England have a huge player pool, much larger than most of the other teams in the six nations. They were not firing in the first 3 matches but we all knew that they had good players and could match anyone if only the coach could get the selection and tactics right. He did get things right for the last 2 games and now we have a team that will go into next year's tournament as one of the favorites. Ireland were not quite the team they were last year, hardly surprising when they were effectively without Keenan, Hanson and Ringrose for the tournament, three of their stars from last year. Add to this the fact that they needed to blood some youngsters and cope with the loss of Johhny Sexton. They will be happy to be champions and I have no doubt they will be massively stronger next year.

If you have the pool of players then why has England faired so badly in the 6 nations surely they should have a much better record than teams like Wales Ireland France etc.

@@NickWarne-bx3kveducate yourself. England have over 3.5 times the registered rugby players to that of Ireland. In fact only France have more registered players than England.

Countries like Ireland with smaller playing numbers than England have the advantage of having their players generally concentrated into one or two provincial teams, meaning cohesion is developed year round. In addition, the Irish Rugby Union (much to their credit) use central contracts giving them control over the players. Contrast that to England, and even France, where the larger player pool allows for more professional clubs and the elite players making up the national team end up being far more spread out and controlled by the clubs. National teams assemble for about 2 weeks before the six nations, giving nations like England less time to develop cohesion. Contrast this to World Cup where players are with the national set up for months before, meaning nations like England can develop those partnerships and a more cohesive team. Conclusion - despite having bigger players pools than the other home nations - England’s overall record in the five and six nations has arguably been underwhelming (they actually do hold the record for outright wins and Grand Slams) giving some of the other unions a David and Goliath perspective. However, contrast England’s record at World Cup’s compared to the other home nations and that’s where you see the greater resources of the union shining through. Final note, Rugby remains somewhat of a niche sport in England, despite being practised in state schools, the elite level remains accessible to only a particular social group, generally in fee paying private schools, a problem Eddie Jone highlighted before being axed.

@@jonnygeorge7325 I think you’re saying in your long winded post that you’re responsible for your own inadequacies. Don’t blame countries like Ireland NZ and others for doing the best for their players and country. It’s pretty clear that in England now they are having tremendous difficulty managing their own leagues with many clubs facing bleak futures . But take responsibility and don’t harp on about countries who are both smart and successful , nobody or nothing stopping from doing your thing. Measure gran slams and championships from the professional era and teams from those players still playing today, last week 5 Irish players still playing picked up their 5 th six nations medals.

I thought France were terrible and were flattered by their results - they actually should have lost to Italy, Scotland and arguably England. However they were missing their 9&10 and their best 12 for 2.5 games. I think they will be more formidable next year. Italy is the most improved team and England has the most promise - if they keep scoring 3-4 tries against top opposition and refine their reckless Blitz defence they could be fearsome. They also have top players waiting to come back in - the only area of concern is prop, especially at tighthead. I think teams may be working out Ireland’s attack and Ireland won’t be able to change the way they play. Scotland have maxed out and Wales are floundering, but will improve when more players become available. It’s a shame the 6 Nations is over - international rugby is so much more compelling than club Rugby, unlike football.

Props and the scrum been an issue for 4 years . Though we got through this six nations pretty muck okay, Mainly down to Cole and marler of course. But there are a number of potential props who hopefully will get a chance , under 21s looking promising and Genge looks like he’s improved in that scrum , as has Will stuart . Big shout out to Tom Harrison who looks like he’s developing into a top scrum coach.

I agree with most of that, where I disagree however:
      - Scotland haven't "maxed out" just yet, if they can become more resilient under pressure/expectation, there's another level there imo.
      - Ireland have the players to adapt if they have to, they just haven't needed to so far because they're so dominant (against Northern hemisphere teams).

@@iankavanagh9174Fairly sure Ireland will adapt with Mike Catt leaving for a new attack coach to come in. Ireland will evolve. Ireland should now fear France and England's power game though where they simply just out match Ireland. Next year will be very fun.

I think England are on the right track. Whilst this team has tonnes of caps, I think we’re going to transition a lot of personnel before the World Cup. Whilst the all performed in this 6 nations market, Cole, Daly, ford, spade probs won’t make the next World Cup. The current next generation have some talent but they’re probs just abit too young at the moment. Think we’ll be a top teams in 2-3 years as these new player filter in.

Going through all the pundits team of the six nations, Irish players pretty much never add to more than four, with Porter and Sheehan being the guaranteed two. This is a fair reflection as their team performance stands out way more than any individual performances and these notional teams are picked on individual performances and a need to share the awards a little. These stats reflect the teamwork. Hoping Ireland can do three in row, but knowing France and England will continue to improve. The only upside being that they both must play us at home next year.
