Here's a photo of the slave whip that Susan was talking about as being the artifact that touched her the most: www.hinicetomeetyou.com/nmaahc

For me, it was those shackles. Small, for the ankles of a child. I pretty much lost it, right there. I have tears in my eyes right now, just remembering them.
Excellent interview -- all your Smithsonian ones are, actually, but this one so far is my favourite.

Loving the series about the Smithsonian. I knew a lot of work goes on behind the scenes in any museum, but never knew it was THIS much.

It takes me FOREVER to go through a museum because I am constantly thinking about the behind-the-scenes people like her. SOMEONE had to decide how to put these things on display and write the text, choose the pictures, build the models. I always end up reading every word on every display sign for every artifact. I often take an hour to go through each room. I am as fascinated with the museum as a whole as much as i am about the items on display in it. Glad to see this series of vids about the Smithsonian. Love it.

Perhaps the coolest “maker/DIY/design” job ever...thanks Adam for making this interview happen.. I think you only scratched the surface of a very extensive set of stories about the production work going on in the Smithsonian..

Great interview from Adam. Powerful and great respect shown for the choice of object by Susan. She clearly has a very multifaceted and complicated role to play in educating. Nothing but respect for her. I'll never get to visit but it's great to know we have people like Susan.

Why does Adams narration in the opening sound like an extremely young tween-age version of Adam?

Love this series on the Smithsonian! Thank you for the behind the scenes look. Objects can have such power. Recently I visited Fort Ticonderoga and the display of personalized powder horns used by known soldiers on both sides was very moving.

5:58 well, that kind of is the point of user testing, to find out whether it works or not before whatever you are testing is finished. When developing a Video Game you have artists and programmes and designers that all work on their own schedules, and if something does not work in tests, these schedules have to be adjusted. That's just the nature of user testing projects that are bigger than one person...

Conserving a segregated rail car or anything from the Civil rights Era and definitely from the period of American slavery would be a disturbing couple weeks/months.
It's definitely better than letting it decay away or destroying it, but man that would be rough.

So casually, in fact, that it was obvious he expected his audience to know what he was referring to.
And also, where do you think the New York Giants FB team got their name from? This area is packed full of farmers that dug them up in the early years of America.
Miami really has dolphins, Green bay really had many meatpackers (The Packers), Texas Longhorns really have Longhorn cattle. Get the idea..... So, any new thoughts Mr. Funny man?
