Yeah it's definitely different here. I've never tipped here in Australia. Never felt the need too. I mean if people want to they can. At least they have the choice. For me if I feel I've received exceptional service I will let the Manager of the establishment know. Sadly I haven't had to do that many times though. I just hope tipping/service charges don't make their way here to Australia. I feel like we already pay enough.
i've stopped tipping full stop.....people are pissed off you're not giving them free money.....if staff are not paid enough, take it up with the boss, not me 🙂
in Romania I tip 2-3$ (which is a fair amount for Romania, true, but not an outrageous one) when I like the service and the girl is sweet, haha. but I will never go for that 10% 15%. A tip is a tip, not shares in a company
@@valeriewright8686 that is because it is expected in the US. Tip less if the service is bad. But always tip your restaurant server in the US. Hello Darren, me and my missus are long time watchers of the channel (found you via the Macmaster). We’re visiting Italy next month to Bologna, Florence, Moderna and one other area that we’re undecided on in the area of Bologna. I was thinking as a little surprise we could have a “empty chairs and empty tables day” and have you just recommend us what we scran for the day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Big request I know but I’d like a day were we don’t have to debate what we’re eating. It’s done for us and set up by one of our “guilty pleasures” as we call you 😂.
The steak looked a bit rough to me and frozen chips for 40 dollars. The tipping culture is ridiculous if they paid a living wage there'd be no need to tip. The minimum wage in America is $ 7.25 and that has not changed for over a decade hence they need tips to survive. But going into a shop for water still asks for a tip just greed. People are just seen as a commodity in America even their citizens .
They need to provide these types of payment machines for customers. Allows the staff to enter a tip amount to be paid to the customer for giving the store some business.
Hi Darren I got to say that looked like a very large bavette steak, a tasty cut well cooked.,certainly not sirloin xx. Expensive NYC To give you an example of prices. I am a big hard rock and Heavy Metal fan. I hear from friends on FB and YT that say to see a band at say 5,000 seater venue, forget the ticket prices 😂. Parking €50 A beer 500ml €19.50 oh dear. So many venues closed down after Covid. I heard a singer say tour bus hire say for 3 weeks maybe 12 shows across USA $90,000 insane but the other expenses got to sell a lot of tickets etc. Take care mate
My wife and I went to a well-known burger place in Hawaii. When the pill came, the waiter had crossed out the two lower tips and left the highest of twenty some percent, needless to say he got sweet fa.
The definition of madness: having all your meals in midtown and for them to be good and good value. I suspect the Bronx would have better food. Perhaps take the PATH train from 34 street to Hoboken in New Jersey. Buy the water in a Bodega- a grocery shop or CVS which has medicine but also snacks and drinks.
Americans when abroad are ridiculously tight when it comes to tipping in general …..worked in a restaurant in Ireland and nobody wanted to serve a bunch of Americans
Working in the catering industry I know what it’s like to not receive a tip but that’s extreme! To expect a tip in a shop is not on especially as you go and fetch the water yourself and walk to the till. To make you feel that way is in called for. I’ve heard a lot of people say they treat you badly if you don’t tip
Canada has gone the same way. The tipping culture is OUT of control. My UK relatives complain about the UK cost of living, but you should try living in North America since COVID.
Remember when me and the wife had a steak in a dinner/ restaurant, we both had a open New York strip sandwich, fries and a bit of side salad , a huge wedge of strawberry cheesecake and a beer and coffee each the total bill including service charge and tax was $110 for the pair of us. 10 years ago. I am sure the presentage was only 10/15% that was bad enough.

Watched a program about the working conditions in America Darren John my understanding is there is virtually no holiday or sick pay no nhs like we have too
That is correct! Most people have to pay for their own health insurance, which is hundreds of dollars a month. Service workers make a minuscule hourly wage - that is set by the government - and if they did not get tips they would starve. If you go to the USA and you don’t tip, trust me - do not go back. People remember, because they rely on that income. A person who doesn’t leave a tip in NYC is called “a bum.” America is a cruel and harsh place for service workers.
Says the Hooters girl getting $300 in tips a shift, tipping is out of control in USA, the food is expensive enough so company can pay them more, I will only tip for good service it’s not a given

Now I have never been to New York, I live in North Carolina now. But I lived and cooked in Atlanta GA. for many years and one thing that I loved about Atlanta GA. Was that I could eat at so many different kinds of Restaurants. BBQ, Indian, Mexican, Italian, Jamaican, Ethiopian, Greek, the list goes on. And I have travelled around the Country Texas BBQ is good. I want to go to New Orleans for Real Creole food. Anyway my point is that there is a lot of different varieties of food in the U.S. I don't know how long your trip is or what you have planned but you could spend a lifetime trying out different kinds of foods from different regions in the U.S.
We found food prices very reasonable compared to London and massive portions too, so great vfm. As for tipping, as a visitor, it's only right to follow local convention. I don't usually tip in the UK, but it's different over there.
They say the tip helps with a low wage they get, that's the problem with America blame everybody else, don't make the customer the donkey, meal was so expensive, not for any bucket, good video DJ 👍
You have to pay a high price for the privilege of the location itself. I think these city centres all look the same somehow. These concrete jungles. Worth the expense to get there? I doubt it very much.
