I watched this just to make sure I was using the right techniques - though never complacent about my playing. Seems that despite being self taught - over the years I've developed through trial and error the right way to do stuff. I think your most important piece of advice that should not be underestimated is - to relax. I have to consciously do that when I know something tricky is coming up to do.

I think the only problem is if a student doesn't think a certain teqhnique isnt working for them and then they need to explore a different way, I don't believe there is a set way as playing guitar is all about expressing yourself, I think whatever works for you as long as you are not causing undue stress on your hands. Look at Wes Montgomery who anchored quite alot from what I've seen.I think it's worth looking at everything and then deciding what works best for me. I think that is the essence of what makes so many guitar players 'unique'.

Start with alternate- never learn to do it wrong at first. My first lesson I learned that and immediately improved. 1 week in I was playing bar chords and Nirvana. If your teacher doesn’t hold you back that’s really not very hard. First song was heart shaped box in drop D. Week 2 smells like teen spirit. I was 12- I am now 40. Beware of paying teachers who talk more than they play- it’s easier to see and copy then take orders. If they aren’t doing it find a new one- teachers who don’t demonstrate are the worst. Some people really think they can teach what they can barely play- especially more advanced. If you don’t feel comfortable quitting that’s a bad sign- often the best thing to do is quit and move on bc a lot of teachers only know how to teach beginners. Or you might need someone who specializes in a dif style bc your tastes evolve. You might start with rock then decide to learn jazz etc. imo you shouldn’t teach an instrument if you can’t read music- but unfortunately most guitar teachers actually don’t seem to read at all.

I’m self-taught, and I feel pretty lucky after watching this, that I didn’t fall too far into any really bad playing techniques. I am seriously considering getting some lessons after all these years though, just to make sure I’m not fooling myself!
After long directing my own study, getting some professional, constructive feedback on my playing would be useful.

I'm happy to say that after playing for about 10 months while learning on my own I don't make any of these mistakes. I play fingerstyle and used to anchor the pinky but was able to get over it quickly, though while I was doing it I thought it would be impossible to do so. It turned out to be just more intuitive to not anchor. Though, players like Tommy Emmamuel do it ALL THE TIME and he's better than me (and probably all of us) by miles.

  • @2020heinsite

Thanks for these tips. As a new player I find that when I look at my right hand my left hand gets lost, and when I look at my left hand my right hand gets lost. I've been wondering how to solve that right hand issue without having to anchor it with a little finger because I know over time I'll need to spend more time watching the frets. The palm and knuckle brushing idea is going to get a workout now since I hadn't seen that suggested anywhere before.

Really good lesson, thank you. This “mistake” format doesn’t always work but this was great. I always felt guilty not strumming with my elbow (as someone who knew a little about ergonomics it seemed stupid) but now I am glad. The fretting hand thumb has bugged me as well that I wasn’t doing it right (talented professional Players didn’t seem to play the same way that UA-cam lessons were taught) you explained it really well.

My neighbour is learning how to play the guitar to impress people.
Thing is, he's been learning how to, on his own, for 3 months now and he is simply trying to imitate bits of the song, in melody, rather than using the right key.
Also, if he messes up, he has the tendency to "erase" that with some loud noise and start over.
He's been doing that, daily, for 2 to 3 hours per 'session.' He's got 3 melodies, revolving around, which he practices and every time he fails, it goes *KsschghghghGHGHGHGHGHGGHGGGGG* and then he continues from the start.
Also, he's decided the best way to practice is with the loud Superdeluxe Bass-speaker-system on. Loudly. Even the neighbours across the street, 3 homes above his neighbours, mentioned to me that there was some 'awful noise' last evening.
Perhaps this is the ultimate wrong video to ask for advice, but he's a very, very stubborn person that júst started living on his own and has mentioned a few times that he dislikes the world and "just wants some time and hobbies for himself."
Does anyone here know, if putting the bass-boosters or..bass-boxes or..whatever they're called...if it helps if you put them on 'spikes', so the noise isn't as loud?
He's been proudly telling his friends that he'll install 6 extra speakers to make the sound even "better", so I have to act fast if I want those 'spikes' to be under the boxes.

I like the way you teach ! You make things I've heard and saw before many times over but the way you present it I see the same stuff I've seen before over& over but I get it now! You show it in a way that makes it fun to do and easier to play and also learning how to play things the correct way and not fall back into the easier way, but the wrong way, rather than the correct way. ! Let me re-frase that... ! You show how to make it fun again learning the correct way to fret correctly and picking correctly like 4 example the spiderwalk. I like that exercise ! Because I'm self taught and done thing the wrong way finding out that doing thing the right way is refeshing and actually easier to play ! You understand what I'm tryin to say cause I totally understand everything you were showing on the couple of vids I watched of you teaching different tech.neeks that's why I'm stayin with you to learn more playing tech's and other things etc...

Quite agree with all this Andrew, many struggle because they just don't get the basic stuff nailed to start with.
Now i do have to admit that i do, at times, strum from me elbow...But i wouldn't advise that until you can strum the way you show. Properly.
As for picks i used to have no end of trouble with the darn things, due to a knuckle injury that left me unable to fully bend the thing. Picks just would not stay put...They'd start in the right place,a minute or two later it's spun round 45 degrees or so..I just could not keep a grip on the things,no matter how many different ones i tried. I finally fixed that by sticking a bit of self adhesive velcro on 'em...now they stay put..and i stick a few on the guitar with a bit of velcro as well..I'm a sod for losing them..

honestly, anchoring my pinky just feels better than to rest my hand on half of the strings. i like the openness of it. two amazing guitarists that i can think of on the top of my head that do it are tobin abasi (although he does move it around a lot, he still has it resting most of the time) and Chris Wisemen, who does a very weird mixture of resting his pinky on the guitar and picks like marty friedman.

