- If you need a background, a reflector, a room divider, or a flag to block light, the V-Flat can do all of that and more. These simple black and white folded boards are super useful and, in this video photographer, Gavin Hoey will show how he uses them in his small home studio.
If you need to know how to stop lens flare without reaching for Photoshop or Lightroom, Gavin’s first setup is what you need. Using two V-Flats, Gavin creates a dramatic high contrast, rim-lit portrait. After that, Gavin switches to the white side of the V-Flat to bounce light into a pair of reflective ski goggles and then adds a sprinkling of snow with a little bit of Photoshop magic.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - Навчання та стиль
Gavin, Calling you a master at your craft is an understatement. Brrrrilliant shooting in the snow!
Gavin, you are the best model .
Just.............Just.................wowsers!
Thanks Samantha 👍
Gavin your wealth of knowledge makes it seem so easy and straightforward! Being learning from your videos so much
Bravo... Mr Hoey, you are the best ..
V flats are extremely useful for small home studios. And they are easy to make as well, with some foam board from the dollar store and gaffer tape. I cut one into sections and hot glued an edge on the top so I can stack them as high as I want. And being cheap, you can make tons.
Watch your videos make me travel back in time 10 or 12 years Gavin!. Allways is a very nice experience. At the end of the video I noticed went smiling all the time.
Cheers
It's 2021 and you're still the best!
Those new C-Stands are looking swell!
Thanks Mark. I'm loving the little 20" version... Just my size 😁
@@GavinHoey hahahha. You’re winning at life.
@@GavinHoey I think Mark is a little bit jealous of your impressive studio...hehehe
Awesome video Gavin. You always provide some great inspiration. I made a v-flat by taping 6 white foam core boards purchased for $1 each at a discount store. Now I can see the advantages of using a black side, so I may splurge and purchase 6 black foam core boards to tape on the backside. And who knows, there may be an awesome model available in the discount store that I can buy to help me out as much as Polly helped you.
So well explained & demonstrated. Thank you!
Ever resourceful... nothing can stop Gavin!
Thanks, I made a makeshift V flat, recycling a large cardboard wardrobe that my neighbor wanted to throw away. I stapled balk paper on one side and painted the other side white. Now you've taught me a few new ways to use them. Cute hat
Gavin rules!!
Gavin, you're a genius and a beautiful model all at the same time. Very creative to get that final image in this Covid lockdown.
You’re awesome Gavin.. always get a chuckle while watching your videos and your shots are pretty cool! 😊
Wonderful. Your content always ups my game. I can't wait to make a few for my home studio. Thanks for the video.
Polly the polystyrene head lol 😋😊 Brilliant, I'm V glad I watched this tutorial 😀
Great video as always! Love how creative you've been even on lock down.
Brilliant as always! Thank you, Gavin....
Great demo and examples! I learned quite a bit from this , keep up the good work
Fun tutorial Gavin! Thanks for the lesson and for the action as well.
That was great , love the final image as well ... thank you
I see I am not the only one who asked about the V-Flats. Glad Gavin pointed out how heavy they are. I think I am going to use these Polystyrene-Foam-Board-Insulation found at the Home improvement store. We have a Lowes or Home Depot in our area. The ones I prices were only $12 a piece! So much more affordable than the ones sold premade.
Simply you are a genius!
Excellent, Gavin!!
Another outstanding inspirational tutorial. I am encouraged to either buy or make some V-Flats.
I am making mine, decent ones are so expensive. If Gavin has used the ones he made for years now, then I can too. lol
Thank you!
You're killing it!
Excellent as always! Thank you
That came out nicely.
Excellent Gavin. Thanks.
Awesome video as always Gavin.
That's one way to stay warm!
😀
🙏
That was a bit of a bonus Alvin 😁
a Selfie to the next level...i think this will also work with two Strip Boxes (gridded). thank you for the idea Gavin.
#CreateNomaterWhat
So creative and fun, plus no fractures on the slopes! Enjoyed this and learned a lot about V-flats-thank you! Okay, off to the DIY store and I'll build 2 because, well, "One is never enough!" Cracked me up! 🤣x2
Brilliant !
Great Video Gavin, you are very entertaining and do a fine job on your own. Thanks Gavin and Sam and Polly, Stay Well.
Great, as always
Such a great video, and Thank you for the Snow action!!! It works like a Champion!
You're welcome 👍
Great end result. Just shows what playing around with light will do for you. Heck, if you had to you could make them. Buy the way, your daughter did a nice job on the hat!
Thanks Ted. Grey and red is every photographers dream colour combo, so of course the hat looked awesome!
Thank You for another great video!
By the way, You can group the layers created by action and apply a mask on entire group
Great explanation!
Gavin, you're awesome!
Top marks as always Gavin.✔ Top... Marks...👍
Genius video, Gavin! Oh, your daughter's hat looks great too!
Great video Gavin
Came here for the title, loved the accent, stayed for the content.Nice work here. Thanks.
Ok Gavin, that dude in the pictures looks badass. You would never tell it was you....
