    George me lad, I'm after watching this three times and meant to tell you about an idea for shaving weight on the Lotus. I'm probably late to the party with this idea, but here goes:
    After working on aircraft for years, I've seen my share of *lightening holes*. Nothing at all do with Thor, they're used to shave weight on a lot of aircraft structural components like spars and ribs without sacrificing strength. Indeed the engineering science crowd might argue it is even stronger.
    A quick googling will bring up how-to's and tools, but the basics are cut a hole, clean it up as much as possible, then flare it much like you would for say, a fuel line. From my experience, the cleaner the hole, the better the flare. Now let's leave that phrase as it lies.
    But needless to say, I'm hoping it'll be useful on the Lotus in (what I estimate) about 6-8 places at least. Keep up the great work, and stay safe.

      Don't worry David, The Commitments and the other films in the trilogy [The Snapper and The Van], have passed into Irish folklore. They're almost part of the Irish right of passage. We could all probably recite the scripts. Thanks for the shout from Texas and the love :)

    Chicago for a day and I've just realised I've seen this episode before...the mosaic of previous episodes that fills the screen after you finish one cropped the "1" from the "12" and I clicked on it thinking it was ep 2..... oh well, its so good I watched it twice!

    George these episodes are just getting better with every one. Big thumbs up on your progress. I have a 1990 Vogue SE that's been on the to do list for a few years now. It needs inner wings, sills and rear arches doing - your methods make it look so easy. Michael.

    Excellent video! My father is currently restoring his 1978 Esprit S2 in Diamond silver with the same interior, and he's at about the same point in the restoration. He's thankful for your videos as a reference for his project.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому

      We're brothers in arms then me and your dad. My cert from Lotus says there were only 8 produced in silver with the red and black interior [if memory serves]. Where in the world are you Swaggimus?

    • @MrGman636
      @MrGman636 7 років тому

      George Karellas The restoration is being done in Chicago, Illinois. I mistook the interior photos you had in episode 06 (of the dark green crushed-velvet with black seats) as the one your car had, since that's the interior my dad's car actually has.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому

      I love a black interior and I'd actually prefer that on my car but it's going back to factory spec for sure. I think it's fitting. Your dad may know this already but there were no Esprits with green Marcasite [the crushed velvet like material]. The green colour is what black Marcasite turned to after years of fading. So your dad's interior was all black :)

    • @MrGman636
      @MrGman636 7 років тому

      George Karellas Funnily enough, he gets annoyed when people say the original interior color is green, and he's chosen the proper original color, and used the photos you posted as the final confirmation that that's the correct color. He's going to be looking up your Patron as well soon. Do you have an estimated finish date for your car? I know it can be difficult to gauge, especially with multiple cars in the work (our other project cars can attest to that), but he's looking at finishing within the next 6 months to a year.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому

      Oh! Tell him I didn't mean any offence, was only going on what I've heard. :) Did he get a cert of provenance from Lotus? I'd love to think I could get the Esprit done in six months or even a year. Would be amazing to have it done for summer 2018 but that might be far fetched, who knows. I'm cautious about setting any deadlines for SOUP. Part of what I'm trying not to do is dramatise it like every car show these days. What's the other project?

    A few years back, I purchased a ragged 94 6 speed Corvette (hardly a classic) and I fixed it up on a shoestring budget over the next 2 years. I dare say it was getting pretty respectable by the time I had to sell it! For some reason, the lotus' somewhat iffy starting condition reminds me of that car alot. Man do I miss it...Keep up the good work for all of us who have loved and lost! By the way, I cracked up when you described and replayed the floor covering segment :)

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому

      Don't know a lot about the Corvette but I do know Lotus developed the LT5 engine used in the same era Corvette as yours, in the ZR-1 anyway. Maybe residual Lotusness rubbed off and that's were the reminiscence is coming from ;) So to begin with your car was a bit rough like mine, there's worse to come yet though with the Esprit, I'd say it'll win the abused race in the end. Thanks for the kind words Matt. Did you replace the vette with something interesting?