Several clients have been to New York recently, and they all say the same thing: everything is expensive and lower in quality than it used to be. Try self-service checkouts, I've been told they ask for a tip as well, even though no one has done anything apart from you!
I had exactly the same experience last year visiting Canada. Even buying something as simple as a takeaway coffee you were faced with having to choose between tipping options and no tip. Hated it
Steak looked good. $40?....not bad considering. Tipping for a bottle of water?.......Are they mad!!!. In Ireland we pay about 23% VAT on meals. We are not obliged to tip, but it I life the service, I'll leave 10% tip on top.
great vid n serious nosh but id ned broccoli or a big lumpa slaw too or salad..ah hell anything lol...Q..what is that cool laid back music you have on....as backing.
I don’t think they want a tip for a bottle of water. I think that all the machines are geared up the same whether you buy a bottle of water or half the shop? You had the option not to tip and you took it. Alternatively, take cash for the shops. I was shown up many years ago in New York when I genuinely forgot to tip a barman, it was humiliating. Not been back since.
Why should the public pay a tip for people doing their job and doing the bare minimum. Why should the public pay a tip because the employers pay their employees badly. No. I refuse to tip
I don't blame you. It's extortion. On top of that...lots of restaurants DO NOT DIVIDE THEIR TIPS AMONG THE SERVERS. Owners are greedy and pocket them. Shameful.
There is a Hawksmoor in NY, might as well go for that if the prices are gonna be at that level for a deli. At least you know what you are getting there.
Glad you enjoyed your steak, looked like it was cooked to your liking too (medium). Happy travels, looking forward to the next one. All the best to you 👍

One thing I have noticed over the years is Americans very rarely eat veggies, potatoes are not really one of your five a day either. If you ask for veggies you usually end up with some boiled to death green beans and that's it. Many times I've had to go to the pharmacy section and get something to get me moving again because their meat rich diet while nice is just not good for us omnivores. As for prices well the UK is getting to be the same these days and the tipping culture has kicked in big time.
@@kewkabe I didn't see DJ eating a salad and eating salad like with a roast dinner for instance is not normal in the UK or many other places. The vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, swede, parsnips, peas etc are served as part of the main meal, salad is not generally regarded as vegetables like tomatoes, they are a fruit, lettuce meh and all usually slathered in croutons, fake bacon bits, grated cheese and highly calorific creamy dressings.

Hi Darren I got to say that looked like a very large bavette steak, a tasty cut well cooked.,certainly not sirloin xx.
Expensive NYC
To give you an example of prices.
Nil Point for presentations.
Canteen Food.
My wife and I went to a well-known burger place in Hawaii. When the pill came, the waiter had crossed out the two lower tips and left the highest of twenty some percent, needless to say he got sweet fa.
Another reason why I have no intentions of going NY. Overpriced no matter where you go.
Great vlog as always mate
I used to go to NYC once a year love the big omelettes
I feel places put so much pressure on the tipping thing now. Enjoy the rest of your holiday. 🥰☀️🥰xxx
Happy holidays!
You need a nice squirt of Heinz 57 on that steak Darren. Or A1.😀
Wow that’s expensive 😮glad you enjoy your 🥩 steak but it looked tough to me 😢your a captive audience really like a lot of popular holiday places Darren anyway enjoy👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🩷🩷🙋🏼♀️xxx
Spend, spend spend. Cheaper than Dublin 😉 Love NY, my favourite place in the world (except Edinburgh) Oh and Dublins not so bad 😊
I’m going to New York in October, I’ve been to the states many times but never the big apple. I can’t wait. I love both of your channels Darren, fantastic work.
don't complain ...youtubers have paid for you trip...
Can you do a tutorial on how to fry an egg once your back DJ thanks
Hope that was a kind of gravy on the plate, otherwise the steak wasn't rested properly after cooking. I love a nice New York Strip, it's a really good cut and tender if prepared properly. Glad you liked it, DJ and that you're enjoying yourself in New York, I love New York.😊
The first thing I spotted was grilled octopus .. 😋😋😋 banging, right now to watch ❤❤❤ oh blimey those chips look awful 🥺🥺 what a shame xxxx
Thanks
Very kind
Watched a program about the working conditions in America Darren John my understanding is there is virtually no holiday or sick pay no nhs like we have too
That is correct! Most people have to pay for their own health insurance, which is hundreds of dollars a month. Service workers make a minuscule hourly wage - that is set by the government - and if they did not get tips they would starve.
If you go to the USA and you don’t tip, trust me - do not go back. People remember, because they rely on that income.
A person who doesn’t leave a tip in NYC is called “a bum.” America is a cruel and harsh place for service workers.
As long as they keep voting for it, because 'Socialism' bad, then things won't improve.
