  • Stars and creatives of FX on Hulu's Mrs. America (Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Sarah Paulson, Margo Martindale, Ari Graynor, John Slattery, Dahvi Waller, Stacey Sher, Ryan Fleck, and Coco Francini) gather with moderator Martha Raddatz at PaleyFest LA 2020 to celebrate their show. Topics include: the dichotomy of Schlafly's surprisingly feminist lifestyle; crafting a political drama focused on women; how the 2016 presidential election affected the show; Blanchett's amazement that equal protection was not already guaranteed in America; Byrne's apprehension about playing the iconic Steinem and her research into her unconventional and troubled childhood; Aduba's inspiration from Shirley Chisholm's 1970 autobiography "Unbought and Unbossed"; and how they located a recording of Schlafly and Feigen's memorable 1974 televised debate. Also discussed are the following topics: Paulson's "liberating" experience playing a fictionalized person, contrasted with her famous role as Marcia Clark; Slattery's enjoyment of portraying "reluctant feminist" Fred Schlafly and working on the women-led show after appearing in 2015's mostly male "Spotlight"; why Schlafly, who had domestic help with her six children, felt feminism to be "anti-family"; the writers' efforts to create stronger characters and group scenes to "live up to" the actors' talents; their expectations that the series would be released during presidential debates, not during a pandemic and lockdown; the many changes to the ratification deadline of the ERA; and what they have learned about the "cyclical" nature of social change.

It's a great show, especially if you're old enough to remember those days. And, it's definitely a good, entertaining educational tool for those who don't.

This interview was a bit aimless and didn't really talk about the point of the show - why some white women keep standing in the way of social improvement and how these event keep repeating themselves.
Love the cast and creatives tho! I came to the show through seeing Uzo playing Shirley.
