I'm one of the oldies, I was a small child when Star Wars came out in the late 70's, I think many of us were initially disappointed with the prequels because we expected a repeat of 1977 and of course that didn't happen. Looking back at it we were being silly, there will never be a repeat of the 1977 hysteria because the success of Star Wars had much to do with the time it was released, the world was a grim place in 1977, the economy was a mess and we were facing the real threat of nuclear annihilation, into that came a bold movie about hope which really struck a chord with many people.

the clone wars is what made me appreciate the prequels a lot more, that show gave so much more depth that was needed for the characters and made palpatine feel that much more menacing

    • @n.k.63
      @n.k.63 4 роки тому +42

Personally, don't get the fascination people have with show. I'm not saying it's bad, far from it, it's really good and much better than the Rebels... But if you think about it, it really doesn't fit between the two movies, way too many events happen in them, such as Anakin having an apprentice, Maul coming back, etc, they also retcon a lot of stuff, for example, the clones having a chip and not just being trained to follow orders, which I feel is a cheap cop-out to make the show characters more likable and not portray them as actual murder machines that they are.
I personally think that Gendy Tarkovski's cartoons did a much better job in portraying the events of the war, and sticking closely to the established lore, while still expanding it a little. The characters are not as flashed out, but they stay in character, and I appreciate it.
But I do think the Clone Wars show is lots of fun, though, i just don't think it's the holy grail that redeemed the prequels, it's just a fun side content. It does ultimately show how much potential the world created by Lucas had, I can't imagine anything like this done for the sequels.

    • @5t3v3n12343211
      @5t3v3n12343211 4 роки тому +22

      N. K. I agree with you that way to many events happen in this time span between Ep2 and 3. I think this may be because the creators know this is probably the only show to actually expand the universe in the way the Clone wars show does. It’s not like a show will be made between the events of Ep1 and 2, so this is they’re only chance to flesh out the characters in this time period. Which This leads to a whole bunch of events jammed packed into a somewhat small time frame.
On the other hand maybe it just goes to show how expansive the galaxy is. These numerous event that happens during the clone wars, lets the viewers know that the war is impacting 10s of 100s of planets with intelligent life.
I haven’t seen anything else than the clone wars show bc the expanded universe ie: Rebels and Resistamce have not suited my taste and I hear they don’t get better.
The clone wars isnt the best show in the world, but with respect to shows/world building pertaining to Star Wars, the clone wars show is the best. Which might be why the creators put all their ideas into this show because they know the won’t get a second chance in the same era.

See, I enjoyed parts of the Clone Wars et al, but to me that's how the prequels should have been, not how they were. If Lucas had made that instead, I wouldn't be excited but I wouldn't hate it.
Now, "The Mandalorian" is what should have been made instead. Or sequel movies, but Carrie's drug and mental problems were serious, and Harrison was done with it all, so they would have had to focus on the remaining cast - and maybe look at a romance story for Luke, as it was in the expanded universe.

    • @StellaHamms
      @StellaHamms 4 роки тому +9

Flatheads Rebuked Well, it’s not just desires, really. It also includes anger, and greed, and stuff. To server these ties are the only way to get to what is considered Nirvana. But, yes, Buddhists have had desires. Buddha... didn’t. He was more of a... used to have? I mean, according to all the time he spent, he did have those in his past lives and even before becoming actual Buddha, and he was human, after all. Buddha isn’t a god, he’s a human, and he was still affected by his past lives and their karma, such as back pain because he broke someone’s back when he was a boxer, and so on. And so do Buddhists. However, to achieve peace, you sever the ties of human desire, human greed, human anger. That’s the actual way to peace, so it says. Buddhism may be failing, but not because it’s wrong, it’s just that... it’s nearly impossible to do *all* of that. For a normal human. And rarely can many do. Even if some do so, it doesn’t mean they *will* achieve peace. But they’ll be somewhere better, and only further if they continue there, more and more on further and further, they can be at peace. It’s a lot more than having faith in someone and asking them for help, as Buddhism is basically an atheist religion where even Buddha himself said God doesn’t exist. Instead, you have to follow the steps of Buddha, in his ways to be in a better place. Though... the thing is, to become the Buddha(one more left, forgot the earlier Buddha name), the last Buddha had to go through four.. I dunno how to explain it, but it’s even longer than one million earths, that’s certain, and one hundred thousand Earths. To become Buddha. And do things and make sure you become Buddha by doing good things and stuff, and even Buddha did not do good things in some past lives. This is why you see Buddhism “failing”. Because to be essentially at peace, it’s *so* much work, but not as much to become Buddha. But it’s still way too many.
I don’t wanna start a religion argument, I’m just gonna say this, you can say no, or you can say something as counter point. I hope we can have a civil discussion, and... yeah, sorry for the too long paragraph.
Tl;dr: It’s not just desires, it’s also too much work and it is... Ironic.

