@@aeiou1738 because its made of steel wich is strong enough to withstand getting hit by another weapon. Its not like its a shitty plastic sword. Steal is very durable and lightweight when its thin but still flexible. Plus swords are made with the meatel runs through the haft so its actually part of the hilt so it won't just snap off
@@aeiou1738 its a common belief that swords were rigid, but they were designed to be massively flexible, to the point they would bend quite far without snapping. Combine that with being tempered and hardened and you have a flexible weapon able to withstand impacts and take minimal damage. As the guy above me said, the metal continues from the actual sword edge all the way through to the pommel, and the metal underneath the grip is known as the tang, which allows the weapon to take more impacts without snapping at the hilt. Take a look at some UA-cam videos that show how swords were created, just ignore the "Damascus" videos and focus on imitation European medieval swordsmiths
It’s worth noting that the weapons used in BuHurt are significantly heavier and beefier than real historical swords. While BuHurt does have a lot of historical similarities, it’s definitely a lot more on “smash them silly” side of the spectrum since the goal is to get your opponent on their knees, and not legit kill them with with a dagger through an armor gap. HEMA is more based in historical fighting technique, but focuses mostly in in-armored dueling techniques, kind of like Modern Fencing but with more historically accurate swords.

hey simon good shit in the video. how do you get "out" in this? is it if your knee touches the ground or just when you get the shit beat out of you and you give up?
Ehm no, it's really hard to kill a knight in full armour, mostly they were knocked out of combat, with big maces and hammers, cracking the armour if possibile or just making them unable to fight
Davide B. Eh no Long swords and pole arms were the weapon of choice The fights consisted of tiring out the other individual, getting them on their back, and finishing them off with a dagger. Enough blunt trauma can be inflicted through halfswording a long sword and if an opportunity presented itself, an opponent can be killed with a “death blow” which is a heavy strike from the heavy side of a long sword. There were quite a few openings in armor too where if a knight was skilled enough, they can inflict damage by thrusting into the gaps of the armor with the long sword. Even if that damage could be easily avoided, the opponent can be tired out easily trying to deflect and avoid those strikes. Armor was impervious to a lot of damage, yes, but at its base fighting in armor consisted of being a battle of stamina. The first knight to tire and get knocked on the ground will have absolutely zero chance of recovering from that and it was almost always considered the end of a bout. Maces and hammers were effective in giving knights concussions and a few broken bones but the main weapon that killed knights were daggers and the weapon used most to dismantle knights were Longswords and pole arms because of their versatility and range.
Problem with samurai is the katanas would most likely break on the steel especially if they are blunt. Also I’m not sure how much protection their head armor would give against pole arms. Edit: And yes there is a Japanese team
My father used to do this; there is even a ranking system based on the medieval era. They make their armor thicker than what history tells them to be, so they can survive a hit to the head with a mace or a pole axe. Yes, death is still very possible if you get hit too hard. You have to have a set of armor specifically made for the different centuries that you will be fighting in as.
I'm shocked by how light my own armour is compared to this stuff. My barbute for instance, is accurate to weight and thickness and comes in at 5lbs. That's nothing at all!
Right. If you think that this is nerdy then you must think that UFC is nerdy as well. This sport with its plate armors must be exhausting as hell. In my opinion it takes much more guts to step in this almost deadly massacre than to step in the octagon.

Andrew_Sorensen armor is like triple padded underneath, weapons are real but blunt(even in medieval times, sharp weapons couldn’t penetrate plate armor) and you win by not passing out of exhaustion basically. The matches can go on a while cause it ends when one person has had enough and hits the ground.
In a 1v1 (at least, the tournament I saw) there are pints calculated by how many times you hit the other one with the "sharp" part of the blade (blades are blunt)
I don’t know about rules but I know a fairly good bit about about medieval fighting and their armor and weapons look real and accurate enough to me. They don’t seem to have any formal training in the historical art of combat. It seems to be largely an endurance test

@@namethefifth7315don’t know if you’re the right person to ask, but how did the swords withstand so much impact while being so light?

Ehm no, it's really hard to kill a knight in full armour, mostly they were knocked out of combat, with big maces and hammers, cracking the armour if possibile or just making them unable to fight
Davide B. Eh no
Long swords and pole arms were the weapon of choice
The fights consisted of tiring out the other individual, getting them on their back, and finishing them off with a dagger.
Ateş Küresi So you’re saying they were knocking each other out unconscious, not slicing each other’s arms and necks?

Edit: And yes there is a Japanese team

Japanese armour against European shield/weapon tactics would result in hella internal injuries.
