  • Cam heads way out to Hemlock Valley for a double service: one Kubota mini excavator and a big Samsung excavator.
    The Kubota mini excavator gets a filter change and a recommendation for a final drive service. Plus Cam shows us this really cool air tool called the Radiator Genie - if you thought it was awesome too you can check them out here 👇

    Next up is the Samsung excavator for a full service. What was going to be a straightforward service turns into an epic saga. The swing oil takes forever to drain, a stubborn filter housing means the whole line system has to come off, the weather starts getting real nasty….
    Did we mention the heavy duty mechanic was repairing all this in the rain… Also the sideways rain, also some slushy snow, followed by heavy snow, and occasionally some sunshine?
    All in a day in the life of a heavy equipment mechanic.

      @Big Mike I genually say do what you feel you want to do. Im going for HD Diesel and Heavy equipment repair. I was a mechanic for light vehicles before and was a service writer as well. Every aspect sucked. Heavy is a more demanding but more upfront service, primarily commercial customers are "Usually" easier to deal with i think.

    Just an FYI. Worked on Kubota units quite a bit. For the engine oil level they like to be half way up the dip stick. If you over fill it on the old ones it will just burn down to half way on the dipstick. If you over fill the newer units. They will try and burn it off and sour the DPF, then it has to be replaced. Like the vids guys👍

    Interesting point of view about air filters. I work in west Texas and pulling filters to clean is commonplace because of the sand and dust. Our restriction numbers are gospel because of how easy it is to dust an engine down there. That being said we’ve always been pretty liberal about pulling filters to clean or even inspect between pms we are just very careful.

    2 Questions for Cam or any of the other techs on tekamo. What is the most expensive bill you had to eat because of a mistake you may have made repairing it?
    For example splitting a unit to do a clutch and maybe it wasn't set right and you had to split the unit again and fix your mistake, would you eat the labor for 2nd time splitting the unit or would you still charge the customer?
    I'm curious because you are independent.
    Whats the coldest weather your work in?
    I live in the Canadian prairies where a couple months in winter can result in 30 or more days of -30 Celsius. How would you work in that? I would be very cautious and afraid of breaking components.

Anybody on here for advice would be great lol. I am looking at a job in Alberta currently. A little fact on air filters. The more dirt they accumulate in them they actually filter more efficiently using a dirt wall. So brand new ones technically don't filter as many contaminants as well until they have sucked in a bit of dust first. Cam knows his shit :D

    For sure everyone will have their own opinion and service style. Once I pulled an inner air filter and actually found a couple small pieces of the compressor blades just in behind the filter before there was any symptoms of a turbo failure. Not that that is something you usually are looking for but it is for me now lol. Personally I change the outter every 250 and the inner every 500 as , in my opinion, you can have a fair amount of "restriction" in an inner and not see it visually as it is a finer filter pleting. It is more exspensive for sure but that's just how I do our fleet. Great content, enjoy seeing other styles and techniques. Oh yeah, I work on road building equipment over on the Island!

  • @ozzmann3217
    @ozzmann3217 Рік тому

    We just have to replace the air filters every 250 our spec doesn’t call for that but because the amount of dust in our particular equipment we usually always change them at every 250 not that I agree we should always but it’s part of the routine but again this is a very specific high dust application so that’s probably the difference certainly wouldn’t be necessary in most applications

    It took me a lot of years handling hot, full oil filters, only to find out the common sense approach. Now, I punch a hole in the bottom and let it drain. It not only prevents oil coming down the sides to get all over your hands, but it's lighter and it cools off without oil in it.
    Punch your hole damn it!