Says the Hooters girl getting $300 in tips a shift, tipping is out of control in USA, the food is expensive enough so company can pay them more, I will only tip for good service it’s not a given
@@kirathomsen-cheek9834 saw it on a UA-cam channel its outrageous we are so lucky in the uk free healthcare paid for by taxpayers and a welfare state to holiday pay and sick pay
One thing I hate about America is tipping loads of people have tried to explain it to me but I just don't get it
I stopped going to Las Vegas because of rip off prices, resort fees can now be as high as $50 a night, plus taxes.
Hi Darren, Wow, that's one Big Steak. 😮 I think you've got a good sized portion of a Cow! On that plate. 🎉 Your Brandy and peppercorn sauce looks nice. Roxy's Delicatessen, very nice. Thankyou for your video, Darren
Don’t blame you for moaning, all your videos have put me off going back to NYC, it sounds dreadful these days.
We found food prices very reasonable compared to London and massive portions too, so great vfm. As for tipping, as a visitor, it's only right to follow local convention. I don't usually tip in the UK, but it's different over there.
Great guitar work
Yeah you know what, I always tip at bars and restaurants but I’ve definitely got no interest in going to New York now
Tender and delicious what more could you ask for in a steak Darren.
Very good choice of music for this one.
Several clients have been to New York recently, and they all say the same thing: everything is expensive and lower in quality than it used to be. Try self-service checkouts, I've been told they ask for a tip as well, even though no one has done anything apart from you!
Food in Europe is much better quality.
A little tough for my tastes but the gravy looks chefs kiss
I only tip in restaurants, never a machine. NY has gotten expensive I'll give you that. I'm glad you enjoyed your steak DJ.
Didn't like the look of it TBF, the main thing though is that you enjoyed it 👍
I had exactly the same experience last year visiting Canada.
We are not obliged to tip, but it I life the service, I'll leave 10% tip on top.
nice charted fat on a juicy pork chop or a sirloin is superb!
My god , it’s so so expensive . Not my idea of a nice place to go to really.🙏🏼❤️
great vid n serious nosh but id ned broccoli or a big lumpa slaw too or salad..ah hell anything lol...Q..what is that cool laid back music you have on....as backing.
Food looked lovely Darren tips are a bit of a mind field but you’ll figure it out. Is it as hot there as up here in Canada? 37° today. 🥵🥵🥵🥵
35 here
@@DJsFoodTravels England it isn’t ☺️☺️☺️
glad you enjoyed steak looked really nice now time for the philly cheese steak
I'm not visiting Philly this time
I don’t think they want a tip for a bottle of water. I think that all the machines are geared up the same whether you buy a bottle of water or half the shop? You had the option not to tip and you took it. Alternatively, take cash for the shops. I was shown up many years ago in New York when I genuinely forgot to tip a barman, it was humiliating. Not been back since.
That looks great..
Why should the public pay a tip for people doing their job and doing the bare minimum. Why should the public pay a tip because the employers pay their employees badly. No. I refuse to tip
American food servi s workers are not paid enough and DEPEND on tips. It is written into the wage and tax codes. 🤦
It’s what you call exploitation…….
When in rome. It encourages good service. Which you very rarely get in the UK.
I don't blame you. It's extortion. On top of that...lots of restaurants DO NOT DIVIDE THEIR TIPS AMONG THE SERVERS. Owners are greedy and pocket them.
Shameful.
@@kirathomsen-cheek9834thats why they need to vote for trump he will end the taxing on tips for american workers
If you want to get a better steak Darren, try Gallagher's or Keens. I normally tip around 20%, if you want to get water, go to a 7eleven or bodega
There is a Hawksmoor in NY, might as well go for that if the prices are gonna be at that level for a deli. At least you know what you are getting there.
Glad you enjoyed your steak, looked like it was cooked to your liking too (medium). Happy travels, looking forward to the next one. All the best to you 👍
Prob be a burger
First off, great music track 🎶🎸Steak and fries, served on a plate. No faffing about with plate fillers. Brilliant, the way to go ❤Tips 🤔😂funny things. Tip a taxi driver but not a bus driver 🤔or a train driver. Servers, I'll tip for good service, but don't tell me how much you want 😕😡Anyway great looking steak, I don't mind fat. Fries, a tadge over cooked. Cost😢We don't have to choose anything we feel is over the top, if we do can't moan 😕😢🙁Allan&Family
Without people going in these places they wouldn’t have a job so for every £20 you spend they want a £3.60 tip no chance but the food looked great 👍💜
Tipping in the US is a joke it ruins a holiday really Restaurants don’t pay their staff enough money
Hi DJ
Yes America now ridiculously expensive would you say New York is more expensive than London
Good Evening DJ. You looked like you really Enjoyed your Beautiful piece of Steak with Your Fries. It really does put you off giving anything to the Server at all. You should not feel Obligated or Guilty for not giving a Gratuity. It really makes think about going to Restaurants and Cafe's now. It is the Customers choice to Tip or not.
Americans eat vegetables in the salad (first course) before the main.
@@witchmellor We're similar in the US for home meals (serve it all together) but restaurants here typically break it out into salads and entrees. Or you can order vegetables on the side.
There's sirloin, rump, ribeye, new York strip etc, then there's pedigree chum Darren 😮
Meat is good for us that's just for the veggie propaganda lol