I don't think they're afraid of emotion, nor did they wish to abandon it (a Jedi is encouraged to love, as Anakin once said), and be a mindless droid, what they want is to control their emotion, and abandon attachment, because it will control you, rather than you control it, so the Jedi wish to free themselves from it, and attachment is not only to an object, or a person, but also to an outcome, when a Jedi failed, they do not dwell on it, also when they succeed, they would still be happy, but they would not let it get on their head, unlike the "Jedi" from the prequel, they're more like a force-wielding tools for the republic rather than a Jedi

After the sequels people wanted to convince themselves Lucas would have done a better job, not realizing their hate for the prequels is why Lucas sold Lucasfilm. The prequels mostly do that but good story told poorly. The new films have become to corporate to capture "that star wars magic" yet the Mandalorian and Rebels got that because Disney seem to have taken a more hands off approach with those ones letting Filoni and Favreau run free. But the sequel films just feel like nostalgia check boxes to make us go wow and I don't like that. The prequels don't throw nostalgia at you they do something different and it's good. The reason the last Jedi is the best of the Sequels is cause it did something else other than be a remake of episode 5.

I'm one of the RARE individuals who was old enough to experience the original trilogy, as it hit, and yet still appreciate the Prequels (because they satisfied my addiction for Star Wars, which had gone nearly 20 years without any tidings). That being said, I still can't stand to watch "The Phantom Menace" prior to the final lightsaber duel. And "Attack of the Clones" is only good for me in small doses. But I loved "Revenge of the Sith!" I honestly wish that THAT was Episode I, and Episodes II and III were segments of galactic life under the "new order" of Palpatine. You know, just a long tragic tale of how Darth Vader came to grips with how he destroyed everything that was good, and killed his wife. And how a Rebellion was actually born from the ashes of the Republic. That would have been GLORIOUS to watch! How many Star Wars fans would actually be OBSESSED with the Prequel Trilogy if that was the direction it went in???

One main criticisms I have with the Last Jedi is that it does not feel like Star Wars. Superficially, it looks and sounds like Star Wars but many die hard fans including myself did not feel like we were watching a Star Wars movie when viewing Episode 8. It lacks the spirit, themes, and originality of the original Star Wars.
Say what you will about the prequels, but they always felt like Star Wars, a plausible expansion to the Original Trilogy. The morals and messages of prequels always fell in line with the OT, the only criticism one could have is in the execution of those messages.
I cannot extend that sentiment to the Last Jedi which feels so detached from the rest of Star Wars. This was deliberate of course as Rian Johnson himself constantly referenced "subversion" as his storytelling technique of choice. The problem I and many other fans have is that if you subvert everything special about a story, you threaten to make everything that came before pointless and meaningless.
Seeing the Last Jedi just opened our eyes to how bad a Star Wars movie really can be. The one compliment I will give Episode 8 is that at least it made people realize the prequels are not that bad in comparison.

I'll be a little specific atleast from my perspective. The prequels suffered from poor casting and poor dialog. But the core ideas and the core story all led up to a single point, the fall of the Jedi. There was no SJW agenda. There was no disrespecting of the established canon. I thought of doing so for about 10 mins araound halfway through the film, but I literally chose to "be brave" and stay to the very end... I was even worried for JJ Abrams! Imagine how dumbfolded I was when lots of people were cheering for it in the internet. But I did feel extremely disappointed, in a way that I had never felt with any film. Not with Marvel, not even with The Hobbit and the really fan-fictionish parts. Some people may think I'm exaggerating, but that's how I felt... It felt like 100% fanfiction and nothing like a true SW film. TFA was okay, with some very bad parts, but I guess it was more bearable since I was already disappointed of the whole story. It's not just Anakin's lightsaber breaking apart that ruined Star Wars, there's also the fact that they disrespected Luke Skywalker (both the character and Mark Hamill). First, they leave him out of EP7, then they make him into a cowardly, suicidal old bastard in 8, they demonized him by making him the cause of Kylo Ren's turn to the dark side, and they kill him off to add insult to injury.
They also disrespected Han Solo by killing him off too soon (I know Harrison Ford wanted him to die but couldn't the filmmakers hold that thought until EP9?) and they disrespected Leia by not making her a Jedi as it was hinted in Return of the Jedi. What's worse is that Carrie Fisher isn't around to do 9 so now most fans feel cheated.

