I make oliveoil handsoap, wanted to learn something new and the aleppo soap was gentle on my hands, but expensive and the shape doesn't invite holding it so much. Now secret and why i only use olive oil (or liquid at room temp fats), all ingredients need to be the same temperature. Make the lye water mix the evening before and no need to heat the already liquid oil, since they'll all be the same temperature. I stopped using shampoo, conditioner, detangler about 14 years back after a dandruf and itch explosion. Choice was medicated, agressive shampoo (no thanks) or switch to pre safe drinking water to wash with solution and use a very fine toothed comb (that you do wash often). Thank you Ruth Goodman (BBC series tudor monestary farm) for showing me that option. Saved me me a lot of money, itchies and assorted mess. I do notice that both right combing technique and season has influence on hairloss (outside of stress or nutrient problems), humans still do have some shedding fur due to shorter/longer days triggers. So episodes of losing more hair can be a normal hormone daylength response, although that usually doesn't show in bald spots, but just in more hairs in the brush/comb.

Wonderful video! Interestingly, my hair STOPPED falling out after getting said certain virus, and for six glorious months, I had a head full of thick hair. Sadly, in the year after that six months, it's as if my hair is playing catch up, so Ive been on the lookout for remedies. This seems perfect, will give it a try. If nothing else, it's great to get away from reliance on store-bought products, with all their money-saving additives (which saves THEM money, not you). I also really appreciate your lack of fear-mongering over lye. Yes, lye can be dangerous. But so can driving, bee-keeping and even simply using a knife. Be sensible and evaluate your own desired level of risk, rather than insisting everyone mindlessly follow a strict rule list. Being aware and constantly evaluating your circumstances is going to keep you FAR more safe than any other rule. I appreciate your gentle no-nonsense, logical approach to everything you do on your homestead, its so refreshing!

This looks actually doable!! I want to save some internal fat from any hunting this fall and give it a try!! I’ve been using bar soap on my hair for maybe 2 years now and I see no reason to ever go back to shampoo. I switched for similar reasons. So weird that shampoo formulas include ingredients known to cause hair loss. Bars reduce plastic packaging too! 🙌🏻
@@SageandStoneHomestead yes but I second running it through a lye calculator just to be safe; also if you run the original through before running the substitution you can see what else might change like hardness, creamyness, bubbling, ect
I had made pine tar soap probably 3 years ago or so. A few months ago I tried it on my hair and have been using it instead of shampoo ever since as I really liked it for that. It has coconut oil, olive and castor oils in it also, along with cocoa butter and a smidgen of beeswax. I think I will try making a batch of your soap after I get some beef or deer fat somewhere to render out. Thanks for sharing.

I found that tallow or castile soap works great as a shampoo for my psoriasis (all over my scalp and, if I'm burnt out, it runs down my neck). I always do a big batch and it cures really well ❤ those are so gentle on the skin... Homemade soaps for the win!

This is great ! I’ve been using homemade shampoo for awhile now , but mine is a liquid soap made from soap nuts and flax seed . It works great, but I’d love to give this a try !! 🤩
I went through the same issues with my hair as you, well mine was more like my sides were super thin and my hairline was receding. I too have lots of thick hair. First I thought well you pull it back all the time, so I stopped that for a while…nothing. Then it was after the virus so I thought well maybe. And still nothing. Then at the time I was 41 and thought peri menopause as well so I tried all kinds of things and well surprise nothing. Then the more I researched the more I learned about sls and the other sulfate thingy, and parabens and fragrances (even natural aren’t so natural typically ) I already make soaps so this shouldn’t be hard. Was gonna do it sooner but life. Time to stop putting it off. Btw, if it gets too stiff to pour easily try blending a little less that may help. Thanks for the awesome video. I sometimes do get fly aways when it's really humid, but no normally I just use the shampoo bar. Sometimes I will do an ACV rinse with 5 parts water 1 part ACV, and sometimes I will use an aloe-based conditioner but not often.!

