were capable of doing just such a thing.
BTW, I don't know of any so-called, "Pop artist" today who can sing without a microphone or without any other kind of vocal enhancements of today. They rely on such diasporas because they can not truly sing nor write music, read sheet music, arrange scores for instrumental parts nor sing in harmony without the aid of that harmonic box. They can not do any of these things, more or less sing without a microphone; especially not in acappella! Not too many great singers of the times could sing without a microphone. Patti was truly one of a kind in her time or anyone else's.

I disagree about Patti having better dynamics. Her voice is at its best when she's singing with power, whereas Mariah's is at its most beautiful when she's singing delicately. Mariah's transitions between registers are second to none, her whispery falsetto is entirely her own and a source of inspiration for many modern imitators, her whistle register is the finest in popular music, she's an incredible songwriter etc. But in terms of power, stamina, resonance she can't hold a candle to Patti. I don't think that means one is a 'better' singer than the other though.

Patti has always been able to sing, although in todays time 2017, it's not a strong as it use to be. Even Patti says it herself. Anyway, but what a lot of people don't realize is there are several other mic's on a stage besides the lead singer and back ground singers mic's. Some of the smaller mic's are there to pick up the audience feedback and also the band. So even though she steps away from her mic the smaller mic's throughout the stage will still pick up her voice. Sorry to disappoint but it's true. I worked for 6 years setting up stages for concerts. It doesn't mean that Patti still didn't have a strong voice, but again the other mics on stage that you don't see helped with that.

Also I just don't believe she tells them to completely turn off all the mics on stage.... There's got to be mics picking her up. One person in another comment section mentioned something about mics being under stage or something who knows. In the clip of her singing forever young she has that golden jacket on.... For YEARS I wondered if there's a small mic pinned to her left lapel. She even tilts her head purposely to that lapel a couple times when she walks away and it kinda looks like something is there... Maybe under her lapel. In that same video you can see the mics aren't turned off because she walks away from the one mic... Then gets close to another set of mics and you can hear the audio get louder then she walks away again.... I'm just saying the mics aren't turned ALL the way off. By the way she's my tied for favorite female singer so it's not disrespect.

That's true but then, Patti never had their level of training. I do have to give you props for bringing that out, though. Also, that's (for the most part) an old style of classical training. Those older singers (for the most part that had real talent) were the one's that did use that level of training. I don't know what to say about some of the newer crew.

There's Patti, there's Jennifer Holliday, and then there's everybody else. The younger generation in particular is a sorry bunch and what has been called a "diva" in the last 20-30 years doesn't come anywhere near. There are so many purely technical flaws in today's singing, it is a sad thing to see so many people struggling and ruining their voices out of sheer vanity and disrespect both for their own instruments and for their fans. Whitney and Mariah both sang themselves into an early retirement and what we have at the moment is barely worth mentioning. So many forced, ugly, unsopported, ill-produced sounds of gurgle-yodel-vomit variety.
lalagonegaga Actually, Whitney's voice deteriorated because of drug use and Mariah's deteriorated because of frequent alcohol consumption which acted against her nodules. I do agree that singers today lie in the shadow of the previous generations, and there's absolutely no excuse for it. There is a lot of potential, just not a lot of effort into training their voices.

Opera singers have been singing without a mic forever. I love Patti, love Patti, but that is a fact.
lol Patti isn't a trained opera singer so what exactly was your point? When people point out that she can sing without a mic it's among pop singers who are untrained. She relays on her gift and experience.

What you don't realize, because of your age and you weren't around long enough to track her career, is that Patti was trained by a well known opera singer named, Marilyn Horne in the early 80's; A well known coloratura mezzo-soprano and she ( Patti) has also appeared on national TV with world renowned Tenor Placido Domingo of the famous "Three Tenors" epic, in a ABC special back in the 80's during her most successful years as an R & B/Soul artist. So opera singers are even amazed at her agility and vocal prowess and the fact that her career as endured for over 50+ years is a testament to her talent. Not even opera singers' careers have lasted as long.
Also, I don't know about so-called, "Pop Singers" of today, but in the 60's-early 90's, a lot of R & B/Soul singers had some kind of vocal training and some of them were well adverse in song writing, sight reading( sheet music), played instruments, sung multiple harmonic parts and arranged scores. I can name five dozen or more artists who/were capable of doing just such a thing.
BTW, I don't know of any so-called, "Pop artist" today who can sing without a microphone or without any other kind of vocal enhancements of today. They rely on such diasporas because they can not truly sing nor write music, read sheet music, arrange scores for instrumental parts nor sing in harmony without the aid of that harmonic box. They can not do any of these things, more or less sing without a microphone; especially not in acappella! Not too many great singers of the times could sing without a microphone. Patti was truly one of a kind in her time or anyone else's.
