    NOTE: I no longer recommend these due to the numerous issues that have arisen with other rifles in this line.

      Don't believe everything you hear or read about Century Arms and their US made AK Rifles. Some people are just haters. Report what you have found with your Rifle and all will be fine with your review.

      Metal doesn’t lie and its CAST its not mean to be cast trunion thats why they beat headspace fast. Not saying your rifle is not reliable matter of fact ras 47 has good accuracy but the rifle will fall apart within 5k rounds the rifle’s service life is very short and it will eventually be unsafe to use. I can guarantee you that.

      OreGear Awesome man thanks, ill look into it. Also all things considered I am stuck between getting the C39V2 and the RAS47. Im leaning toward the RAS because of cost, please help me make a concrete decision. Thanks again!!

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  9 років тому

      ***** I would go for the RAS47. If you plan on using this as a SHTF rifle then weight is everything. Having 1.5 pounds that you can use to carry something else is very valuable. The quality difference between a stamped and milled receiver is negligible.

      OreGear Noted good sir. Real quick, what are thoughts about getting an RPK? Im thinking about grabbing one of those as well. As you can tell I'm new to the AK world, being a vet all I've been into lately are my AR's.

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  9 років тому

      To be honest I don't have any experience with RPKs. My understanding is that they are more or less identical other than a longer and heavier barrel and a more overall heavy build. Unless you plan on making it full auto and staying in one place, I'm not sure how practical they are. As a fellow vet I'm sure you understand the importance of gear weight. If you're going to be humping a gun over terrain, the RPK will get really heavy really really fast.

    • @damnitriggs3921
      @damnitriggs3921 9 років тому

      Gotcha, and yeah man if I wasn't planning on hunkering down where I'm at I wouldn't even be looking at an RPK haha. I recently moved to my current location for the exact reason of not having to lug a bunch of shit around if in fact SHTF. Thanks for your time man. Stay safe and God Bless!

    Just so you know, about that mag that doesn't fit, about 90% of the time it isn't actually rubbing against the center support rivet, it's probably rubbing on the rear of the mag-well against where the selector stop plate protrudes into the mag-well opening. But don't mess with it.

    +kilos seen The Tapco side folding stock should work, however I would do a little more research into those before purchasing one. I've heard of a lot of issues with those regarding how secure the lock up is when the stock is unfolded.

    would you recommend this for home defense? thanks

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  8 років тому +16

      Depending on where you live, I don't think AKs are ideal for home defense. Unless you have a vast amount of space between your property and your neighbors' property, I wouldn't use a 7.62x39 for home defense. The round is more than capable of leaving your house and entering your neighbors house. If you live in the country with nothing close by, I'd probably recommend a different AK. With a lot of the news coming out about these rifles, I no longer recommend them.

    ~So far, I love my Century Arms VSKA AK-47, an all US made Rifle. I'm hoping with the S7 Tool Steel they're now using on the two Trunnions and Bolt Carrier they have corrected their major material problems.
    ~I wish Century Arms much success in the future as well as Palmetto State Armory who also makes all US made AK Rifles. We are Americans after all and we can do it.
    ~I've been applying a lot of Ballistol and letting it soak-in on the Maple Furniture of my VSKA to give the wood a little more ability to withstand abuse. Plus it darkens the wood a bit too.
    ~I think my LGS where I buy the majority of my firearms must "hand pick" their new guns because every one I've bought from them has been good. Yes, even my VSKA.

    The rivet scratching the mag is something I just noticed. Its not a deal breaker for me either way, and besides if I really need to I can take it out and shoot a new rivet to replace it. I don't anticipate having to do that any time in the future. I also don't give a shit about the rivet scratching the paint job on my Croatian mags. I didn't buy this rifle to be pretty. I brought a good old American built combat rifle to fight. That's what AKs are for.
    Its a home and civil defense weapon. I intend to run it like one.

  • @rmwtsou
    @rmwtsou 7 років тому

    The only reason I didn't buy one of these is because of its glaring lack of a cleaning rod. I know it is purely cosmetic and some would even say trivial, but Century Arms should know that there are customers who just want the "correct" traditional AK look above all else. Not too crazy about the "new and improved" notched safety level either. I went with a High Standard Red Wood Stock AK instead. It is probably a lesser quality rifle but it does have a cleaning rod, an intact safety lever, a bayonet lug and it looks like a proper AK47.

    What was the safety you put on? I really like it. Also I have this gun, why is there not a slot in the rear sight? How do you aim with that? Granted this is my first AK. I would recommend putting your top furniture back on and doing a video on how to remove the furniture for this gunbb

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  8 років тому

      +mitchell baldwin It's a safety from Krebs Custom. They are a huge improvement of ergonomics on AK47s. I'm not sure what you mean by no slot. Every rifle I've looked at has had a rear sight notch. I may do a video on ultimak installation in the future, however I know there are already a lot of videos on that already.

