Pyrgos
The village of Pyrgos, also written as Pirgos, is located fairly centrally on the Greek island of Santorini. The distance to the airport is five kilometers, as is the capital Fira, and it is a three-kilometer drive to the touristy Kamari on the coast. A village to stroll around, browse for a nice souvenir and have something to eat in one of the Greek taverns. The walking paths up the mountain are sometimes a bit steep and have some steps.

Worth seeing in Pyrgos are the churches of Agios Nikolaos Theotokaki from the 10th century and the large church Panagia Kasteli from the 16th century. There are more than 40 churches and chapels spread across the village. On the way to the top of the hill you will pass shops, terraces and a beautiful square. A few kilometers from the village are the wineries of Venetsanos and Santo Wines in Megalochori. During your holiday on Santorini, a tip to combine a wine tasting with a visit to the traditional village of Pyrgos.
Pyrgos has been an officially registered monument since 1995 and was built on and against a hill. After a walk to the church Panagia Eisodia (Panagia Kasteli) you have a beautiful view over the valley of Messaria with the white villages of Fira and Oia in the background. At the highest point of Pyrgos, the monastery of the prophet Elias is worth seeing. Kantouni restaurant is a tip to eat and so is Metaxi Mas in the neighboring village of Exo Gonia.

Pyrgos
Het dorpje Pyrgos, ook wel als Pirgos geschreven, ligt vrij centraal op het Griekse eiland Santorini. De afstand tot de luchthaven bedraagt vijf kilometer, net als naar het hoofdstadje Fira, en naar het toeristische Kamari aan de kust is het drie kilometer rijden. Een dorp om lekker rond te slenteren, te snuffelen voor een leuk souvenir en wat te gaan eten in één van de Griekse tavernes. De wandelpaadjes de berg op zijn soms wat steil en met de nodige traptreden.

Bezienswaardig in Pyrgos zijn de kerken Agios Nikolaos Theotokaki uit de 10e eeuw en de grote kerk Panagia Kasteli uit de 16e eeuw. Verspeid over het dorp liggen in totaal meer dan 40 kerken en kapelletjes. Onderweg naar de top van de heuvel kom je wandelend langs winkeltjes, terrasjes en een fraai pleintje. Op een paar kilometer afstand van het dorpje liggen de wijnhuizen van o.a. Venetsanos en Santo Wines in Megalochori. Tijdens je vakantie op Santorini een tip om een wijnproeverij te combineren met een bezoek aan het traditionele dorpje Pyrgos.

Na een wandeling naar de kerk Panagia Eisodia (Panagia Kasteli) heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de vallei van Messaria met op de achtergrond de witte dorpen Fira en Oia. Op het hoogste punt van Pyrgos is het klooster van de profeet Elias bezienswaardig. Kantouni restaurant is een tip om te gaan eten en Metaxi Mas in het naburige dorp Exo Gonia ook.
