Mangos (or mangoes if you prefer) are becoming more and more popular both for fresh eating as well as in prepared dishes such as salads, sushi, as well as garnishes.
What happens if you can only get mangos that aren’t ripe yet? Can you speed up the ripening a bit? Yes - but it is exactly that - an improvement in ripening time that is only slight.
We tried 4 methods. One was left on the counter, one was wrapped in plastic wrap, one was put in a paper bag with an apple, closed and put on the counter, and the final one was buried in flour. After almost 5 days, the one in the plastic wrap and left untreated on the counter weren’t close to ripe. Both the flour-submerged and bagged mangos were ripe and ready to process.
The lesson learned? While you can speed up ripening a bit, it is still not a speedy process. You are much better off buying mangos that are ripe are almost ripe.

Great thing about mangoes is they can be eaten at any stage of ripeness. Green ones make great pies use apple pie recipe for firm tart apples. In Venezuela the natives liked them over ripe. They would bite off an end and suck the flesh out.

Thanks Auntie! This is great and I now know to wrap in plastic when you buy them in bulk from Costco will slow the process. 😁 Paper bag and an apple is good for so many ways to help ripen fruit.

Pineapples, bananas and tomatoes ripen after being picked all the other fruits deteriorate not ripen. There is a big difference - fruit generally must be picked ripe for most of its benefits. Picking unripe fruit and waiting for it to soften does not mean it is more ripe, it means it is rotting. If a green banana turns yellow it is reaching it's ripe stage as you can also pick yellow bananas - if you pick a strawberry or an apple or any other fruit at a stage before ripeness and it doesn't reach the color of a fully ripened stage (eat ready when picked) then the softness is due to the rotting process. Strawberries don't get more red but they get more soft..that is rotting.
    Love your videos though :)

As soon as the fruit is picked it begins to rot. Ripening is just the early stages of rotting, it just depends on where you like it so that you can catch it in time.Sometimes one day can make a difference; one day it will be ripe but just 24 hours later it can be rotten.I like fruits like: avocados, mangos and bananas to be slightly soft to the touch, that means they are at their maximum sweetness!😋

In India we keep them in boxes of hay or else wrap them in old newspaper. Works like magic.

You forgot to wash the stuff off the Apple that they spray on them to keep them fresh longer so they don’t spoil on the truck

Thanks for the tip. We bought a Star fruit (never tried one before) and left it on the counter for about 5 days It didn't make much progress ripening from its original greenish yellow color. It started to turn brownish yellow toward the last couple of days so we cut it up and ate it. It was OK, but it probably could have been better. Because we have never tried a Star fruit before, we have nothing to base the results on other than what a ripe Star fruit looks like from an Internet search. We'll try the paper bag and apple method next time.

Just like an avocado, remove the stems, if it doesn't have any then just cut a small plug out of where it should be to speed up the ripening process!

Yes, indeed, that's another approach, you just need to be sure you rotate the fruit to prevent burn, and watch for overheating and subsequent spoiling. Thanks for watching, SMTG!

Mangoes turn yellow when they are ripe. Red is NOT the color of ripe for a mango. And soft is not necessarily ripe.