I wonder how all those Country Western players especially those who use "Sock Rhythm" when accompanying contest or dance band fiddlers are ever able to play at all. Most of those old timers never use Barre Chords, they simply wrap their thumbs completly around the neck to the E string (D string if they are using a Dropped D" tuning, every beat and melody change there is a new chord, some of them pretty sophisticated. some with long fingers and thumbs will let the thumb extend to fret the A andD string as well, (5th string, and 4th string). I've watched these old timers doing Sock Rhythm accompaniment so smoothly that it looks easy, they change chords with every beat and make drums and a Stand up Bass only luxuries. They also change the chords not only for rhythm but for melody changes as well, sometimes using complex and difficult to fret chords using that thumb with a grip that seems to encompass the entire neck, I can't manage it, but there untold numbers of these mostly old. guys who do it effortlessly. You should attend a fiddle contest sometime just to watch those old timers play accompaniment. Many of these guys play in Jazz or Western Swing Dance Bands when not accompanying fiddlers, and find themselves in demand. Almost to a man or woman, they use those Sock Rhythm Chording changes, it is something beautiful to behold, yet according to you they are doing it wrong, I've watched these old guys play for fiddle contestants and swing dance bands for most my life they are doing something right, it sounds too good to be wrong. Go to a big fiddle contest like the National at Weiser Idaho or listen to any good Western swing band play for a dance, you might just learn something, I know I did, I got a huge lesson in humility. Thes usually Old Farts are something to behold. I watched an old guy accompany a fiddler playing Wont You Ride In My Little Red Wagon use probably 15 to 20 or even more different chords, it was something to behold especiallyy since this guy had a day job as a heavy equipment mechanic. How do you suppose he and others like him are able to play their instruments at all, let alone play them so skillfully?

no way dude your advice comes from classroom playing . That means you were trained for hours to do it a certain way . I developed my own style while also learning a few others . You cant say one way is right or wrong when your making sweet music . Nobody should listen to this as a guide for playing . Only use this to expand on your own personal style . In short don't become a robot who plays all the same old crap everybody else is playing . Originality and passion is the key to playing great guitar .

What are your views on downward pickslanting? I'm won't say Troy Grady pioneered this style, because he observed it in other players even before they knew what they were doing, but he may have coined the term. If you're not familiar with the concept, it's a little tough to explain in few words, but it's not unlike alternate picking, but string changes happen on the upstroke, which according to the theory allows for much faster picking.

So it's somewhat reassuring that most of my habits don't fall into this list. That said, I do need to consciously keep my middle, ring, and little fingers in tight with my index finger on my strumming hand. Doing the "okay" sign with my strumming hand and pick is probably a bad thing for me later on down the road I assume.

I have weak pinky and having a difficult time to get a clear note on the 6th string. I'd often do finger tapping on the table for strength exercise. I also found this finger exercise thing on amazon for guitar player to develop stronger fingers. I also have small hand and thus the difficulty of reach the 6th string as well as doing like a spider walk pentatonic exercise. It is a real struggle for me being just picked up the guitar for 3 months and found out my limitation. I am working thru it though. Thanks for the all tutorial videos .

I see you have a GR pick up on that Strat. I had one on my PRS Custom 24 and I used the sticky strips to anchor it and had too many problem's with it staying calibrated right. I didn't want to screw it down as I wanted to use it on other guitar's in the future ( plus I didn't want the holes in my guitar). Have you used the sticky pad's before and if so was there anything you did to fix that problem?

There ARE rules. And there are manuals, too! Guitar has been around for centuries in one form or another. And the masters had rules. And the rules where there to help students avoid learning bad habits. Of course, there are so many hacks today that it's pretty hard to find the "rules" amidst the sea of bullshit. But I suppose that can be said for nearly anything these daze.

6th worst way to learn guitar is... take lessons for years starting at around age eight from a music store owner that played SAX. Same guy sold my mom and dad a Kay Spanish-style guitar with a neck as narrow as a piece of spaghetti and a mile thick. Oh and... no truss rod so in a year the action was around five inches at the 12th fret.

There's a little guy named Eddie Van Halen that does a lot of holding his pick with 3 fingers. You see him doing it quite often. Not saying it's a good technique, just saying that it won't ruin you if you do it.

There is no such thing as correct or incorrect guitar playing. It works for you, sure, that's great, but that doesn't mean any other method is deemed a "bad habit". I learned to play without anchoring my right hand, but years later started doing so, as it gives me more precise picking, does not effect my tone, and does not at all hinder my speed like you so claim.

If it helps i was taught to pick that way, elbow needs to be higher up on the back of the body, not almost in line with the neck.Andrews elbow position is spot on.
So your hand is coming down at an angle to the strings. This also makes muting easier. Thumb wants to be pointing down, again not in line with the neck . This will angle the pick so it will slide across the strings much smoother. Again you can see that in Andrews hand. I point my thumb down a little more but everyone's different.
It also makes strumming smoother as well.
I'd also say it's worth trying different picks if you haven't done so. As you know they come in a variety of sizes, shapes and thickness. I prefer them quite stiff where as when i first started i liked them quite flexible. I find i have better control with thicker ones. The amount of pick protruding from your hand i think is a personal thing. I have very little.
I'd also say it's fun to try different items as picks, i forgot to mention in my comment above with the knuckle problem i used to use buttons and coins because when they spun round it didn't matter. I still use them now. Coins do hammer the strings a bit...got that idea from a certain Mr May...not in person i hasten to add. I wish..