Thanks so much heather. I will make one request. There is a big difference between lard and tallow. Please do not substitute lard for a oil to use. Lard is a oily oil and could leave your hair greasy. If you can’t use coconut oil then use more tallow or castor oil. Thanks again for the shout out. Your the best

I make goat milk soap, lotion and sugar scrub and have been wanting to do shampoo bars for awhile, but you know, hours in a day. Hopefully I'll get to it soon Some tips for a better pour; Instead of using the stick blender at the end to blend in the EO hand stir it in and put it in a little bit sooner. Pour it before it's actually that pudding consistancy. If you wear gloves for the pour and it's starting to seize up you can smush it down into the molds better with your hand. I usually put mine in the fridge once it has set up some. I might try this with some goat tallow I"ve been hoarding ;-)
@@SageandStoneHomestead I do soap with just milk, no water; I freeze milk in different size molds, weigh it out frozen, put part of it in my bowl and the rest in the freezer. Sprinkle a little lye over the frozen milk and let it start melting; come back every 15-30 min, stir, add more lye, add more frozen milk to help keep the mix cold. If the house is really hot I will set the bowl into a bowl of ice water but try not to do that. You just don't want the mixture to get too hot and scorch the milk. Before I start with the lye I weigh out solid fats like lard, coconut and melt them together, when melted I turn off the burner and pour in the liquid oils, cover and let set to cool. I soap basically at room temp. By the time the lye mix is ready the oils are cool. I try to have both close to the same temp when I mix. The other way is to use water to dissolve the lye and put the milk into the oil. LoL. My way takes awhile to make and the first time I saw Blue Cactus do it the other way I was like "you cheater!" lol. I've never done it that way so don't know if it comes out different or not. My way will take the most milk tho and that's what I was trying to do, use up milk. ;-)

Most of the the time I don't do anything but wash my hair with the shampoo bar every 5 to 7 days. Occasionally I'll do an apple cider vinegar rinse with 5 parts water 1 part ACV, and I did just buy an aloe based conditioner but I'm not sure I like it or maybe I'm using too much. It's a little heavy even when rinsed out. I tend to have oily hair, at least I did growing up. It's been a lot less oily in the last 5 years. (only been using the bar shampoo for 5ish months

Thank you Heather for this video. I have noticed that my hair is falling out more than usual. I am menopausal. But this hair loss it is more than usual. I have also tried SLS Free shampoo. I did a lot of research and I found a SLS free shampoo. I found something called T Gel. No SLS or other things in it. It has tar in it. I had one wash with it and I noticed a big difference after using T Gel. My hair fell out less. No flakiness or itch. So I am very happy with this product. I've seen several shampoo bar recipes, but none that included sugar and salt. Interesting. I've been losing my hair for quite awhile, and got a twinge of excitement when I saw your video. I. Afraid though that having all the old together will be to weighty for my thin baby fine hair. I might try cutting the recipe in half or thirds, just so I can see if they work for me, before making a bazillion of them. I love your downhome, next door neighbor feel. 🤗

The woman who gave me the recipe said lard would be a little heavy and maybe Would not be great for a shampoo, better for a body soap. Others without tallow said subbing in the same amount of extra coconut oil should work well, though I have not tried it! The shampoo I made is never greasy, there is enough lye to turn the oils into soap and leave the hair very clean! You can definitely use it all over the body!
It took a good four months for me to notice anything. We use about a bar a month between my husband and I, the kids use a bar in their shower and it is used up about as fast.
I've never tried it but I've been told no. It could be possible but may need adjusting so the lye/lard has a smaller superfat (leftover fat) percentage. If you google "soap calculator" you can play around with different fats and ratios :)
Does it make it to where you have to wash your hair more often? Does all the oils and tallow make your hair more oily? I just ordered a goats milk shampoo bar to try before making my own. I’m just worried my hair won’t work with it. But I t seems like every store bought shampoo doesn’t work for me. So I’m desperate at this point.
no not at all! The lye mixing with the oils turning them into soap. every soap recipe has a little extra oil that's left behind so your skin won't totally dry out, the bit that's left in this recipe is hydrating but does not weigh it down :)
Not to discount your experience but I can’t find a SLS shampoo on earth anymore. Perhaps it’s where I live. Ooh I was looking for a decent tallow recipe. Thank you
What about using Goats Milk instead of water? would that be beneficial or would the process cancel the benefits of goats milk? I love my shampoo bar! If someone is having trouble with the feel and manageability of their hair it may be necessary to use a hair Detox to remove wax build up as well as other chemicals from the hair and that will make a difference in the way your hair responds to the change. I buy tallow at the farmers market from the beef guy.
@@SageandStoneHomestead for me it doesn’t but I have a lot of hair 😳 and it’s tends to be dry and frizzy. The goat milk tends to almost be like a leave in conditioner. Less frizz and dryness.

You can buy it online but we get it locally where things like drain cleaner are. I know it sounds like something you wouldn't want on your body having said drain cleaner... but once the reaction occurs between the lye and the oils the lye is no longer chemically present.