    Had mines for about 5yrs and not one hiccup. Since day one I field stripped it, cleaned and lubed it before going to the range and do the same after every trip to the range. I have not had one issue and just like with all my guns if you properly clean and lube your gun, and you have to use grease also it will last you a long time.

    What is the overall length? I've read online that it is 37.25" but I can't see how it's 3 inches longer than other akm based rifles which are around 34.25.

      +OreGear -most of the videos I have see about this gun is they all said when u shoot couple of thousands round the gun will go to shit part on the gun will break down! I thought this gun make in the USA, so is supposed to be good? how about you have u have any problems with this gun? how many round have u shoot already?

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  8 років тому

      The gun is made in the US but it's made using inferior building methods than some Eastern European countries. Most of the RAS47s will probably be fine, but they certainly have had their issues. Mine has been mostly fine other than shooting off my slant brake and my front sight being loose. I have only around 1,800 rounds through mine. I'd recommend going with something like a DDI or even a WASR over one of these.

    Did you have any problem installing the Ultimak gas tube rail with wood handguard underneath? I remember someone mentioning that it doesn't fit, or difficult to make it fit, or something.

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  8 років тому

      +Ryan Huh I did have to do a bit of sanding on the inside of the lower hand guard to get it on. If you skip to 10:00, you can actually see the crack in the lower hand guard from me forcing it on.

    • @ryanhuh697
      @ryanhuh697 8 років тому

      +OreGear I'm sorry what happened to your handguard. Still, that is one nice optimal setup. I kinda hoped I could do the same.

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  8 років тому

      It's holding together well. I half expect it to come flying apart in a drill with all of the stress on it. Until then I'm going to rock it as is. It's my fault anyway, I got lazy and wanted to stop sanding before it actually fit properly.

    Great review--- just found your channel via Slickguns, and very impressed with your production qualities--- comprehensive info, organization, comparisons, pacing, framing, narration, target analysis-- the list of standouts goes on and on, and did I mention that on-air personality-wise you have a great low-key vibe? No flattery intended, just the facts! Of course I'm left wondering: where is all the edgy, pounding shock-metal background music we expect from a gun channel, at least at the beginning and end? (kidding:) So: new fan in the house, subscribed, thumbs up, thank you, and mos def looking forward to more youtube goodness from OreGear!

    Solid, thorough review... Now that you've had it a while, what's your opinion on the RAS47? What's the round count so far and how much of it has been the cheaper Tula?? Any problems at all running that ammo?? I'm considering selling my Mini 30 for one of these. Love the Mini but it tends to be a little picky with ammo. Doesn't like Tula much at all...

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  9 років тому +1

      ***** I still really like the RAS 47. I'm at around 1200-1300 rounds with it. I would say at least half, probably more has been Tula. I've had zero issues with the rifle since that very first day I shot it dry. My only issues with the rifle are the lack of cleaning rod/cleaning kit, and it's inability to seat one of my mags, and difficulty seating a few others (I understand this issue has been fixed with newer rifles). All that said, my Arsenal is going to be my go to war gun because it suffers from none of those issues. I may even be selling my RAS in order to fund future projects.
      Hope that helped! Thanks for watching.

    Hey I'm thinking of getting this rifle because 1) I live in NJ(behind enemy lines,lol) and this rifle falls into the nonrestrictive category because it lacks the bayonet lug, 2) is affordable and 3) saigas and vepr's have dried up.
    So my question is, is it worth it? Also how is it holding up after hundreds of rounds? I've been reading some horror stories and people complained about the cast trunnion,....have you experienced any problems??

    Great review, thanks for taking the time to make it. I'm currently in the market for an Ak, and I'm really liking this RAS47, but also I'm torn between this, and a Yugo M70.
    Although this was a very high quality review, I still have no final decision.
    What do you guys think?

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  9 років тому

      Travis L. Yugo M70s are good guns. My only issue with Yugos is the availability of aftermarket parts. Yugos don't take standard AKM furniture. You have to ensure you get Yugo specific parts. I just recently did a bunch of work on a friends M70 and some of the furniture that he had me install still needed fitting to make it work on his gun. One pro of the M70 over the RAS is the fact that the M70 has a slot for a cleaning rod. If you plan on keeping your AK totally stock, the M70 is not a bad option, but if you want something you can upgrade and make more usable, I would recommend the RAS.

