There's a lot of things you can do. Like cubing your Weapon/Secondary/Emblem to 2L att. Starforcing your equipment to 22* slowly. But if you want free gains, getting your origin skill from 6th job (level 260) will give you a massive power spike.
for bossing? Dark sight, Spirit Blade, Cross Surge, Final Cut, Bullseye shot (1st job to Hyper skills). You basically want to use Phantom's own kit, mille and tempest for bossing and the stolen skills are just damage boosts (except dark sight). For hyper skill, you can also tech in Sacrosanctity if youre struggling with survival. But once you get used to the bosses, you wont need it. For mobbing, you can go for Cardinal deluge, cardinal burst, holy symbol and frozen orb. you can swap out holy symbol for cross surge if youre struggling for damage, since you have decent holy symbol for 5th job
Short answer, no. Long answer, mostly yes, most of my gains are completely from merching alone. I only had to spend here and there because I ran out of mesos to work with (spent all my mesos and didnt leave any for merching) and there was a really shiny cane that one time.