If you are like me and cannot use coconut oil, you can substitute it 1:1 with lard. If you don’t have lard, you can use tallow.

No the oils are converted to soap with the lye water and the hair is not oily! It's great.

Thank you Heather for this video. I have noticed that my hair is falling out more than usual. I am menopausal. But this hair loss it is more than usual. I have also tried SLS Free shampoo. I did a lot of research and I found a SLS free shampoo. I found something called T Gel. No SLS or other things in it. It has tar in it. I had one wash with it and I noticed a big difference after using T Gel. My hair fell out less. No flakiness or itch. So I am very happy with this product. I've seen several shampoo bar recipes, but none that included sugar and salt. Interesting. I've been losing my hair for quite awhile, and got a twinge of excitement when I saw your video. I. Afraid though that having all the old together will be to weighty for my thin baby fine hair. I might try cutting the recipe in half or thirds, just so I can see if they work for me, before making a bazillion of them. I love your downhome, next door neighbor feel. 🤗
The oils all turn into soap and it's lovely on my husband and daughter's thin hair! A small batch is smart though!

Surprisingly no! It smells like the Rosemary Oil I used in it.

I can’t use any of the store bought stuff. Make my own Castile soap. Add tea tree and lemon grass for face and body and tea tree and rosemary for hair

Not usually but apple cider vinegar rinse works well. 5 parts water to 1 part ACV
Wow. I don't have any tallow yet. Can it be substituted with something else? A different oil or lard without feeling greasy? Also, does this recipe work well as a head to toe? Thanks so much. I will take note of it and try it after we process our first beef cows. :)
The woman who gave me the recipe said lard would be a little heavy and maybe Would not be great for a shampoo, better for a body soap. Others without tallow said subbing in the same amount of extra coconut oil should work well, though I have not tried it! The shampoo I made is never greasy, there is enough lye to turn the oils into soap and leave the hair very clean! You can definitely use it all over the body!
Do you have a good recipe for a conditioner bar?
No I haven't needed it, but 5 parts water one part Apple Cider Vinegar is a great post-wash rinse for smoothing out and softening hair

How long did you need to use it before seeing results?
It took a good four months for me to notice anything. We use about a bar a month between my husband and I, the kids use a bar in their shower and it is used up about as fast.

People are saying extra tallow works to replace the coconut oil, 1 to 1. I wonder if you could just increase the coconut oil?
Can lard be substituted for tallow
I've never tried it but I've been told no. It could be possible but may need adjusting so the lye/lard has a smaller superfat (leftover fat) percentage. If you google "soap calculator" you can play around with different fats and ratios :)
Does it make it to where you have to wash your hair more often? Does all the oils and tallow make your hair more oily? I just ordered a goats milk shampoo bar to try before making my own. I’m just worried my hair won’t work with it. But I t seems like every store bought shampoo doesn’t work for me. So I’m desperate at this point.
no not at all! The lye mixing with the oils turning them into soap. every soap recipe has a little extra oil that's left behind so your skin won't totally dry out, the bit that's left in this recipe is hydrating but does not weigh it down :)

What about using Goats Milk instead of water? would that be beneficial or would the process cancel the benefits of goats milk?
I love my shampoo bar! If someone is having trouble with the feel and manageability of their hair it may be necessary to use a hair Detox to remove wax build up as well as other chemicals from the hair and that will make a difference in the way your hair responds to the change. I buy tallow at the farmers market from the beef guy.
You can definitely use goats milk. I make goats milk soap and the lather and skin feel afterward is amazing.
Heather have you tried it on your hair? Does the moisturizing property of the milk weigh the hair down?
@@SageandStoneHomestead for me it doesn’t but I have a lot of hair 😳 and it’s tends to be dry and frizzy. The goat milk tends to almost be like a leave in conditioner. Less frizz and dryness.

Does the lye not damage your hair and bad for skin ?
No mixing it with oils uses the lye up as it converts the oil to soap. After 24h the lye is gone and that’s the reason for the zap test

Where do you get the lye from?
You can buy it online but we get it locally where things like drain cleaner are. I know it sounds like something you wouldn't want on your body having said drain cleaner... but once the reaction occurs between the lye and the oils the lye is no longer chemically present.

I’d say yes! I don’t know how the hair would react like if it would be so moisturizing it would weigh it down. Worth testing out

I have made goat's milk soap but not in the shampoo bar! I should try that next and see what my hair thinks. I know my skin loves goat's milk soap!

Dunno that's the recipe I follow and it works. I'm sure there is a science behind it.
