I'm sorry but true locals and those born and raised in the valley know about both the labs. I have a few family members working at the one lab you specifically mentioned and it's not as glorious as you try to portray it to be. Yellowstone has brought more struggle and stress along the lines of affordablity to live because of increasing rates for homes/rentals and all around essential needs everywhere especially between Hamilton and darby. I'm sorry for being negative but the fact of the matter is people aren't seeing the truth of the reality and videos and anything relatable like this just make it worse. Montana is wonderful and deserves to be appreciated but also needs to be supported and respected!

I lived on the Chief Joseph ranch in 1961 and started school in Darby. The house we lived in was a married ranch hands house a couple hundred feet Northwest of the Lodge that disappeared long ago. When we were there it was the Z bar Three based out of Jordan Valley, Oregon. At the time Darby was around 300 and Hamilton was around 700. We thought it was a huge town.
Sad to see that the folks that grew up there are priced out of the housing market by outsiders. The same thing is happening here in Idaho.

I've lived here for a year-and-a-half, in an 80-year-old rental property. STILL cannot find an affordable house to buy!!! My advice: DO NOT COME HERE UNLESS YOU'RE A MILLIONAIRE, OR CLOSE TO IT! YOU BETTER HAVE A DARNED GOOD, VERY WELL-PAYING JOB!! (also, there's only a teensy handful of rental properties available, it's not like you can pick a nice one that you really want!) Many/most of the inexpensive homes for sale are VERY old and yet they are getting like $400,000 for it!!! (and I'm talking small houses) It's absurd.

If I knew what I know now I would have moved to Montana years ago when things were cheaper. Too late to start over now but I try to visit there atleast once a year.

Left the valley this year after 20 years. Golfing and watching "Yellowstone" on TV is not my thing.

The original lab was west of town on Ricketts Road. It is now the site of the Hamilton Players. Of course heavily remodeled. After the lab moved into town, it was a natural history museum. Ricketts was a scientist who investigated Rocky Mountain Fever.

Looks like the Bitterroot Valley done got invaded by outsiders; a shame. I lived in Hamilton and in Darby each for a summer while in forestry school (1970s). I spent my last summer there in Sula. Those places were sleepy little towns then with few to no tourists.

I drove to Hamilton last fall and was thoroughly impressed. Unfortunately I was also disgusted with the mostly vacant McMansions and grossly overdone estates that are popping up all over the place. I’ve watched Bend, OR go through this and it’s a huge red flag. Wish I could have retired 25 years ago and would have chosen Hamilton.

Don't forget to tell everyone that when the lab's incinerator is operating, you can smell that smoke for many blocks away...depending on which way the wind is blowing. No big deal. Smelly stuff can't hurt anyone.

Born and raised in the valley. Only the true locals have known what that lab is and has been since the beginning and yes it may have been a secret for many years. I remember it having no fence until the whole 9-11 tragedy then they had to secure it with all the fencing. There has been good and bad about that lab which many will never truly know because honestly there shouldn't be big stories about that place as it just puts more of a target on the area.
BTW anyone find any more signs of Bigfoot or any other rather large or strange animals in the mountains lately?

Covid and Yellowstone ruined our valley !
It was a perfect storm. It has tragically grown with people who are not like minded like us old timers . New-comers in the past 4 years that have moved in have changed the whole culture (for the worst) . The crime had doubled, the trash on the side of the road way and nature trails are despicable. Traffic has tripled , I'm not saying all the newcomers are bad , it's just that Hamilton and Darby use to be sleepy little towns with hard working blue collar people who all helped each other. Its now occuipped by wealthy remote workers pushing out the natives, and changing everything we loved about it. Its has become citified and unaffordable in every way and its so so sad .

    • @L4JRapture

A quick online search reveals US Senators are raising concerns about security breaches at The Rocky Mtn Lab - a roaming infected mouse with a virus similar to ebola and an unauthorized child wandering near the primate facility. Apparently the same lab used taxpayer funds for coronavirus expirements over a yr before the covid pandemic. 😒

No economy, an hour drive on the most dangerous stretch of highway in winter to Missoula.Mormons run the show, built the bland suburban sprawl housing, have all the Chinese made fake Western pictures and merch in all the stores from their warehouses in Darby.. and up the Rd is the incorporated outlier Polygamy Camp town of Pinesdale.Ask yourself why Mitt Romney and Chris Christy both had high dollar fundraisers in Hamilton.
