If you were to mount the microphone closer to the front of the hinge of that compartment, it would have less leverage on the door and it’d be harder to accidentally open it. Nice setup!
Nice video, Simon. I see at the end, that even your cat matches the aesthetic of your workspace. ;) Do you have to deal with reverberations when recording? If so, how do you combat that?
Thanks for commenting Tom! I'm all about trying to be coordinated, even down to the cats :p With regards to your question, because most of what I'm doing is just voice I just use a large-diaphragm dynamic (shure sm7b) which helps combat the room sounds for the most part to a level that at least I think it sounds good enough. I had tried a different microphone which worked much less well. I've actually changed the setup in this video almost completely, as well as the room, which is even worse for sounds. I see in your videos you're using a microphone out of shot, I'm no expert on sounds but I've heard that using sound blankets can really help if you're struggling with reverberations when recording, so they might be worth checking time out! (edited as I made a mistake with the type of microphone that the SM7b is)
@@SimonDrysdale Hey Simon, thanks for that info! I normally use a lav mic for most videos, but for narration I use a Blue Yeti in my little office, which is a small 10m2 room. That Blue Yeti picks up the reverberations so clearly, that I am looking for a different solution. Sound blankets are a good idea, but I would have to cloak my whole office (I have done some rudimentary testing). Do you think the Shure SM7B is a better choice for narration over the Blue Yeti? Best of luck to you! Tom
@@TomsCoffeeCornerHey Tom, yeah. So I actually spent ages looking into and trying microphones and finally landed on the SM7b. Your problem apart from the room is definitely the Blue Yeti. It's really popular but it's actually a condenser microphone that will pick up the room noise way more than a dynamic microphone like the SM7b. There's actually a website that one of my subscribers made that I found on the Blue Yeti (not a joke website, he's a podcaster): dontbuyayeti.com I have tried the SM7b and the electro voice RE20 and I found the SM7b much easier to work with. I think the other advantage that the SM7b has is that people are so used to hearing it that the sound signature becomes a sort of baseline in peoples minds. I find sound to be quite difficult to get right and am still learning, but having to fight the microphone is a massive time sink, which is why I got rid of my electro voice RE-20. If you already have or can get a good audio interface and a cloud-lifter , I'd get the SM7b. If you'd rather not deal with an audio interface then I have heard good things about the MV7 which is a usb microphone, there's also some alternatives on that website that I linked. All the best!
wow, good content, same hobby on the espresso machine and Herman miller, can you introduce how to use the mac ecosystem more efficiently or some useful tips, thanks
Well spotted, it's my favourite pen, had it for years. Best pen I've ever used. Lamy were really good service, it started leaking after I dropped it and I just sent it in and they replaced it and moved my nib to the new pen! Top class. Cheers for watching and commenting!
Nice setup 😍 Every little thing on your desk is perfect combination For the audio interface I would like to give suggestions you to check out for Superb Quality and matching your desk design perspective 1. Merging Technologies - Anubis 2. RME - MADIface XT
This is so sleek , I love that I stumbled onto this whilst watching the opening scenes to American pyscho , 😆 ,very similar aesthetic 👌

Amazing setup bro. Clean and minimal!
