I am 67 and I fell in love with this group in the late '90s. Your Aunt Paty is a music lover and she has the roots and life experience that makes it easy for her to be open-minded about something different. There was no more divergent and experimental musical age than the 60s and 70s. I fully get her and appreciate that she has lived an era I share. I too listened and saw great musicians at the Fillmore, Winterland, Sacramento Memorial Auditorium back in the late 60s. What a great training ground for psychedelic, blues, folk, rock, and even the great roots of Prog. Thanks, Lex and Patty for sharing your thoughts on this wonderful piece.
Dream Theater has always had that Rush vibe to me. They are precision masters like the Mighty Rush thats for sure! Thanks Lex for sharing! And you have an awesome Auntie!
Great reaction so nice to see the mature and younger generations getting together to listen to great music, my request for you guys is for Renaissance, Things I don’t Understand Live 1974 remastered version.
I tried to get my family into DT years ago, and they just had zero interest. I even put on one of the concerts to try and ‘show’ them their chops, but they just went into another room instead. Oh well lol
LOL - Yeah, can imagine. It's like trying to talk to them about advanced calculus...goes right over most people's heads. After all, there's a reason why you mostly hear pop, techno & rap coming out of the speakers once you turn on the radio; it's music that's easy to understand.
I've had similar problems with some family members but I'm very anti-social so, if they turn up uninvited, I turn the volume right up, including the sub-woofer, so that they can't talk over it and, if they go to another room, they can still hear it [and so can the neighbours].
My mom (and most of my family) really like this album, and we have enjoyed together watching the live concert a few times. But I know what you mean, I tried to show her some Gojira songs but it proved too harsh for her liking :D

It was so awesome for you to share the experience of Dream Theater with Aunt Paty, These were a nice choice of songs as you get some variety with a lot of musical passages that Dream Theater are so famous for. This proves that really good music stands the test of time and many generations from diverse backgrounds can all come together be united by the artistry being presented.

Thumbs up for Aunt Paty, so openminded to "modern" music and such a great analysis on top. I'm glad you listened to my favourite DT album and also one of my TOP 5 of all times. Hope you're gonna react to Finally Free one day, what a fantastic finale to this epic album ... and even better on Live Scenes, Mike Portnoy "destroyed" his drums .... we left the concert in 2000 and the melody of this song was in our heads for the rest of the night.
Nice reaction! ☺ I saw Dream Theater perform "Scenes From a Memory" in it's entirety live in concert in 2000. Then they came back onstage for a second set of some of their other songs. They performed about 3 hours with perfection! Awesome show - I'll never forget it. In 2017 they did a similar approach for "The Astonishing" - another superb concert! 🌎✌🌿🎶

Yup, the Scenes From a Memory album is one of the best albums ever produced. And it came out 2 years after the most disappointing DT album (Falling Into Infinity, which IMO has only 3 really great songs: Trial of Tears, Lines In the Sand & Hell's Kitchen, whereas normally about 90% are killer songs). I still remember as if it had been yesterday...I put it on & braced myself for another disappointment (after all, it's impossible to keep churning out killer albums one after the other as they'd already done with their first 3 albums), but boy, was I relieved when I'd finished listening to the whole thing. For the whole time I was in awe; they had done it again; & better than ever before; they'd created their absolute masterpiece, which of course was more than mere compensation for the FII disaster (which is of course still better than about 99% of all other albums out there) :)

I think you, Lex, or Nick mentioned your folks did not know Genesis as a progressive rock band. Does Paty? Are you going to introduce her to Genesis with Peter Gabriel?
There are probably a few relatives that I could sit down and listen to the music I enjoy. My Brother (who is 10 years younger) got into most of the music I like, but he's not into DT, Fates Warning or bands of that ilk (I really don't know why), yet he likes Queensryche, and we have seen them together, maybe twice? (Mindcrime Tour, opening for Metallica "...And Justice for All/Damaged Justice Tour"). We've seen Rush together for about 6 tours, as well as their last, with my Ex, and Friend. Primus is another fave of ours which we've seen together (along with a few other bands, including Yes, and ELP when they re-formed), but now we hardly talk. My Mom practically listens to everything. She could be listening to Luis Miguel, Enya, Bjork, Led Zeppelin, Santana, The Beatles and from Rock, Classical, Latin, New Age, R&B from the past and present, Latin Jazz, Traditional Jazz and even Alternative music. She's heard me play Spock's Beard and she said; "Wow! It sounds so big, like an orchestra!". My Father, if he were alive, would probably enjoy many of the bands like Dream Theater because of their musicality/virtuosic playing. But I think with many in my family, I think it would get monotonous after awhile :p. Though it be curious to hear what other family members would say (Aunt's, Uncles, Cousins etc.), but I'm not close with most in my family (Moms side and Dads side). It take a long time to explain why that is, but its too bad we aren't closer. But I am waiting for a response to your last video with Paty, Lexi, from my Aunt Dinora (she is my Dad's half-sister). Last nights episode made me want to ask her what it was like to grow-up in Honduras in the late 60's and early 70's, her and her siblings were very attractive, and in pictures you could see they were VERY influenced by American culture (they all moved here in the mid-70's and became citizens, now live in various parts of the nation). So I sent her the link to the show to watch, maybe it will bring back memories of her own to share, and I'll share them under _that_ video :). Just some Dream Theater information . . . The "Overture" basically just that; The melodies played are "what's to come" in the various tracks on the album. The concept of the album (quotes from Wiki); The album is the sequel to "Metropolis-Part I: 'The Miracle and the Sleeper'", a song previously featured on the band's 1992 album "Images and Words". "Nicholas", a troubled man going through past life regression therapy. In a hypnotic trance induced by his hypnotherapist, he begins to see a girl named Victoria Page (who is mentioned as "she" in the original song on Images and Words) and a life that feels strangely familiar, despite the fact that he has never been here. . . . From here it begins to unfold as a Murder Mystery (be sure to read the Wikipedia page about the album). It was heartwarming to see Paty enjoying the various melodies and reacting to it all with her hand movements. Though since they are not conventional songs, she had to take a breather and a sip of water ^_^. Its amazing what she was saying about the music, because if she were reading the lyrics, she would be spot-on to what's happening in the story! I don't know about Paty, but if you guys played the track; "The Spirit Carries On", you would be balling your eyes out Lexi. I can never listen to that track without thinking of friends and my Dad who passed away. - I hope we see more of Paty, and more reactions with her. That was fun :D.

Spirit carries on is on my track list for my funeral ...:-)
