That is amazing to me. Since I will never have the chance to work a tug... I really appreciate your giving me the chance to at least watch it up close. Your soft easy touch and perfect control is just unbelievable to me.
That takes me back, the early morning jobs on a clear day, the smell of a not yet warm diesel exhaust the rattle of cavitation and tea cups jangling. its a more high-tech world out there but I am glad I did the job.
Great videos Wil. Brings back a lot of memories for me. I grew up in Staten Island and as a kid we used to hang around the Moran tug yard on Richmond terrace. Later in my life I worked for Sealand deepsea, that was in the seventies. Man how things have changed. Hey congrats on your journey thru sobriety. Been there done that. Keep up the good work. Peace and grease Iggy p
I'm sitting here in Wiltshire in the U.K. in my office in my garden, miles from the ocean, watching this.... it's the second one I've watched now... for some reason I find it relaxing.... great job guys.
It's real cool to watch you work from the inside. I worked at APM terminal for almost 35 years. I watch you guys bring in so many ships it was always interesting watching you guys turn them around. enjoyed watching. If you would have had a UA-cam channel back then. I would have been yelling to you from the dock keep up the good work stay safe.
Nice to find your channel! I am from Brazil and I work as a freight forwarder.. As I am writing this comment the vessel Monte Verde carrying my cargo on it is berthed at NY Harbor. How cool is that! Thanks man and good luck! I am subscribing to your channel!
Hi Will So cool being I live right on the Jersey side of the Kill Van Kull just before the Bayonne bridge. Watch u guys go buy all the time. Thanks for the insight showing what actually goes on those harbor tugs!!
@@tugboatwilly843 UA-cam will always process the 360p version first because it can get the video out quicker. You as a creator have the option to put it in private for UA-cam to finish processing the higher quality vids. The longer the video the longer it takes them to kickout the higher quality. Usually it's about half the time of the total video or less unless the quality is up to 8K.
Well crud, you are making me question my career choices! I bet it's way more stressful than you make it look, but if you were my dad, You'd totally be the coolest Dad on parent's day!
Putting a pilot onto a moving boat has to be one of the most hazardous things in shipping. With the weather conditions seemingly to be nice, still nice to see. Well done.
New subscriber. Thanks for the inside look. A couple of questions if/when you have some time. First, I never realized just how disorienting it can be when alongside monster-sized vessels - I had a tough time telling when the tug was turning, when the ship was turning, and when both were turning. How do you stay oriented? Second: is there some sort of strain gauge that's on the capstan for the tow line which allows you to know just how much force you're putting forth - and perhaps more importantly, allows you to know how effectively you're working and how close you might be to snapping the line? Thanks in advance!
Yes there is a tonnage meter to let me know how hard I’m pulling. It’s really not hard to stay oriented probably the camera is messing with you. Thanks for watching 🤙
Much respect to you tug guys. When I was stationed on Submarine, USN, I was a topside line handler, y'all were great to work with and your monkey fist slinging skills were always pro-ball. Thanks for what you do. Its one of those jobs that are out there, but not out there, very much in the shadows. I don't think people really realize how dangerous your work is....The size of the Maersk hull next to your boat, and the small line holding that ship in place...alot going on at the same time and the levels of danger is through the roof, especially with that line right in your face like that. Kudos brother. Was your tug the only one that was working with that ship??
Thank you for your service! 3 tugs were on that job. Truly appreciate all you have done for us! Thanks for watching and respecting what we do as well! 🫡
Watching from Alabama but are familiar with McAllister was a river rat on a boat in Philadelphia called Jupiter end 567 with 2 6v71 gen’s loved it they were gazella Philadelphia non profit org
Super cool stuff. What’s the vibration/chatter noise around the 19 min mark? Big load on the line and the drives paddling hard in the water against it?
Ive published show video i took of Stick and several other bands and it shows it as copyrighted but that the artist allows it to be used somit doesnt get taken down. A little world on fire would make this even better.
@tugboatwilly843 same goes for Stoopid, Common Kings, basically the whole genre. If you check my channel you'll see the ones I've posted- and some good live show footage from around the area. A lot of Stone Pony shows.
thank you for sharing your work i came accross your channel yestarday, i have a question for you, how dose someone get into your job position/role? what do they need todo before getting behind the controls of a tug
Morning and thanks for watching! I made a short video about getting a job out here. I have some family in the industry so when I got out of high school they gave me a little push

