    Most police cars dont drive as many miles as people think. The main thing is the idle time. 6 hours of idle and 2 hours or driving. EVs are perfect for this type of work.

    • @mhigham1
      @mhigham1 25 днів тому +25

      Exactly. I did a project years ago for Michigan state police data logging their cars. They would idle for hours and maybe get driven 50 miles over a 10 hour shift. Some highway patrol cars would get driven more but it was nothing to see a car log 50 hours and 50 miles in a week.

    My dad was a cop but he retired in the '90s. I remember on his Caprice that he drove as a company car, it was unmarked but still equipped as a cop car, there was a button to deactivate the dashboard lighting, so you could sit in a running car but not have any light inside it which would ruin your night vision on a stake out. I have to assume that you can also defeat the daytime running lights on a modern police car, and I wonder if they're going to give them a switch to turn off the pedestrian warning audible signal.

    I'm thinking these would be great for urban police and in cities or towns. Maybe not so much for highway patrol and such. Then again, not sure how much a typical highway cruiser actually drives per day. As long as they charge it up at night, they should be fine. Or if there are charging stations around, they can charge it on their lunch break or something. Guess it depends on the area. There are probably a ton of charging stations in places like California... but not so much in say, South Dakota.

    I have a question about actual miles driven versus EV miles available.
    For instance, I have a 2016 Fiat 500 E. It estimates my range will be 85 miles. But in practice, if I drive on the freeway, and drive with any amount of speed, it’s really closer to 65 miles, and if I do that, those last 5 miles are white knuckling because I’m at 15 to 18% Remaining, and if it drops below 12 then the vehicle goes into slow mode.
    I’m willing to bat that a police vehicle is going to be driven harder than my Fiat. So if you drive this blazer on freeways all day at 70 mph, what does that 200 mile real world range become? If I reset on my experience, then it’s more like 170 miles which is significantly more than the 80 you’ve quoted as the average miles driven.
    Here’s a thing though: if 80 miles is the average miles driven, that would mean that some police cars drive less, and some drive more. So what is the main, the median, and the mode? Even so, I’d be surprised if they were very many police officers more than that. However, if you did, you might not be able to use the last 10 to 20 miles of range for police level work. In other words, it would be foolish to start a pursuit in a gas police car when the fuel gauge reads empty. But if you had to do that in an emergency, you could theory drive at full power until you ran out of fuel. And for most vehicles of that size, you have between 20 and 40 miles of range remaining when the fuel gauge reads empty.
    in an electric police car, do they make allowances for this? Do they allow you to drive faster? I would assume no, because it’s not just about how much charge you have, but how fast the charge leaves the battery.
    To say that I don’t think you’re getting three shifts out of one charge on these. More likely at best you’re getting two, and you probably be wise to only do one, keeping the vehicle at 80%.

    Another thing that I can complain about a lot, not just about electric cars, but about every modern electric device: can we stop this business of measuring the batteries full charge, but telling consumers and users they shouldn’t go past 80% of that?
    If it’s going to ruin the battery go past 80%, or 90%, or whatever, then make that 100%. There’s software in there that can judge how much capacity you actually have, why are we playing this game?
    To me, smart phones and electric electric cars should follow the rule of gas cars. Full is whatever is safely the most, and the case of these kinds of batteries about 85%, and empty should be at about 15%. But we should stop telling drivers those percentages. Because it doesn’t help, all it does is make you think that there’s something wrong with the car. Plus we shouldn’t be in a situation where doing what makes the most sense based in the information given an hurt the car.
    Then as the vehicle is used, the system can make allowances for people usage. For instance, if the driver uses the built-in GPS, and getting down to 15% would have the driver be 2 miles from home, the software could compensate for this. Either changing when it says the vehicle is empty, or offering reserve charging for the driver to get the rest of the way home.
    On top of this, as the vehicle gets older, if some of the capacity is lost, the system can choose to charge past 85%. Of course this is a tricky choice, only because doing so may accelerate the degradation. But I’m sure there’s a way in software to determine the best choices, or else give the owner the option of override the limits by going into a menu on each charge cycle individually

    So sad that you guys still have not understood that people out there deserve these so-called upgraded drivetrains. Everyone should get them, and then the police just buys the cars from that range. Must be very hard...

      What a bunch of absurd nonsense. That will never happen because the range capacity is way more than a single shift. Just the reserve range alone is more than enough for a car chase. It's funny you believe your bad assumption is plausible.

    Speaking of GM: back in the day, you could only get the 454 V-8 on the 2wd Suburban. Cause who would want more power AND more ability to connect that power to the ground at the same time, that'd be stupid..?

  • @garygeorge9648

    Add all the electrical equipment and that battery doesn't last as long. If they get in a chase it won't last as long and will have to be recharged sooner which takes them off the street. I know you are a EV fanboy but at least look at all the variables. Also take into account how hard EV's are are on tires as an added expense.

  • @herbfst
    @herbfst 25 днів тому +1

    3secs in and I know the 81miles avg. Is meaningless when compared to an EV. They would go through the battery like there is no tomorrow. They will have the AC and the heat blasting all days and will kill the range. There needs to be charging at key spots where the officers sit anyway and have a quick release if they need to respond. Then they can sit charged and ready to go.

      These can for sure make it to the evenings to charge overnight. Cars use far less power for HVAC and accessories than driving down the road.

      LOL what a bunch of absurd false assumption. FYI EV Police cars have been in service for several years now. They do perfect fine and there is no really range and battery capacity problems when you have 75kwh or more. You are just making up absurd assumption with zero reasoning. Real world operations has proven it works perfectly fine.

    • @MaxPower-11
      @MaxPower-11 24 дні тому

      Not nesessarily. It depends how they’re used. If you figure cops drive about 80 miles per shift, then even at 80% capacity they should be able to pull two shifts a day, plus A/C and heat (assuming it has a heat pump) on a single charge.

      He didn't say that necessarily. He said that they had long shifts - and critically, there was no rest for the car. It went right back out with the next person.
      The solution to that is to spend some amount of your shift at a charger. On a long shift, you have to spend a decent amount of time on break. If you can spend that at a charger, that's probably perfectly fine. Even better if it prevents them from inefficiently charging to 95% all the time.