"would never tell it was you..." Thanks James, that's exactly what I hoped 😁
Awesome
You’re just too huggable! Luv your videos. Thanx for this one
Thanks Lillian. Sadly hugs are still illegal around here 😕
Appreciate the freebies. Thanks!
World famous, international ski-jumper Gavin Hoey !!! Great video and images
Another one of my hidden talents Alan. Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards was my inspiration here 🎿
Don’t forget International Male Model of the Year! Gavin, you are terrific, one of my few “must watches”.
Kool Video! Photos were on point!
awesome job, awesome guy
great modelling also. Your videos are brilliant!
Hello Gavin I'm from Brazil my name is Luis and I follow your videos. I have learned a lot from them and would like to thank them for their teachings and dedication.
Hi Luis. Thanks for the kind words... keep watching for more 👍
lockdown creativity
Gavin this is brilliant, could you do some more videos with more examples of using V flats please
🙌🏼
Great video Gavin!
Great job on the video Gavin! And your daughter did a great job on the hat. 🙂
I really look forward to your videos Gavin, I always learn from them. Great to see your latest model 'polystyrene Poly'. I have her brother Paul, he's got 2 jobs: 1. to wear my fly fishing hat, 2. to sit on my light stand and be photographed whenever I need him.
Thanks for the link to the ones we can buy from V-Flat World. At nearly $400, I can see why everyone (except millionaires) makes their own V-flats!
Awsome video !🔥
Great video. Your daughter did an awesome job on the hat!!!
Here is a tip, the gap between the two flats, you can actually make the flats closer together and shoot through a smaller gap. ie, id does not have to be the width of the lens.
Thanks for sharing, i love the vídeo, because i do selfportratis
Good stuff!
Genial
That was Great Gavin,,, I think maybe I would of liked you to maybe tried a filter on the back light,,, Don't know how it would of turned out but just as a different effect,,, I know easy to think after the event,,, but if that was your intention,,, you nailed it again very well done,,,
Another great video, now to make some V-Flats. Can you share your tethering set up please?
I love your work and the way you teach. How can I make vflats from something at the hardware store instead of purchasing some?
Amazing photos! Gavin, how did you measure the lights for these shots? Tks!
Muy interesante y muy constructivo el tutorial.
Me ha gustado muchísimo.
Una preguntita.
Cómo puedo conectarme a la vez para poder las fotos desde el obrador y una TV..
Gracias.
great hat
Well done. Would a square of foam core with a hole for the lens fill in the vertical stripe caused by the gap between the v flats?
good hat, better models and great advice, thank you very much.
Thanks Christine. The hat and goggles helped hide the questionable model 😉
Well the goggles may have helped a little bit. 🤭 You did great.👍
Polly’s cousin Dolly helps me out with lighting sometimes too...
Sharp ! What kind of moniteur do you used ?
TKS
Cool haha
Nice one Gavin!! Just curious here, what size is yr small home studio? Cheers mate!
thumbs up :-)
Snow layers: Perhaps if you put them into a group and added a white mask you could brush them away in one layer. Your thoughts? Love all your work. All the best Gavin.
You could do that Edwin but by building up the effect with a 50% opacity brush on each snow layer I kept a tiny bit of randomness to each layer.
It was funny seeing you as the model Gavin LOL But do you have a video on making your own V flats?
I don't have a video on that. Honestly the time would be better spent investing in some purpose made V-Flats (link the video description). There is light at the end of our lockdown tunnel so hopefully I won't have to be the model for much longer!
Hey Gavin, curious as to what type of screen you are tethering to. Is it a tablet of surface book?
High Gavin, can I use black velvet curtains on both sides of my white studio instead of using the v-flats?
Great video Gavin. I would love to see a short video of out takes. LOL Adorama should make a video of the adorama photographers goof ups. LOL At least your V-Flats are heavy duty.
There no such thing as a "short video" of outtakes 😳
@@GavinHoey LOL
Polly Styrene? How did you get her in? She's my favourite model in the whole world!
What monitor are you using for tethering?
2 views 5 👍 ? Only with G. H. 👍👍👍👍🤗🇨🇭
Doing great as a model Gavin
Thanks Kirsty. Turns out modelling is harder then it looks 😉
@@GavinHoey you did a great job of it
what laptop/Display are you tethering on?
Omg! I have recently hired Polly to practice on too!.
Great subject, but she's a bit quiet.
Great video, Mr. Hoey. Please, what tether software are you using.
Hi David. I'm using Olympus Capture to tether and Olympus Workspace to display in full screen.
@@GavinHoey Thanks.
I want to move next door to Gaven
Awesome! I too have DIY V-flats, but with Foam core and duct tape. How much did you spend to make your set up?
I made my DIY V-Flats over a decade ago. I can't recall how much they cost but I do know they took far to long to make. If off the shelf V-Flats had been a thing back then I'd have gone for them 😉
@@GavinHoey Heh. Maybe. But at over 300 a flat, I'll DIY.
Your email sir... The work you are doing is great
That camera was very close to the model. what lens did you use ?
It's captioned on the images. Olympus 12-40, which is a 24-80 equivalent.
