Of the literally thousands of You Tube guitar videos I've seen, THIS one video here could be the difference between progressing at a snail's pace or making a huge leap in technique, tone and confidence in your playing abilities. Thank you Andrew, I hope every aspiring guitarist sees this crucial lesson!
Good stuff..I used to practice the first one with a slight variation, which some might find useful. Start on the 6th string say 5th fret as we usually do. Play the 5th fret with the 1st finger...6th fret 2nd finger..7th fret 3rd finger...8th fret 4th finger as here. Then the same on the 5th string etc. When you get to the 1st string come back again in reverse..4th finger..3rd finger and so on. The same as Andrews exercise. When you have that nailed start with 1st finger 5th fret 1st string and do the exercise in reverse. ..1st finger starting on 5th fret 1st string. it is slightly different. When you have that nailed..in different places on the neck including higher up the neck where things get fiddly.. the fun starts. Now start 5th fret 6th string and play 1st finger 5th fret..then 3rd finger 7th fret...then 2nd finger 6th fret and then 4th finger 8th fret. Alternating fingers. Same on the 5th string etc. When you arrive at the 1st string come back in reverse again......4th finger..then 2nd finger...then 3rd finger ..then 1st finger. Back to the 6th string. When you have that down... Then start 1st finger 5th fret 1st string ..1st finger..3rd...2nd...4th and so on. Because in the first exercise you started with the 4th finger..then 2nd etc on the first string. It's surprising how many people find it difficult just to do the first exercise when it comes to playing the 4 finger first then the 3rd..2nd..1st fingers. Every note needs to be fretted nicely and cleanly..no buzzing or anything. If you are fairly new to guitar many try reaching across the neck with the fingers, this will teach you to use your shoulder elbow and wrist joints to arch your hand over the neck and place your fingers onto the strings. You need the neck in the right position for you to play it, not hunched over the neck and no tensed muscles..and a comfortable seating position. And don't forget to try this standing up...many beginners play sat down then find real issues when they do play standing up. And unless you have long arms, long fingers and joints like a bendy toy...don't try it gunslinger style..Yet. These types of exercises i think are more a work out for your brain, it has to learn to do something it ain't used to...It made mine hurt...! But it's where muscle memory starts, a kind of brain re-set...and i'll bet Andrew can do it straight off the bat..assuming he hasn't before. Hope some find this little extra add on useful.
Loved it! I've played guitar from ages 8-40 (so far) and still found these somewhat challenging. I keep a tablature book with scales and theory I want to remember. I've added these exercises and will practice them. Loving your channel. Thanks!
Thank you kindly. Just what I needed. Bought my first electric a few days ago and this will really help. You are very clear, logical plus this will slow me down to practice accurately.
I can play scales and all that but this... I can't seem to articulate my ring finger to move without moving my middle finger and pinky. And the higher it goes the harder it gets. RN I gotta hold on to my index and middle just so I can move my ring finger. This is hard but it's gonna help
Those two string chords and octaves sound creepy lol..like your in an unfamilliar house and a little girl is at the end of a hallway, and then she isnt! Great lesson Andrew.
You forget that alot of us do not know what you are talking about when you talk so fast like we understand you. Just so you know most of us are trying hard to get better while the better players do not watch you.

I can play scales and all that but this... I can't seem to articulate my ring finger to move without moving my middle finger and pinky. And the higher it goes the harder it gets. RN I gotta hold on to my index and middle just so I can move my ring finger. This is hard but it's gonna help

What do you do when you cant have all the fingers on the fret board at once? I tried moving to the bottom of the neck but still cant get them all on
Yup, this is exactly what I was looking for at my level of beginner-ness.
