    That is good news! I just got my RealID last month so this will help a lot.

    This measure should benefit around 40-45% of foreigners arriving in the country, considering the country of origin and the fact that those over the age of 60 represent only 10% foreigners. So it should reduce considerably the amount of work (delays) at IMT.
    The age limit is there probably because under Portuguese law anyone over 60 needs a medical certificate stating they are fit to drive in order to renew their license.

    Congratulations to everyone!! Good news…I got my RealID about a year ago. 👍🏻 Bad news…I’m older than 60. 👎🏻 Those young whipper snappers get all the brakes. 😁

    Hi Joric, Any thoughts about the risk that if you keep your U.S. driver’s license, your former state may claim that you are still a tax resident and hit you up for state income tax?
    For example, Virginia’s tax department is aggressive about chasing down former residents. They look at a number of factors to determine whether a former resident is still a resident for tax purposes. One of the factors is whether the former resident has held onto his or her Virginia driver’s license.

      We still have ours from AZ with no issues. With that said, I’m not sure about other states. For example in AZ, I moved there in 1996 and my expiration date is 2036! I kid you not. I think other states I would worry about your question, but not AZ. They don’t police that piece of their government well.

      @@traveltidbitsrusInteresting to learn about Arizona’s 40-year license! Yes, I think you’re correct that some states are less aggressive than others about trying to collect income tax from former residents. Virginia is known to be quite aggressive about it, Arizona probably less so - and if you have a license from Florida or one of the other states without a state income tax, you don’t need to worry at all …

    Thank you for the information Joric. So since I am over 60 would I still need to bring an apostille copy of my driver's record to make the exchange?
    Thanks in advance.

      Yes. I feel bad as 3 people over 60 told me this change was coming, but after was revealed, it does not help them. Most people moving to a Portugal will probably be over 60, and need to do get the apostille, do the exchange, etc.

    Thank you but I have one question. Do they offer the driving test in any other language besides Portuguese? I have not learned the language yet.

    • @traveltidbitsrus
      @traveltidbitsrus  2 роки тому +1

      Only Portuguese for the written test, and only Portuguese for the person riding with you on the road test. If you are learning the language, make sure you are learning European Portuguese and not Brazilian. We started learning in the US and did not realize most apps, and online classes are in Brazilian and there are differences.

    @joricmclean - Clarification pls. - are you saying that if your drivers license expires within a year or two years - then you have to do the exchange route? Even if you are from an OECD country?

    • @traveltidbitsrus
      @traveltidbitsrus  2 роки тому

      Not saying that. If you are from an approved country you don’t have to, unless per the video, you are over 60 or have had the license for more than 15 years.

    Hi Joric, don't the Portuguese rules still apply in terms of exchanging your driver's license within X amount of months from the date one becomes a resident (regardless of whether one's current driver's license expires beyond that period)? And if that timeline is exceeded, that individual must take the Portuguese driving and written exam? I heard that was the case...

    • @traveltidbitsrus
      @traveltidbitsrus  2 роки тому +2

      No longer the case. This new provision allows you to drive with your current license, per the parameters outlined in the video.

    Hi Joric,
    Could you do a video on finding employment while living in Portugal? I know you’ve commented on in previous videos, but I didn’t see a video entirely dedicated to this on your channel.
    Also curious which Lisbon neighborhoods are most pet friendly.

    • @traveltidbitsrus
      @traveltidbitsrus  2 роки тому +2

      Mike, great suggestions. I will put together a video regarding employment. For me, I had to find remote employment back in the US. My wife has a work visa here. Finding work is MUCH more difficult that what people state on videos. Of course, it depends on what type of work you do. Also, just about anywhere in Lisbon is very pet friendly. Most of our friends have dogs and they live all over the city center and have never had any issues.
