Dude, don’t listen to some of these jerkoffs. I like your shop. I’d rather work there than at some huge dealership. It comfy and cozy. If that’s the atmosphere you like then it leads to good stress free days. Your on your own and doing your thing. Good for you friend. Remember something, don’t spend your life chasing paper. Chase your dreams instead. Work to live not live to work. 55-60/week is enough.

i mean when you are self-employed, atleast in finland, you have to work much much more than if you were average joe with monday-friday 8-16 with union benefits, 3 month long summer vacations and safety nets.
its often the chasing dreams that can cost you to work from dawn to dusk every day with no vacations.

Never Gonnatell there is a lot of stress that comes with owning a repair shop. A lot of stress is created by the way some people run their shop. Customers can be a pain in the ass but if your honest and up front about everything that helps a lot.
On the plus side when you wake up in the morning when you work for yourself you are much happier. You don’t question yourself if you should call in sick because your happy to work for yourself. You can make more money in one day than a job will pay you in a week. No more boss to yell at you about anything just your customers lol.
I had a repair shop before but I had problems with the landlord and I had a partner that wasn’t a problem but I’ll never have a partner again. I’m opening a new shop next month. I’m nervous and excited at the same time but I can’t wait to be working for myself again. I’m tired of working for places that rip people off and don’t run the business honestly.

@Never Gonnatell the stress comes with having to manage all of your expenses and track everything for taxes. also if you have any employees, you need to be monitoring for any bullshit 24 7.

It takes a special person to have and continue having their own business. One has to love what they do. If you don't, it will be a hassle and be stressful and one would not last long. Many people try to start their own business only because they want to look good...and because they think it's easy money...lol boy are they wrong! These types find out real fast how hard it is and they end up giving up within the first year. It takes a lot of hours per day and a lot of work and no play. But the rewards are fantastic later on. My hat is off to you!

NEVER LOOK BACK!! DON'T LISTEN TO NEGATIVITY!! YOU HAVE CONTROL OF YOUR FUTURE NOW!! KEEP GOING! I WISH YOU GREAT SUCCESS!! What you are doing is no different than what you did when you were working for someone else. Except you get all the glory now. No more incompetent management, no corporate rules, and most important.....NO MIDDLE MAN. GO GO GO!!! If I could give you any advice, it would be this. Specialize in one or two brands that are similar to each other. You must start somewhere when you are on your own. But when you grow to your comfort level, specialize in 1 make and model or at least 2-3. This will alleviate a lot of stress and your work will become easier as time runs due to the fact that cars alike are a bit easier to diagnose.

Need advice from experienced shop owners/mechanics!??
I’ve been a mechanic at a dealership for a long time, nearly 15 years and at the age of 36 now. At this point, I have a choice of building a home with a nice size garage Attached (to save money) to put 1 lift and run my business(although zoning is the issue sadly) or build a house and have a detached garage with steel building 30x40 and run a business out of there (more expensive but more room, zoning still may be an issue) Or Try to build a steel building at a business location where zoning is Not an issue , but i would have to take out a loan obviously and finding a location and land may be problem. Also at that point, I can’t pick and choose what I wanna work on which will require me to have employee(s) which then stress level goes up and other big expenses keep rolling monthly.. But in the end, once it’s paid off, I would own the building and it would be an investment.. What are your thoughts and advice? Really appreciate honest opinions from people who were in the same situation as I am. Thank you.

What you are doing is the best way to go! I worked a full time job and worked on the side 4 times a week on cars in my garage. I was on Nextdoor only. I worked on BMW and Toyota. I made a killing. I had no overhead. All profit. I had no lift at all. I would put cars on jack stands and only could park it half way into my garage. When I got rave reviews after 1 year. People did not care about my small garage. People would always tell me to open my own garage up. I was offered to buy one. No thanks. I did not want to worry about paying rent. I ran my shop at home for 2 years. I am too busy working overtime in a new job to work on cars in the side anymore. Nice video..