    I’m sorry to be the one to tell you, that RAS 47 is junk, it will be okay if you shoot once in awhile but if you run it hard, not so much!! Oregear,about how many rounds do you think have been shot through it?have you inspected the cast trunnion(both front and back)especially front where the bolt lugs lock in.also the end of the bolt that the hammer hits for peening or mushrooming.Some folks reporting problems due to cast parts not being properly heat treated.......thanks

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  9 років тому

      +ELad Neb I haven't kept as close of tabs on my round count since this video, however if I had to hazard a conservative estimate, I'd say I'm between 1,200 and 1,400 rounds. So nothing too ground breaking. I've slowed considerably on this rifle since getting my Arsenal up and running. As far as the trunnion, I've been following Rob Ski's reports pretty closely. I haven't noticed any issues with mine up to this point. I have some slight mushrooming on the rear of the bolt carrier, however nothing beyond what you'd expect at this round count. I may film an update video tomorrow so I can show exactly what mine looks like at this point.
      Thanks for your question!

      +Broz ski The sights were pretty much on right out of the box. I had to just make some small, fine adjustments. As mentioned in the video though, the front sight is probably not zeroed anymore because it's pretty loose in the front sight block.

    Thanks for the review! I was really excited when I heard about the RAS47, but I'm concerned about some of the QC problems that are being reported. It's good to know that your gun it working fine. I can't get this gun now because I'm in college (can't afford it) but I'm graduating in May and will hopefully get a job soon after, so it'll be an option for me soon. Maybe by then Century will fix their QC problems and they'll all be good guns. Anyway, thanks again for the review.

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  9 років тому +1

      I can understand your hesitation. I will say though that it's difficult to find an AK producer who doesn't have quality control issues. I know that Century has the track record for bad QC, but as I said I had a brand new Arsenal AK come with a canted front post. Another company I would take a look at is DDI when it comes time for you to buy an AK. They are supposed to be high quality as well.

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  9 років тому

      John Smith Well then I hope you are correct that the QC has been improved. I still can't help but be disappointed that it needed improving in the first place. Poor QC during the launch of a new product has, in my opinion, doomed the Remington R51 to never be successful. I'd hate to see that happen to Century when it already has to live down all the issues WASRs had. That said, keep making good products. There are still a few Century rifles I have my eye on.

      +mace085 You would have to get one made for stamped receivers. The nice thing about the US made AK is you can put whatever parts you want without really worrying about 922(R) compliance. So for example AK-404BUS would work as would AK-404B.

    PLEASE save up a bit more money and get an Arsenal Milled AK, currently the SAM7 series of such rifles. They feature a rail for an optic mount, have the finest receivers on the planet and feature Steyr chrome lined barrels. They will certainly outlast you and will probably outlast your kids kids and maybe even their kids. If you MUST have an inexpensive stamped AK at LEAST get one with a chrome lined barrel. The WASR's appear to be gone with only a Century offering starting with "CH" (I have forgotten the rest of the model number) still featuring a chrome lined bore and chamber. FORGET THE CLAIMS about the "new" nitride treatment, the Melonite treatment and all the newer barrel treatments that are being foisted off on the public for ONE reason only, it is MUCH cheaper to produce a rifle with these "treatments" than it is to chrome line a barrel. A chrome lined barrel with even a modicum of care will certainly outlast its owner. I have a very old SLR95 and an SLR101 both milled AK's from a couple of decades ago that have had several tens of thousands of rounds of bi-metal ammo run through both and their bores are still like new. If you want a rifle that will never fail you or any of your heirs for that matter, please consider saving a bit more money and get yourself an Arsenal SAM7 series of rifles that come in various variants with all but their underfolder having a side mounted scope rail. If you only want one AK47 and want it to last forever I highly recommend saving your money and when you can finally afford one, get an Arsenal USA bulgarian milled receiver SAM7 rifle in the variant of your choosing.
    Oh, and before buying ANY Century product, give their customer service department a call. That oughtta open your eyes as to what to expect should you ever need their services.

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  8 років тому

      The SAM7 series are excellent rifles. Personally I prefer stamped receiver AKs myself, but your points are well taken. I no longer recommend these rifles due to all of the information that has come out since my review.