    • @mattslimmer8633
      @mattslimmer8633 7 років тому

      Not really at first...a rough Infiniti G35. Fortunately, I now have a Pontiac G8 GT aka Holden VE Commodore. Still not the Vette but kind of like a 4 door Vette.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому

      Had a look, didn't realise Pontiac was gone, or that it was named after an Indian Chief, or that it was GM but now I'm showing how little I know :) That's a lot of motor in a four door saloon. Must be fun?

    I love your series and the video making is top notch. I don't know how you have so much time to do the dismantling and video production! I have always wanted to know film makers make the stop film animation? What's your secret? :)

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому +1

      I don't have enough time [and I've dedicated myself to it full time] but I'm just getting by with two weeks between episodes. Not easy! There's no secret to time lapse/stop motion; say you're removing a bolt - you turn it a little and take a snap, turn it a little more and take a snap... and you keep doing that until it's out. My videos are produced at 24 frames [snaps] a second, so it takes 24 photos to make a second of video. Demanding. But worth it!

    George, Another great video the standard of the content and filming is excellent! I could really do with you showing me some basic editing as i have to do all my videos in one shot and miss a lot of detail. You know how to contact me, Take care Dave.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому

      What type of computer do you use Dave, Windows or Mac? Start playing with Movie Maker or similar [Windows] or iMovie [Mac] to learn to make simple cuts in footage so you can drop in close up footage. You can still shoot your one long take, but then shoot cutaways of all the things you referenced and edit them into the clip. This is something only you can get comfortable with whether the pointers are in person or remote.

    • @ClassicCarCave
      @ClassicCarCave 7 років тому

      George, We have Mac! computers and i have found the iMovie icon in launchpad i will give it a go! Cheers Dave.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому

      That's a big win Dave, iMovie is easy to use. You import your media, then move it around on screen in layers just like courses of bricks. The upmost brick hides whatever it's sitting over, i.e. you've a course of red brick and then somewhere along the course you place a yellow on top. The red bricks are your long take sitting on the bottom course, then you drop in your close ups [the yellow bricks] here and there on top where appropriate. Make sense?

      Interesting thread C, we have my suster daily driving a 230E but the one thing it's missing is cruise so I'm jealous. It was never spec'd here so haven't been able to find a setup to graft in. I did due diligence when my sister told me she'd like a classic W123 wagon and a much heralded expert told me the parts for SLS are very hard to get now, so I put her off and we got her a saloon instead. It's lovely and working great for her, but she's still disappointed and now seeing your efforts I'm not so happy with the "expert". Thanks a million mate, and for the return inspiration. [and if you happen on a nivomat system or any cruise I could make work let me know]

    • @bencosgrave6927
      @bencosgrave6927 7 років тому +1

      He George, I drive a W123 very regularly with 227k on it. The cruise from a 300SE/SL could be adapted to fit since its a similar engine but 2 more cylinders. I rebuilt the SLS on one last year without problems and Ive since been told that W124 parts can be adapted.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому +1

      Great tip Ben. It's called Nivomat isn't it? I love how simple it is and I'm keeping my eye out for a car to pinch a setup from. Great news about the SLS too, I've a feeling my sister will go for a W123T eventually. Thanks mate.

    • @bencosgrave6927
      @bencosgrave6927 7 років тому

      Actually the Nivomat is the name for the self leveling system that appeared on the W108. These cars have 2 steel springs in the normal place but an additional hydraulic compensator horizontally in the centre of the axle which took place of the central spring used on previous models with the low pivot swing axle design. The compensator is basically a large stand alone hydraulic strut. There are no pumps or pipes and if it leaks its finished !
      The S123/S124 & V126 system is called SLS as it is an hydraulic pump driven system with leveling valves, spheres and hydraulic actuators in place of shock aborbers, with associated pipework.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  7 років тому +1

      Nivomat? I meant to say Tempomat, was thinking about the cruise system. I'm not getting into changing the suspension on a Benz just yet ;). The Nivomat system is not unlike the Boge strut in the rear of classic Range Rovers, same principle. I killed one by ignoring dead dampers in the yellow RR whilst in Greece and the Boge unit gave up after being bounced to death. Still a little put out that I was warned off the SLS, but sometimes experts get way over protective about a particular model and put it on a pedestal. This guy was very vocal about how a W123 shouldn't be a daily car. Ridiculous.