Thor, you state your age as 41 which means you were born in 1978. 1 year after the original came out. I'm 52 and can clearly remember seeing A New Hope in November of 1977. I was 11 at the time. So the impact on me was massive. I enjoyed the prequels from day 1 but, and this is something you didn't mention, in the original novelization of ANH,which was credited to George Lucas, but actually ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster, there is a 2 page prologue which mentions Palpatine by name and talks about how he was aided and abetted by "restless, power hungry individuals within the government and the massive organs of commerce", which pretty much describes the plot of the prequel trilogy minus the Anakin story which did not exist at the time. The thing is Lucas was consistent in his vision in the prequel he had had the story mapped out for years and he told that story. Granted, it wasn't executed as well as it could have been but i still appreciated the scope and the worldbuilding he was able to achieve in them. So, for me at least, the original trilogy has a special place in my heart because i'm old enough to have seen them in theaters unaltereed. So. the prequels don't have the sense of nostalgia the originals did but, to me, they are still good movies despite their flaws.

I love reading all this reminiscing about the Original Trilogy and it just reminded my first experience with it in 1997 when I was 8, yes I know it wasn't the original release, I went to the cinemas and they were replaying older films and one of the was the Star Wars Trilogy and I was excited and I felt the same awe in that cinema seeing the Imperial Destroyer for the first time even though I am only just 30, and I hoped my children could experience the same thing but it is just not going to happen. Those days are over and you are lucky to get an old film played in the cinemas.
Ever since first seeing Darth Vader chocking Captain Antilles and watching R2-D2 and C-3PO navigating those halls, I had a favorite movie and I have never left, I prefer the OT but love the PT and I do find its flaws a part of its charms. Ever since I have gone down the rabbit hole and I have loved KotOR 1 and 2 which captured the twist and morality of the OT and I have enjoyed many of the games loved the comics and I have been wanting to read the books but access to them here is just non existant.
I am disappointed in the ST because it feels empty, hollow... like sn insult to the original fans unlike the PT which were respectful while trying to cater to a new audience. But the ST is trying to Replace the old fans. It fails to capture the depth or the morality and brushes over or does away with established lore and charachter development. I have many issues with them.
But none the less I will allways love the OT and PT as well as the old games and comics abd I want to get into the novels.

Then the Disney Star Wars movies came out. And now I see while the prequels are flawed, they still told an original story and most importantly WERE RESPECTFUL TO THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY. George actually tried with episodes 1-3. Unlike Jar Jar Abrams and Rian "I'll never work in Hollywood again" Johnson.
George put blood, sweat, and tears into the prequels and after seeing the travesty of what we have now, I think it finally shows. I think now even if you still hate the prequels you can at least admit they are:
    1. Better than the disney sequels
    2. Better for Star Wars canon

Firstname Lastname i was the same as I had major problems with the PT for the longest time. But Disney SW opened my eyes to how much we take Lucas storytelling for granted. The PT had a micro/macro arc of The rise of Palpatine/Empire and the downfall of Anakin/Republic. I can’t think of what the ST arc is for the story or characters and that’s the problem.
While the PT still has execution problems, I have come to appreciate the movies more now. Maybe Lucas was the Phantom Menace selling to Disney knowing they’d screw it up and fans like us would re-evaluate the PT? Lol

I think that tfa is a great movie, a few scenes aside. Which is the same thing I can say about episodes 2 and 3. Episode 1 is a struggle to like.
Full context, I grew up after the hype had died. Loved episode 5 enjoyed 6 and tolerated 4 instead of loved because it was slower. I thought it was interesting that I enjoyed episode 4 as an adult Way more than kid me who didn't like the slow roll of the movie. Of course I liked it, the falcon and lightsabers and Luke blowing up the death star, but I like all three at the same level now.
Saying all that to say this, when asked which sw movie I want to watch, its 4, 5,6 or 7. I wonder if that will change again years from now when 7 isn't a "new refreshing film" for me.
And to throw salt about carelessly, the only good thing from 8 was the Rey and Ben talks through the force. But in full context it isn't even discovery if snoke linked them now is it. That fucking director I swear to God!

