    WRC is the FIA World Rally Championship, a tough motorsport using rally cars on real roads around the world. Watch the best rally drivers flat out on gravel and asphalt roads with mud, rain, dust, ice and heat. Power slides, drifts, big jumps, watersplashes, handbrake turns, hairpin bends, lucky escapes, big moments or a massive crash. Rally requires maximum attack and careful tactics to become world rally champion.
    Rally drivers take turns to complete closed road "special stages" as quickly as possible, setting off a few minutes apart. A co-driver reads pace notes to describe the hazards ahead. The same rally car is used to travel to each stage on public roads following normal traffic regulations. The crew which completes all the stages in the shortest time is the rally winner. WRC is administered by the FIA Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile FIA, motorsport's world governing body.
    Some of the world's greatest drivers have won the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers : Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz, Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Petter Solberg, Ott Tänak. Champions from Finland are Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen, Ari Vatanen, Marcus Grönholm and Hannu Mikkola. French rally drivers have dominated 8 times with Sébastien Ogier, and 9 times with Sébastien Loeb. Famous motorsport drivers have attempted WRC like Robert Kubica and Kimi Räikkönen from F1 and Ken Block from Rallycross.
    Car companies compete for the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers. The 1980's featured the iconic Group B rally cars like the Lancia 037 and Delta S4, Peugeot 205 T16, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200 and Audi Quattro.
    Japan dominated the 1990s with the Mitsubishi Lancer, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Celica and Toyota Corolla. Citroen and Volkswagen became champions in the 2000s along with M-Sport team using the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta. Toyota returned to the WRC in 2017 with the Toyota Yaris WRC, winning in 2018 and 2021. Hyundai won in 2019 and 2020 with the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. I thank Richard for also leaving behind one of the greatest rally simulations ever conceived, still not bested. Still enjoyed 20 years later on it's own merits! What a man.

    Underrated as far as a champion. Not the fastest, but fast enough and kept the car in one piece til the end.

    He was the driver I grew up watching when I was 5 because he had the same last name as Mr. Burns from the Simpsons, very sad what happened to him.

    Had Richard not left Subaru, and still be there with Tommi and Petter that year in 2002, he can win the title again for sure!

      I am absolutely convinced in 2003 in the Peugeot he would have won the World Championship had he not fallen ill in the last rounds.

    To think this man was going back to subaru in '04 gives me a bigger feeling of "what if" than wales '03. He would have been in an even more advanced subaru than this model, at a British team (like Colin, he thrives in a British team that's just focused on racing without unnecessary lead driver politics seen in peugeot and Citroën) and I think he would have ran loeb close in '04 (or at least closer than what petter could do). Funny enough though, I can't imagine where he would've gone after subaru, considering how terrible they were from '06. Perhaps Ford, then hung up his helmet ? Between Colin and Richard, I will always pick richard because he may not have been as fast as Colin (besides, he definitely was NOT slow) or as flamboyant, but he's the type of driver I'd take because barring any reliability issues, you know he'll bring the team strong points if not a win. Also, if we just compare Richard and Colin's championship results when Richard competed full-time in the championship, Colin only outscored Richard in '98 and '02, so that says something about the brilliance of Richard (to those who want to bring up '99, let's not forget that even that car was a race winner and from '00, the focus was very close to the impreza in terms of performance and won more races in '01).

    • @chrisbiewer-rallye-info
      @chrisbiewer-rallye-info 2 місяці тому

      Very nicely written. But what I don't agree is that Prodrive/Subaru had no unnecessary team orders unlike Peugeot and Citroen. I remember only one questionable team order from Peugeot, but I do remember the Subaru team order in Catalunya 1995 where Colin was not allowed to beat Carlos, that was downright stupid. Also on his first Safari Richard was not allowed to beat team mate Patrick Njiru. Richard was clearly faster and could potentially have taken a podium, but he was ordered to stay behind much slower Njiru. Richard was a fantastically complete driver, always looking at the bigger picture. He didn't need to win rallies, his target was the title. And I am absolutely convinced in 2003 in the Peugeot he would have won the World Championship had he not fallen ill in the last rounds.

      @@chrisbiewer-rallye-info with hindsight, when looking at how his title challenge collapsed on the asphalt rounds, it's sad to see how that illness destroyed his career. Also, Richard was never gonna win the title without a victory but it's only fair to wonder which round would've given him his best chance at victory (maybe Corsica? Or Wales?)

    • @chrisbiewer-rallye-info
      @chrisbiewer-rallye-info 2 місяці тому

      @@UyandaMaboea-dv3qc Exactly. Not many people know his illness was there for a while. Last time I met Richard was in Finland 2003 and on the last day he complained of a really bad headache. And he lost a place to Petter Solberg there. San Remo and Catalunya he was way below his normal self and in Corsica on the last day he stopped mid stage because he had to throw up. I believe already from Finland he suffered from this illness. And up to Finland he was leading the title race. In fact he was still leading it after his surprisingly poor 7th place in San Remo.