    • @dennismatt9549
      @dennismatt9549 8 років тому

      I have an Arsenal stamped AK47, a limited run of actual Izmash Russian receiver Ak's that K-Var offered for a short time. I dropped a Red Star adjustable trigger in it and it actually is my "go to" AK. I screwed up badly and added some overweight aluminum railed fore end and added all kids of lights, grips, etc.......the rifle became almost unusable it was so forward heavy......hahaha........anyway, I ended up taking all that crap off and returning it to its original fore end configuration. With the possible sole exception of the receiver/barrel being somewhat more stable and thus possibly more accurate to tell you the truth I cannot tell the difference even when using magnified optics. I like the Russian markings and the collectible nature of that single stamped Russian AK and have also read studies of long term usage and reality seems to indicate that as far as longevity goes there probably is no discernable difference between a milled and stamped receiver. You MAY obtain a slight accuracy improvement with a milled AK, especially one of the quality of the Bulgarian milled receivers that the SAM7 series comes with but you also have to consider the weight trade off as the milled rifle is a heavier gun. Six of one, half a dozen of the other I guess. I have just been amazed with my track record of Arsenal Bulgaria then Arsenal USA AK47's. I still have a very old SLR95 that dates back to........well, a few presidents back and that rifle still shoots as good today as when I got the thing used way back when. I can even remember calling Arsenal USA when they first opened their doors and the heavy slavic accent of the guy that answered the phone made the order process kinda difficult. That was THE BEGINNING of Arsenal USA out of Nevada and man they sure have grown since then! Still make the finest AK's one can get in my opinion, stamped or milled and they really go way out of the way to provide incredible customer service.

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  8 років тому

      I've had a lot of luck with my Arsenal. Furthest I've shot with it was about 120 yards, but I had no issue making consistent hits on steel at that range. I've heard that the milled receivers have a greater potential for accuracy, but the results I'm getting with mine don't warrant the extra weight, in my opinion. Arsenal certainly makes great rifles, but they also have the potential to disappoint. The coatings they use are notorious for bubbling when hot and mine is not the only one I know of that came from the factory with horribly canted sights. That said, I still recommend them to people who can't afford something like a Rifle Dynamics AK.

    • @dennismatt9549
      @dennismatt9549 8 років тому

      I have never come across a canted sight on any Arsenal I have bought for either myself or for others and being a dealer that is quite a few. If such ever happened the company would provide a shipping label and fix the problem, they did that with ONE Arsenal AK I ordered that came with a deep scratch in the stock.
      You are right about their finish as it is little more than baked on paint. Easy to fix for say scratches but I would prefer a parkerized finish (and have had some of my own Ceracoated). Never came across any bubbling of the finish either but that too would be corrected by Arsenal if brought to their attention.
      I do hope that at some point Arsenal does supply their rifles with a "tougher" finish but until then I will continue to fill orders as they come in. Strangely enough in this area I have moved quite a few Arsenals as hunting rifles in this heavily wooded with thick underbrush area of the country. Great rifle for the short ranges deer hunting in these parts call for and they are in great demand for hunting Coyotes as they are a fairly hard hitting yet compact rifle to drag though this areas terrain. Heck, I might try to do a "home ceracoating" job on one of my rifles and learn by trial and error and maybe if I can "master" the process provide it as a paid service as the Arsenal AK's remain quite popular. I do wish they would begin making their stamped versions in 7.62X39 again as you are correct on the weight issue.

    • @OreGear
      @OreGear  8 років тому

      +Dennis Matt man, I wish they provided a shipping label. I had to pay for shipping myself which wasn't cheap because FedEx (the only shipper in my area that will ship guns) requires guns to be shipped overnight. Had to pay over $100 in shipping to get my canted sights fixed.

      Are you serious? The finish is 100x better than an Arsenal. Maybe it has cast trunnions but the finish is superb.

      +john tiedd ... Now why would you call me a "dumbass"??.. I didn't post this because of something I read or heard. I own one of these and found the finish to scratch very easily!.. While changing the forend just mildly rubbing the barrel during installation the "paint" was scratching off whenever it touched. I was NOT beating, gouging, hammering, or fighting with it either. My statement is from personal experience. When you get old enough to shave. Maybe you'll ask why someone posts something instead of just calling them names... DUMBASS!!..

      +Bernard Milot No, the finish on the RAS is actually excellent. The bolt and bolt carrier on the other hand is made of butter.

      I just bought it last month so I called and have to file a claim but they said they will repair or replace. I'm sorta upset I don't trust these anymore it locked open and shot hot gas in my face. The right locking lug basically cracked off only to be held on by one rivet. I don't know how they can sell this crap it's almost criminal. I just want to get the word out so people don't spend 600 dollars on this junk.

      That's too bad, I don't blame you for not wanting another RAS 47. What I would do is get it repaired/replaced and sell it.

    why do people prefer 90 degree gas blocks over 45 degree?

      +Joel Kellom As I understand it, as far as the end user is concerned, the only difference is cosmetic. I've heard there are differences when shooting corrosive ammo, but realistically there seems to be very little difference.
      Thanks for your question!