Then the prequels came out and I grew up with them and they made me love Star Wars so much more. I feel like I liked the OT just generally as movies but the prequels got me invested in the characters, story and lore. I'd always loved Darth Vader's redemption in ROTJ so I loved seeing Anakin's tragic rise and fall and he's still my favourite character in the whole saga. Revenge of the Sith is probably my second favourite SW movie and it churns my emotions like none of the other movies do.

Everyone seemed to rip on these films hardcore mostly because "OMIGAWD TEH LIFELESS CG" and "OMIGAWD SAND EVERYWHERE LUL WHAT HORRIBLE WRITING", but the CG thing never _really_ bothered me (even though I do still prefer practical effects) and...come on guys, seriously, we're attacking the _prequel_ films for having uniquely bad writing and dialogue? Alec Guinness himself expressed frustration over the - in his words - "banal" nature of the dialogue in the original trilogy. Hell, storywise they're basically carbon copies of various Kurasawa films. Can we all just take off our rose tinted glasses and admit that, while the original trilogy is fantastic and comprises some of the most important movies ever made, maybe it WASN'T PERFECT? That's probably the best thing about the sequel trilogy, in fact; I was always a little annoyed by how over the top the hate was for the prequels, and it's good that people can finally see that there was a LOT of merit to them. Especially in terms of worldbuilding; I think that the Clone Wars era was WAY more interesting than the Civil War Era, because the Civil War was just good guys VS Bad guys, whereas in the Clone Wars Era you had 'heroes on both sides', where there were some well meaning sepratists, and of course corrupt and evil members of the Republic, yet the Republic were still seen as the 'good' guys. I think JJ Abrams constant prequel bashing was pretty shameful, and just goes to highlight how only George Lucas and Dave Filoni have really done Star Wars justice on-screen.

However, my dad was born into and lived in the era of the originals.
He knew the prequel trilogy was my era of Star Wars while the classics where his. He had me watch the originals first since that was when they where canonically released but he also showed me the prequel trilogy.
While he wasn't as big of a fan of the 'new' (at the time) Star Wars, he knew that I lived them and had the same effect on me as a kid as the original trilogy had on him.

The ST have nothing. We don't care about rey, we don't care about Finn, we don't care about rose or Poe as main characters in a trilogy of SW. 3:09 I'm going to have to disagree here. There were absolutely moments when George Lucas was challenged on his ideas. A couple of examples which come to mind: Lucas originally didn't much like the idea of doing a GCI Yoda, but he was convinced after some renderings were shown to him. Another example yet again involves Yoda: There was a moment in Revenge of the Sith where Yoda throws his saber at a clone trooper, and while the trooper is impaled with the lightsaber, Yoda leaps to the trooper and "pulls" the lightsaber from the trooper. Lucas originally thought this was too violent, but he was convinced by those around him to keep it in the film.
Now, I think you can successfully argue that on the whole, Lucas; ideas weren't challenged that much, but it's also a myth to claim he was only surrounded by "yes" people. Furthermore, with some issues, such as dialogue, Lucas intentionally wrote them as bad or campy (and he knew this!) in an effort to emulate the Flash Gordon serials he idolized so much. Now, was it a good idea to do that? The answer is probably "no," but for me, I think it adds a certain charm to the films. I don't think he ever set out to make the greatest movies ever; just fun movies that everyone could enjoy. Perhaps some people took them too seriously, and I know I've been guilty of taking these movies too seriously sometimes.

The funny thing is, Attack of the Clones was always my favorite. If there is one thing I would change in that movie, it's that I would make Anakin jump out of the window to catch the droid who brought the killer worms and not Obi-wan. I felt like that's more of padawan Anakin thing to do.
In Revenge of the Sith, I love the first part of the scene, where Windu and Jedi masters come to arrest Palpatine. I hated the fight itself, it was really badly done, which is a shame, because it had the potential to be one of the best jedi lightsaber combats ever. Four jedi masters against one sith lord.
The thing I loved about prequels is that it developed jedi combat. And we could see a mass jedi battle, jedi leading troopers, 2vs1, Yoda vs Dooku, Yoda vs Palpatine, etc. It wasn't just the old 1 vs 1. I'm sad that Disney Trilogy brought nothing new to the saga in this department...