Mike, i think you nailed the important decision for efficiency (aka profitability): specialization by focusing on repeat jobs. Every new job / car has a learning curve. But the car models depend your neighborhood. In CA Toyota and Honda are everywhere. Toyota also are much easier to work on than BMW (I’d love to hear your comments).

Dude, I hear ya. Been working for GM dealerships my whole life (since 1983) and always (and still) work at home in my single lift garage by myself after work (just got upstairs from resealing a front diff on a 2002 GMC Sierra). It's tough doing everything yourself: Working after a full day of work and running for parts, taking calls all day and trying to remember whose car needs what . I always have so much work and it gets to me sometimes. I am like you: I don't have time to get sick or sleep in but sometimes you have to take a step back. I ain't getting no younger. A lot of times, I'll look at my beautiful wife and we'll go out or a friend will stop by and we'll hang out and I'll put work aside. The kids are all grown and my wife babysits so I don't have as much pressure on me but I missed a LOT when I was younger. I was always working because I was the only income for the 6 of us but trust me: Smell the roses man! Those cars will still be there -

What an inspiration I am a young trainnee mechanic at Lexus and hopefully one day run my own garage. I wasn't sure on how I was going to do it or if it would even work out but after watching this I have confidence. Goal is to complete my training and do what you do stick at the dealer for a couple of years for experience then broadcast my services.

One minute in and I subscribed. Your work space isn’t the biggest, but it’s space management that counts. My first job in the industry was in a three bay shop. Two lifts and an alignment rack and we definitely cranked out everything and anything we could which a lot of times meant working outside if needed. Looking forward to many vids to come.

Hey guy I know this is an old video but there is a quick way to decide if the evap is leaking - get the ac running and up to pressure - then shut the thing down and just waite a couple of minutes - then just put it sniffer into an outlet vent and turn the fan on low - the freon is heavier than air and will lay in the bottom of the housing till u bump the fan and force it out the vent to ur sniffer... then look up the hours to change the evaporator and double it... I am a semi retired one man shop myself...

I absolutely agree with you. I did go to tech school at my community college for 2 years, graduated with some ASEs and went to work at a dealership prob like yours for a few years. I had a friend, who was very very young who opened his own body shop and was doing very well. That gave me serious inspiration knowing that it can be done. (when your in school no body tells you you can make your own money, they want you to be dealer guys at least where i went.) I knew i wanted to do my own thing so i told every single person i knew or met that i am their new mechanic and i will beat anyones rate. After a while it took off and i was forced to quit my job at toyota to keep up with my demand. I can talk forever about this stuff for example i had full insurance coverage working at a dealership now I do not. no more paycheck everyweek. If you dont have work you dont get paid. I wish you all the luck in the world and any questions feel free to ask.

I did tires for 3 months nd than i quit nd found a job that does tires nd auto repair than i quit after a year of that nd got a job working in a transmission shop that lasted 5 years nd now im doing my mobile mechanic hustle.

Those 2015+ Jeep Liberty/Patriots are f**kn ridiculous you have to recover and disconnect the refrigerant and AC Compressor lines just to change the Alternator 😂 i hated when they came in brand new under 20k Miles all with faulty alternator Overunning Pullys, theyd just snap whatever connection to the stator like a twig n it would just free spool on the pully, not driving the stator or charging the battery (obviously).
No more Rental car work for me haha (i hope atleast) because it was nice 'verifying the repair' driving the Camaro SS/Audi A4 and my favorite the Infiniti Q60 (which smokes the dog piss out of the Camaro SS, trust me 😂) along with a slew of other nice ones.
Anyway thats my 2 cents essay.
Btw if you get any 2016+ Hyundai or Kia Sonota/Optima, they leak at the condensor, faulty mounting i guess causes line to crack @ discharge condensor port around 25-30k miles

The joke was to work in a shop like this - all you need is a house/garage with tools and you are set. There are no qualifications to needed to work on cars out of your own house... What I was told from my friend that's a mechanic is you really need to love working on cars, with the new technology that's coming out you need to constantly be learning and there so much to know, plus the work is extremely taxing mentally and physically imo if ur looking for side jobs I'd start a moving company, lawn care, painting co, pressure washing seal coating etc
