A bear will eat the head and the skin of the salmon, and throw the rest back. Meanwhile I can only find salmon filets in the store. Maybe we should breed bears for tameness and have them fish for us? :D
I watched your coverage from U.S with great passion. Wow, it very great to see how they fish and dry the stock fish we all enjoy in our soup. They leave the fish out to air dry for three good months, can you believe that!
We can hardly find stockfish in Norway in the stores, very irritating. They sell the dog food quality, to feed dogs. And in very small bags, as a snack. The prices are beyond all comprehension for those small bags. I guess the import duty in Nigeria also drives up the prices considerably. I am happy that you like our stockfish, and I hope the Government can ease the taxes so it will be available for more people.
I could not believe that the Norwegians remove the head and dry them separate. My wife mentioned the head is the best part of the stock fish wow. It is very good to explore the world and know what is on the ground zero of every corners of the world. Stock fish has been the best fish for making Igbo traditional soup. Fabulous.
Does not really smell bad, just smells peculiar or different. Does not stinck, either! Saved a lot of lifes at a point in time in naija story; who still remembers?
I went to Tromso to look for the Northen Light, I was amazed at the fish that were being dried. I later found out that it's the same favourite fish that I grew up eating as a Nigerian.
Thanks for the documentary. However, I found it incomplete that you didn't go to the Nigerian customs and relevant government officials to ask them why the high duty and other difficulties that associate with this business. Again I would have loved that you intimate your guest in Norway that the it is the Igbos that buys stock fish in bulk allover the world.
Nigerians consume this stock fish more than any other country in the world I guess. There is a big market in Onitsha dedicated to only the sale of stockfish.

Nigeria and Norway has a very uniquely special relationship? You mean the kind where Nigeria spends at least $125 million into Norway yearly income? And how much income does Nigeria get from Norway, what are we exporting to them? Nothing! Wake up Nigerians and stop being taken for a ride.
Norway give away several million of dollars to Nigeria as support. Nigeria need to produce stuff and sell it to other nations. Just like Norway does. Every nation in the world trades for cheaper goods, or goods they dont have.
It varies by quality and where you buy.. So around 20 to 135+ USD per kg. Dog food quality 20 USD/kg Standard quality 30-50 USD/kg Prima quality filet and snacks 135+ USD/kg
Edgardo Paulique We are not enriching Norway, rather the Norwegians are nourishing us with healthy, cholesterol and transfats free, with good source of protein and omega 3.
Hello from Norway! You guys are not makeing us rich. In the best years (2014 and 2015) we exported fish for 127.3 million U.S. dollars to Nigeria, which half of it were Stockfish and other half mackerel. In 2016 Norway had 211.5 billion U.S. dollars in revenues. So fish export to Nigeria account for only 0.06% of our revenue. Even though we sold fish for 127.3 million, our fishing companies have huge expenses that the money has to cover. I can imagine that the income is approximately 8-12% of total revenue, then income will be about 10.2 to 15.3 million before tax. Please do not misunderstand. We are very happy with this trade and glad that more than Norwegians have the opportunity to taste this delicacy! Kind regards to all Nigerians. :)
Why do you people like to spread misinformation. Do you know the GDP of Norway? Have you actually calculated the revenue that is derived from the Stock fish trade by Norway, and the minuscule amount the trade with Nigeria contributes. All you conspiracy theorists, must you bring your negative spin to everything to do with any group of people.
Nwaada Biafra we are because the fish is not free of charge we pay them for it. Is like saying America buying Nigeria oil is not making Nigeria rich. Fish is part of their country revenue just as oil is part of Nigeria revenue.
Stockfish, as shown and described in the video is called Panla in Yoruba language. In Igbo language it is called Okporoko. Most Igbos and other Nigerians who grew up in Lagos or interacted/traded with Yorubas also call it Panla in the southeast of Nigeria.
Can we look at the positive side of this noble act please. The lady took time out to show us how stock fisg, which we have enjoyed for generations, is processed. Please appreciate her.
Estrella Philibosian, thanks for your question. they dry it so it can last longer and is edible n tasty after exportation... in Norway, most people do not dry it, they cook it fresh n it's delicious

This film is just an advertisement and promotion for this useless stinking fish, which Norwegians themselves will never eat, instead, they feed it to their dogs and cats. Stank Fiske (Stinking Fish), as Scandinavians call it, has no nutritional value and when you visit the processing farm (which I have been to) at certain times of the year, it is full of flies and smells to high heavens. Ndigbo developed the craving for it during the Nigerian/Biafran Civil war because it was their only source fish product and sometimes, salt during that very difficult period.
You are wrong. We do eat dried fish as a snack but it is very expensive. We usually eat the fish fresh now. But before refrigeration we ate dried fish becouse it last so long. The fish is very healthy and is good quality. You dont know what you are talking about. We make dogfood from beef, pig, fish and chicken. If the fish has no nutritional value then how can the dog survive and humans survive and grow from it?
Absolutely, best part of the fish is the head.

Stockfish, as shown and described in the video is called Panla in Yoruba language.
In Igbo language it is called Okporoko.