I am technically not in the age bracket that grew up with the OT, but it still where I got my introduction to Star Wars. It was still somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon when I was growing up, we are talking the mid 90s. I can recall it was doing a TV run in my country and the tv-adds for it fascinated me greatly, but my parents would not let me watch it. So I did what children. I found another way. Actually saving up little bits of money and going out and buying it for myself, this was the original widescreen release of the OT. After that it became a defining thing for my childhood. This was also true for a lot of my friends. So Star Wars, while old at the time was still defining for my childhood.
Now if I want to analyze where that put me, well it makes it a bit complicated. For one I had a strong bond with the OT and it's presentation, but I was still a child, about 13 years of age, when the Phantom Menace came out. But oh boy has it been a roller coaster ride. I can distinctly remembering watching the Phantom Menace in the cinemas. I was absolutely baffled. Because it felt all wrong. It was so far away from my expectations. The world felt so different. Everything was shiny and full of color. This was not the drab and grey run down universe that we were introduced to in the OT. It was not my Star Wars. But I still loved Star Wars, and I can distinctly remembering watching Attack of the Clones and liking it more. Having rewatched all the movies several times since then and considered my mental state at the time. I have decided this was due to my expectations having adjusted. Between the time of the release of Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith I also got a lot more invested in the expanded universe. I started reading books and comics and found a new love for the world building of the prequel trilogy. So much so, that I would argue it is the best thing we got out of the prequels. Even if my initial reaction to the world building of the prequels was one of disdain. Delving further into characters like Darth Maul, Quinlan Vos and Aura Sing, well in a way it's some of the best things Star Wars has created, in my opinion of course.
In total though I also feel like I have a very different love for the prequels than most OT fans. F. ex. I think that Revenge of the Sith is the worst movie. Yes we all loved seeing Darth Vader appear or the set up for the OT. But the worst aspects of the prequel trilogy has to be all the terrible dialogue between Padme and Anakin. And I just feel like all that dialogue was so much more integral for the story of that movie than the ones before. I really feel like it is the one that suffered the most for it. And on the flip side The Phantom Menace is my favorite. And I am constantly baffled that it still is considered the worst of the prequels by so many. I can understand that people did not like Jar Jar, but the hate for him seems out of line. But especially since this is the only movie that is centered around Qui-Con Gin and Obi-Wan. Which both did a great job. Liam Neeson is hard not to love and I think most of us agree that Ewan was great as Obi-Wan the whole way through. Something I am reminded of everytime I rewatch them. Ewan is great and I can enjoy the movies just by watching his arc. I don't need to get too invested in Anakin, because I know he gets more interesting down the line.
Well this became a wall of text and I am late to the party. So it's probably not relevant. As to the question posed. I think you are probably pretty spot on with your conclusion. I do however ponder if not more people will have a complicated relationship to these movies regardless. I did not get to be part of the poll. But I would have had a really hard time answering it, because on different levels I feel like all of the answers could apply to me in one way or another.
Like I used to hate it, then I accepted it, but I found a love for the world building early on. I love Ewan McGregors take on Obi-Wan. I like Palpatine, can't stand Hayden's Anakin most of the time, nor Padme. Mostly due to the terrible dialouge.
Honestly I feel like I can still say I hate it, I can still say I love it, I can say I like it more now and I can say I like it less now. It's a big jumbled mess. But overall I am still grateful for them. So I probably like them quite a bit more than I dislike them.

i think one of the main things that i think makes the prequels better for me was that i watched them in my native language, and german voice actors are superb and i actually think in this case they actually elevated the lines and delivered them better than the OG actors did.

Despite having been born in 1990, I actually grew up with the original trilogy. My father, who has always been a great fan, made his kids watch the original trilogy on VHS. By the time Episode I came out, I had already watched the originals a dozen times each. I even saw the original version before the Special Edition, which we obviously also watched multiple times after my father bought it.

And your dad will agree with Thor and myself who is older than him, just how big Star Wars was for us when it came out. I'm 43 now and am still obsessed by it and probably always will be. And yet I can still say that I detest some of the films, for which AOTC is one. And thats perfectly fine, it doesn't mean I'll stop watching them, or stop watching whatever is released next in the SW universe.

Thank you so much for such a well reasoned and fair assessment of the prequels and how “we” feel about them. It feels so complicated, but I appreciate how you were able to summarize it so well. As an old-school Star Wars fan who was disappointed by the sequels and the prequel’s, I agree with everything you said

I know I’m alone on this but, I like the prequels SLIGHTLY more than the originals, just bc of the word building and setting the stage for 4-6, but mind you I’m 23 so I grew up on the prequel trilogies and idolized Darth maul