Great audio in this video. Nice to hear the engines instead of the music, although I do enjoy your music. Question: how do you guys sleep through the cavitation in reverse?
Isn't this an odd parking position of the window wipers, in the middle of the glass? Is this deliberate? (I have the same but thats my mistake not configuring the parking position correctly on the side before covering the motors with carpentry.)

You can still smell it and the cups still jingle!
Love how this actually captures the vibrations with higher rpm
love the rumble of those engines!
What a cool job. Some people have jobs that wouldn’t feel like work to me. Beats sitting in a dang office.
Much appreciated Sir! Don’t believe I’d be any good behind a desk. Thanks for watching 🤙

Hell yeah!
Fantastic so interesting to see and hear this job from your perspective
Never seen the inside of a tug bridge before. Thats a cool workspace
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!

Enjoy watching your videos. Maybe you could explain in layman terms what's being said on radio, what it means and what you do after that. Thanks.
You have a great job!
Much appreciated 🤙
Great videos and like someone previously said calming. I find the controls of the boat very interesting obviously requiring experience.
and a lot of the time nerves of steel, I'd bet
Thanks guys!! Appreciate y’all watching

TIE-Tug to Maersk: "I have you now"
Pew Pew
Even in calm conditions, I could NEVER be the captain that climbs that rope latter up the side of the ship! Oh Hell no!! 😲
Same here 😱

Got to come play on the Miss River in New Orleans
A ship came into harbour carrying a ship ton of ⛳
What an office view 👍

Super cool stuff. What’s the vibration/chatter noise around the 19 min mark? Big load on the line and the drives paddling hard in the water against it?
Exactly. I was backing on the line. The harder you pull the more you get of that. Thanks for watching!
Out of curiosity, how many knots can you get out of that tug
A little over 15 is as fast as I’ve had her
How hard is it to be a tug boat captain? It looks really fun and that boat looks really epic!
It takes some years and experience. It if fun if you enjoy being out here
Really cool. Does the larger rumble vibrations primarily happen when pulling against a load in reverse? Is it the prop-wash going under the boat?
Exactly. Thanks for watching!
Great video Cap, thanks! Do you go out on July 4th into the harbor for the fireworks? If you do can/will you film some of it for your Vlog?
I’ll do my best!
Your microphone is fantastic. Super immersive. Fun to watch. Are you ex-Navy or did you go to the Maritime Academy?
Hey Now! Thank you! I just worked my way up from the deck.
cool video, but it would be awesome to have another camera on the outside of the boat

I agree! The sound of those powerful engines spooling down!
how big of a boat can you drive? what's the biggest boat your licensed for?

That’s as far to one side that they go. I feel ya tho
@@tugboatwilly843Great cockpit otherwise 👍
What is the tensile strength of those lines? Those things must be insanely strong.
I know it’s over 90 tons probably 110 range
✌👍
💯🫡
Really enjoy your videos. Though a lapel microphone of some kind would make it easier to hear you when you aren’t holding the camera.
enjoy the video but couldn't hear much maybe you could wear a lapel mike?

Thanks for the compliment. No my family definitely does not own the company. I’ve been on the tugs for 20 years
Lousy audio volume;
need captions please !
Can't imagine the insurance these tugs must carry to cover their ass. These tug contracts have to be big numbers.
Not sure the number but I’m positive it’s a lot. Thanks for watching 🤙
Can't play music or UA-cam will copyright strike you, unless it's free to use music and stuff...
Cool video. Get a wireless microphone with money from videos.
Did YT give you shit about the music? Such a PITA. I feel like the industry kind of hurt themselves on that front.
They did but it’s all good. Thanks for watching 🫡
