Both fought with a beastly fervor, then once both realized what they were looking for was by them/in them, they regained their humanity and fought with honor until they are ultimately defeated

Lore wise: he’s probably relieved/in joy at seeing the HMS. It was on him the whole time of the fight, but in this moment of danger/near death, the sword came to life on its own (the little dots are living entities) and talked to Ludwig once more, giving him the strength to continue. Thats why he calls it his mentor, since it would keep him focused, guided, and calm during the hunts he partook in.
He’s actually harder to me in this form, especially in NG+8 where pretty much everything one shots you. I have his first phase down to a tee, I can run it getting hit maybe once, but this shit? Super hard for me idk why
It took me just as long to beat his first form as his second in my first playthrough. But now his second is easier. Except that lightning quick double sword flick attack he does in phase 2 that must've killed me a dozen times on my bl4 run.
This is basically what horah loux did in reverse and I love it, I can imagine him being like “I’ve given thee torment enough, now I fight as Ludwig, the holy blade.”
You can only be part of soulsborne if you have these things in it. Moonlight greatsword or an equivalent of the legendary blade- Poison areas- Patches the npc- Coop and pvp as a game mode. -F***ing dogs And human/humanoid characters that are barefooted For miyazaki.

By far my favourite boss in soulsborne. The way this cursed creature regains his humanity and fights with everything he has. Dies with the body of a wretched monstrosity but the soul of a man. So awesome.
Because he's too far gone to really "regain his humanity," what the sword is doing is giving him just the briefest moment of clarity even in his heavily degraded state, and as he said it was "merely a hair, a fleeting thing, but I clung to it steeped as I was in the scent of blood and beasts." The power of the sword can only last so long, and if he just tried to keep living he would just begin degrading again until finally reaching the point where even the eldritch power of the sword could no longer hold some final scrap of his humanity within himself. So instead he chooses to die as a man, wielding a blade to face a powerful foe and meeting his end against the hunter.

It's entirely possible that the sword may have unintentionally set him on a path of blood-drunkenness, and Damned him to the Hunter's Nightmare. Ludwig, the Holy Blade is being sung in the perspective of the Moonlight Greatsword. It's guilty at leading it's student (The lyrics literally say it was Ludwig's mentor) astray, and wants the Hunter to slay Ludwig so that he won't have to suffer anymore.
I think it says something about us as hunters as well. How our weapons are our true compass, not Gehrman, the church and its blood, Bergenwyrth and it’s eyes inside, any of the old ones, covens or our own morality, but our trusty melee and guns forging a true path for us to end the nightmare.
Is it a good idea to put “you are my guiding moonlight” into wedding vows? Husband does not play bloodbourne but I find the line so charming. Thinking of saying this when I renew my vows later this year.
