The audience was captivated by her angelic voice not only during this performance, but still decades later millions of people worldwide are exalted with every verse sung by this lovely lady.

    50年近く前私が学生の頃、newport jazz fesの映画を見て彼女のこの歌を聴いた時、涙が溢れて止まらなくなったことを思い出す。彼女の声は本当に魂を揺さぶる。

2 years before I was born, but I wish I could have heard her sing live!! I sang this at a friend's wedding, and heard others sing it, but NO ONE touches it like her!!! SIP Anointed woman of God!!!

My son has become a cathedral chorister. I am, therefore, learning much about 'an entirely broad subject area; about which previously I knew little. Great education. This version of the Lords Prayer I really like.

    Better singer than Aretha?

@Adrian Lawrence. You be the judge of whose voice is better between these two. Aretha Franklin idolized Mahalia Jackson, and both were incredible singers.

No question that Mahalia Jackson was a waaaay better singer than Aretha. Mahalia’s sheer power and conviction was unparalleled. Remember that Mahalia Jackson also never loaned her talents to secular music. There is a conviction in her voice and person that can’t be easily found today.

Shame that whilst she was adored by a bunch of white folk, her own people
had already started in 58 to ignore black giants of jazz, a fate very soon to befall many artists from Louis Daniel Armstrong onwards. Petersen, Coltrane, Davis, Hawkins..struth why should I list 'em? Y'all know 'em!

You are very much misinformed! What does Mahalia Jackson have to do with the decline of traditional jazz music in 1958! AND...in 1958, white people were just discovering Mahalia Jackson! Her own people, Black People were already great followers of her and had been since the late 1930's! You white people are always trying to steal our legacy and take credit for what we do or have done! GO SOMEWHERE...SIT DOWN AND BE QUIET...PLEASE!!
